Starfire telescope Photo Mugs |
DescriptionStarfire laser beam. Astronomer with the1.5-metre telescope at the Starfire Optical Range(SOR) as it projects a copper vapour laser beam(green). This laser creates an artificial starin the upper atmosphere, within the field of viewof the SORs main 3.5-metre telescope. The latterdetects any change in shape of the artificialstar due to air turbulence, and uses a flexibleadaptive optics mirror to compensate. Thiseffectively counters the familiar Features

Is there a law that applies to the refractive light on flat surfaces?
I'm sure there are laws governing how waves refract, specifically targeted visible light. But is there any law that sets the angle or an equation that can be used to find the angle at which the light is refracted, reflected back into space. For example, if I'm shining a laser pointer to a telescope mirror at an angle of 47 degrees, how I can determine the angle at which light bounces back into the room, there is a law for it.
A refracting telescope mirror has no appreciable reflection only. The governing law is that the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection. for a curve of the mirror normal line that defines the angle of incidence and reflection is perpendicular to the tangent at the point where light hits. For a telescope, if the light comes in parallel with the telescope tube, which constitute the focal point as the mirror is (Usually but not always) a parabola. We hope this answers your question. ADDED See link for a diagram that is much easier to understand than a simple description.
