Description

With Orion's StarShoot USB Eyepiece, you can easily view what you see in your telescope on your laptop or desktop PC! The USB eyepiece transmits live images of the Moon, bright planets, Sun (solar filter required), and terrestrial subjects as seen through the telescope to your laptop or desktop PC. Now the whole family, classroom, or astronomical society can enjoy the view right along with you, as if you were all looking through the same telescope. The StarShoot USB eyepiece fits in any telescope with a 1.25-inch focuser, or a 2"-to- 1.25" step-down adapter. While a telescope attached to a mount equipped with a tracking motor will provide the best results for nighttime use, even non-motorized telescopes like Dobsonian reflectors work well with this petite performer. During daylight hours, the USB eyepiece can add crowd-pleasing performance to any telescope outfitted for terrestrial use. Telescopic views of birds, wildlife, and scenery can be seen and enjoyed on your laptop or desktop PC screen. This nifty eyepiece imager provides an inexpensive entry into the rewarding realm of astro-imaging.

Features

  • USB Eyepiece with a 1/7-inch Color CMOS sensor transmits live color video to your PC
  • Small 5.6mm x 5.6mm pixel size accurately detects details
  • Captures 24 frames per second (fps) at full 320 x 240 resolution
  • 1.25-inch filter threads for 1.25-inch Orion filters and focal reducers

Telescope eyepiece questions?

I have an xt10 with 1200mm focal length and I have a 6mm, a 25mm and a barlow 2x. So I can go 40 80 200 or 400x right now, and all the eyepieces are plossel and fairly inexpensive. Would buying 2" eyepieces change my fov or does anybody recommend a different type of eyepiece for planetary viewing. DSOs are nice and clear and Jupiter and Saturn are both fairly impressive, however I have seen much better in pics the planets so I don't know if thats the result of stacking image or a better eyepieces. Also the digital eyepiece that you put in and plug the cord directly into the usb, are these worthwhile for instantaneous snapshots or just for a better view or anything?

2" eyepeices are only of use at very low powers, where the field of view gets so wide that it can't physically fit inside a 1.25" barrel, at which point we say it has become barrel limited. Even your 25mm eyepeice is unlikely to be barrel limited though - you'd probably need to go up to 32 or 36mm for that - so at the power levels of your existing eyepeices the increased barrel size is no real benefit. 2" eyepeices are usually only for longer focal length. When they are sold, short focal length 2" eyepeices are effectively 1.25" eyepeices in a 2" housing - the 2" size there simply allows you to quickly change between eyepeices without adding or taking off the adapter. There are no benefits optically.

As for digital eyepeices, I presume you are talking about the cheap webcam imagers such as Meade's LPI or the Celestron NexImage. They're useful enough devices and allow you to see a little fainter with exposure of a few seconds. I also quite like them if you want a quick record of what you have seen - I've never been one for sketching. The biggest benfit of them though is probably on the planets: they retain colour sensitivity at far lower light levels than your eyes do, which allows you to pick out surface details using them that your eyes can't.

Celestron NexImage Solar System Imager Celestron NexImage Solar System Imager

Description

Amazon.com Review Celestron's NexImage combines a sensitive CCD imaging device with powerful image processing software in one affordable package. Now anyone with a telescope can take pictures that are simply amazing. An image of Jupiter taken with the Celestron NexImage Solar System Imager Amateur astronomers have been taking great pictures of the moon and planets by using modified Webcams. The favored Webcams for astro-imaging have been the hard-to-find Philips ToUCam and Vesta models because of their high-performance CCD chips. Now Celestron's Neximage puts the same CCD technology in a package that's ready to use with any telescope that accepts 1.25-inch eyepieces. The NexImage includes an anodized metal nosepiece that fits in a 1.25-inch eyepiece holder. When I installed the Windows based software, I also updated my Windows Media Player files. Then I simply plugged the NexImage into my computers' USB port, and I was ready to start taking pictures. The NexImage CCD is sensitive enough that I can take "snapshots" of the Moon or Sunspots (always use a safe Solar filter, of course!) even without a motor-driven telescope. The real power of the NexImage package, however, comes from its included Registax software which automatically aligns and stacks hundreds of individual AVI video frames into one sharp, highly detailed picture. I used my 8-inch Celestron Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope (similar to the Nexstar 8 GPS ) and my 2x Ultima Barlow lens to capture some beautiful pictures of Jupiter and Saturn. The sensitive Sony CCD chip in the NexImage easily shows color and detail on Jupiter that just doesn't show up when I use CMOS-based Webcams. The fine performance of the NexImage package is limited somewhat by its included video capture software. The AmCap software doesn't give me the precise control of exposure times I'd like; I wasn't able to photograph the moon Callisto next to Jupiter, for instance, without overexposing the planet. Celestron doesn't mention the other little drawback in its ads. You'll have so much fun that your hard drive will start filling up with pictures and AVIs! --Jeff Phillips Pros: Sensitive CCD chip Fits any telescope that takes 1.25-inch eyepieces Powerful image processing software Cons: Takes practice to get the exposure time just right Software is Windows only You'll fill up your hard drive with pictures

The Celestron NexImage Solar System Imager is a complete CCD solar system imager capable of producing high quality planetary images with greater light sensitivity and color fidelity than comparable CMOS imagers. -- The NexImage, along with the NexImage software package, can bring out tremendous detail and reveal a final image that will rival those taken with astronomical CCD cameras costing thousands of dollars more. -- **View and capture live video on your computer screen -- **Software automatically filters out video frames most affected by poor atmospheric "seeing" leaving only the sharpest, clearest frames to be stacked and aligned into one high quality image -- **Easy to follow quick start instructions and tutorial with sample video file that will have you producing quality images your first night out -- ** -- Camera control software allows you to manually change the gain, contrast, exposure time, frame rate and color saturation using your PC -- With the 1.25" adapter barrel, the NexImage is compatible with most any telescope. In addition, the 1.25" adapter is threaded for standard eyepiece filters and can be removed and replaced with optional focal reducer lens, adding greater versatility. --

Features

  • Complete CCD solar system imager produces high-quality planetary images
  • View and capture live video on your computer screen
  • Software automatically filters out fuzzy frames for sharper image
  • Easy to install and use
  • Manually control gain, contrast, exposure time, and much more from your PC
