I had an ETX125. Excellent small portable scope. No, the images you'll see are real, not computer generated. The computer helps you find stuff, you just have to set the telescope up each time you use it, not a big deal, but it takes maybe 10 minutes.
I would NOT suggest building your own, you'll save no money at all IMHO; building your own is a wonderful learning experience, but if you are interested now, strike while the iron is hot and get a good small scope. I'd look at the Meade Lightbridge series of dobs, an 8" can be had for a little more $$
