The Barska Blackhawk 60mm spotting scope is a terrific value because it offers very good optical performance in a compact and affordable package. The scope itself features waterproof design, multicoated optics, and a zoom eyepiece with magnification ranging from 20X up to 60X. The accessories include a light weight table-top tripod, a soft caring case, and a durable hard shell case that will allow the rubber armored scope to stand up to a lifetime of use. The Blackhawk 60mm spotting scope uses a multi-coated objective lens and rugged porro-prism design for bright, clear images. At 100 yards, I can clearly focus in on a target, even when I crank the magnification up to the maximum 60X. When I use the scope for wildlife spotting, the sweet spot seems to be about 30X magnification; 30X gives me an ideal combination of sharp images and a wide field of view, perfect for identifying Puffins and Pelicans along the coast. I also like the compact size and light weight of the Blackhawk 60. At only 14 inches long and weighing less than two pounds, the Blackhawk 60 is light enough to use a photo tripod such as the SLIK U-9000 in the field. Like other entry level spotting scopes, the Barska Blackhawk 60 uses an Achromatic objective lens, which means that some false color or blue fringing is noticeable at high power. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the quality and value of the binoculars and spotting scopes imported by Barska the last few years. The Barska Blackhawk 60mm spotting scope simply offers very good optical performance for a very reasonable price. --Jeff Phillips Pros: Excellent price/performance ratio Very good Achromatic optics Waterproof design with rubber coating Premium hard shell case included Cons: Blue fringing noticeable at high power Limited eye relief for eyeglass wearers

Carl Zeiss And His Binoculars

The ones that introduce a new idea into technology should be the ones that others ask for information on those items. This is true in many of the cases.

The Carl Zeiss brands of binoculars were not created because there was a need for them. The company has been in business for over a hundred years. They have much experience in the manufacturing of optical products. It was created in the year of 1852 as a workshop for Moritz Carl Hensoldt the founder of the company. He was in the business of creating equipment used in astronomy, microscopes, and telescopes for viewing planets and other terrestrial objects. In the year of 1893 an application for the double telescope with a longer range of sight was applied for. It was given to them July 9, 1893.

The Carl Zeiss binoculars that have the roof prisms in them came about in the year of 1897. These particular binoculars are well known as the Penta 7x29 model A-. This product was the beginning of the better features in the world of binoculars and scopes for rifles. For more info see http://www.binoculars-rating.com/Compact_Binoculars/ on Compact Binoculars

Carl Zeiss created another wonderful set of binoculars in the year of 1903. The Dialyt was created for the binocular marketplace. It was recognized around the world and gathered much fame and success. This was the beginning of the trademark that would forever be known as the Dialyst. This trademark would take the Carl Zeiss binocular products and scopes for rifles trademark of Diavari around the world. The Diavari trademark came into existence in 1954.

Two years later the binoculars that are made by Carl Zeiss used the cuff gasket for their designed because it was an item that had many features to it. The binocular products that were made with this item were able to focus on something while being safely covered from any debris and wetness. This was a major feat for a double sight binocular because up until then, it was only in a single sight binocular.

The binoculars that Carl Weiss came out with in 1958 were known as the B-model. these binoculars give you a wide range of sight and are great for the users that have eyeglasses. Pocket size binoculars were made in 1974 and given to the public as a grand feature. These binoculars also gave you a main point of focus and were also available for glasses wearers.

Form the year of 1974 until today, the binoculars made by Carl Zeiss keep on giving advances to the technology of the optical equipment we use. They have become the world's oldest makers of binoculars that are still up and running today. They have gotten this recognition because of their many years of experience and knowledge in the field. This form of lens crafting has been a generational craft that Carl Zeiss created.

Much of the things that Carl Zeiss stands for came from many trial and error times. This is not uncommon for the technology world to try and fail only to find a better product among the dust. Carl Zeiss has worked hard to give the customers the best of the best features possible in the market today.

Do I simply need a larger objective lens?

Good evening. I just recently purchased an Orion 90mm refractor. I am at 34 degrees N. Thus far, I have been a little disappointed in the investment because the objects I have sighted (Jupiter, M31, Saturn) are, well, tiny. In fact, M31 seemed to me to be no larger than a star with another star (M110) close by. My scope's focal length is 910mm and I have two eyepieces---10mm and 25mm. So obviously my magnifications are roughly 36x and 91x. Am I simply expecting too much and should realize that I don't own the Hubble Space Telescope? Or would I be better served by investing in a scope with a larger objective lens? Any advice here would be appreciated.

Doug. A couple of points. We are spoilt nowadays by fantastic images of celestial objects and because of this novices often have expectations which are WAY too high. As a beginner I spent lots of money on a qualtity 200mm reflector and I was very underwhelmed and more than a little dissapointed by what I could (and couldn't...) see. 2 years later I love the same scope and I'm thrilled by what I can see, because I've adjusted my expectations to a more realistic level. I also have a VERY cheap 70mm refractor which is considerably less capable than your scope and I'm also quite impressed with that (for a small cheap scope) Re M31, it's actually a huge object in terms of its angular size and what you are seeing is just the bright core. The whole galaxy is around 190 arc minutes wide, (over 5 times the width of the full Moon) so it's not a great target for visual observers. Galaxies in general are not great in a small scope unless you are under very dark skies as the outer parts of most galaxies are very faint. M51 will fit easily in your scopes field of view but you'll probably still only see the 2 bright cores. Re magnification You should be able to squeeze around x150 magnification (or a touch more) from your scope under good skies so a shorter focal length eyepiece may be a good investment but nights when you can push things that far will be few. Around x110 - x120 may be more suitable. However, I almost guarantee you'll return to the wider field, lower magnifications you're using now as these normally offer a sharper, more pleasing view especially if you like the deep sky. That's a difficult one to get your head around at first, but I assure you it's true. Of course, a bigger aperture scope will improve your view dramatically and most of the Chinese reflectors available now at very reasonable prices from Orion/Celestron/Skywatcher etc appear to have very good optics for the money so if you can stretch to something bigger it will enhance your hobby considerably. If you like both planetary and deep sky stuff then a reflector of around F6 focal ratio (in whatever aperture you can afford) would be a good purchase but your 90mm scope should still have its place in your arsenal

Remanufactured Meade DS-114ATE Refractor Telescope Remanufactured Meade DS-114ATE Refractor Telescope

List Price: $399.00

Description

A step up from entry-level 60mm refractor telescopes, the remanufactured Meade DS-114ATE features a 114mm primary mirror that produces images three-and-a-half times brighter than objects seen through comparable 60mm lenses, making planets, stars, and other celestial bodies look remarkably sharp and clear. The scope is still a great fit for budding backyard astronomers and hobbyists, but the upgraded lens gives the DS-114ATE added value, as does the Autostar computer controller, which automatically adjusts the optical tube to track more than 1,400 celestial objects. The dual motor control and pinpoint tracking helps you easily view the major planets, star clusters, galaxies, and nebulae that otherwise might be difficult to locate, instead centering them directly in the lens's field of view. As a final bonus, the DS-114ATE also makes a nice choice for such terrestrial tasks as bird watching, nature gazing, or neighborhood surveying. Meade's topnotch optical design also boasts a 5x24mm viewfinder, a rack-and-pinion focuser, two eyepiece holders (1.25 and 2 inches), and two eyepieces (MA25mm and MH9mm), which enable magnifications of 36x and 101x respectively. The focal length of 900 mm (with an f/8 ratio), meanwhile, isn't as powerful as many high-end telescopes, but still keeps objects looking razor sharp. The instruments are housed in a durable aluminum tube assembly and mounted on a fully adjustable aluminum tripod (with an accessory tray) that ensures a stable viewing platform with minimal vibration--the bane of telescopes everywhere. As a bonus, the telescope also comes with an electronic eyepiece that connects to your TV or VCR via an RCA-type video plug. Thanks to the eyepiece, users can view the moon, planets, and other bodies directly on their TV screen, or record them to the VCR for later viewing. It's particularly cool for rare events, such as meteor showers, eclipses, or comet sightings. The telescope also comes with a copy of Meade's astronomy software, which boasts a database of more than 10,000 celestial objects. The application offers an ideal way to virtually explore the heavens before looking through the telescope's eyepiece and finding the real planets, galaxies, nebulae, and star clusters. The software also includes detailed star charts for printing, along with easy-to-use Microsoft Windows pulldown menus and online help. The DS-114ATE telescope is backed by a 90-day warranty. What's in the Box Telescope with viewfinder, software CD-ROM, user's manual.

Features

  • Refractor telescope with 114mm objective lens and computer controller to help locate celestial objects
  • Pair of eyepieces (MH9mm and MA25mm) and eyepiece holders (1.25 and 2 inches) ensure a wide field of view in varying conditions
  • Focal length of 900mm (f/8 focal ratio); bonus electronic eyepiece lets you view objects through TV or record footage on VCR
  • Computer controller automatically adjusts optical tube to track more than 1,400 objects; fully adjustable aluminum tripod
  • Remanufactured to like-new condition; 90-day warranty
