Meade 20218 NG-70SM 70mm Altazimuth Refractor Telescope
List Price: |
DescriptionMeade 20218 NG-70SM 70mm Altazimuth Refractor Telescope Meade's value priced NG-70SM Altazimuth Refractor is an affordable entry level telescope that features an easy to use Altazimuth mount with slow motion controls for precise tracking. The complete package includes a sturdy metal tripod, a red dot viewfinder, two 1.25 inch eyepieces and a star diagonal, and a software DVD with instructional video. The NG-70SM Refractor Telescope comes disassembled in a compact box, but the instructional DVD video guides you through all the steps required for assembly. Go ahead and try it out in the daytime, that's the best time to align the red-dot finder scope while looking at a distant tree or telephone pole. The optics of Meade's NG-70SM produce an image that is right side up but the diagonal mirror reverses the image left-to-right. That's no problem most of the time, but an optional correct image diagonal is available. The low power 25mm eyepiece produces a magnification 28X which is just right for spotting the Moon or the planets, while the 9mm eyepiece (78X magnification) can be used to zoom in for more detail. The MH25 eyepiece at 28X shows a lovely view of the Lunar disk in a dark sky, while the MH9 eyepiece at 78X shows literally hundreds of craters on the Moon and begins to show the rings of Saturn and the cloud bands of Jupiter. For even better views it's easy to add better eyepieces. My best view of Saturn, for example, came with an optional 6.4mm Super Plossl eyepiece, about 110X magnification. The Altazimuth mount included with Meade's NG-70SM is lighter and easier to use than an Equatorial mount, yet the slow motion knobs make it easy to keep objects in view. The rotation of the Earth causes the Moon or planets to appear to drift out of the eyepiece, but the slow motion knobs make it easy to keep the telescope on target, even with a high power eyepiece. The telescope is sensitive to vibration, however, so a high power eyepiece can be difficult to focus. Meade's NG-70SM is a good entry level telescope at a very good price. The optics are good, the Altazimuth mount is easy to assemble and easy to use, the instructional DVD includes a nice Lunar Atlas as well as planetarium software, and it's easy to add better eyepieces to improve your view of the planets. –Jeff Phillips Pros: Light and easy to use Altazimuth mount includes slow motion knobs Easy to add better eyepieces Instructional DVD included; Cons: MH eyepieces have narrow field of view Vibrates while focusing at high power MEADE 20218 NG-70SM 70mm Altazimuth Refractor Telescope Features

Why can't I see anything through my telescope?
I have a Bushnell North Star "Go To" telescope. I got it yesterday. I assembled it and then took it outside to search the night's sky. Although, I couldn't see anything! Every time I align the red dot with the celestial object, for example, the moon, I look through the eyepiece(20mm) and see total darkness. It says something about looking through the main telescope tube in the instruction manual, although I don't see why I would....I see nothing in it as well. The instruction booklet is very poorly written. I don't see what I'm doing wrong here. I took the 20mm eyepiece out of it's 2 plastic tubes and removed the protective thing off the main telescope tube. Am I missing something here?????
Oh, and earlier today (during day) I looked through my eyepiece when I had the red dot finder scope thing pointed at a tree, and I was able to see the tree clarified and zoomed in on my eyepiece like it's supposed to be. However when I looked through it tonight, I got zip, nothing, nada.
Sounds as though the sighter scope is not correctly aligned with the main telescope.
The reason the instructions ask you to look through the main tube, is to confirm that the image you see in the sighter scope, is the same image in the main telescope.
Generally, the sighter scope has 3 small screws that you have to carefully adjust, so that it aligns with an objecgt correctly.
You have to repeat the adjusting exercise a few times (sighter, then telescope, then sighter, then telescope etc) a few times to get the alignment correct.
Secondly, lining up celestial objects is harder to do than lining up terrestrial ones such as a tree; this is because the margin for alignment error is greater in the former case, and will continue to be the case until you line up the sighter with the telescope correctly.
Repeat the exercise with the tree, tonight, and sweep toward a really bright object such as the moon or Venus (not sure of your location, so maybe the moon is your best shot)
Be patient, and enjoy

Celestron 21041 60mm PowerSeeker Telescope
List Price: |
DescriptionCelestron's value priced Powerseeker 60 telescope takes a basic "just the facts" approach to affordable entry level telescopes. The package includes an adjustable aluminum tripod with an alt-azimuth mount and stabilizer, a Kellner type K20 eyepiece, a Ramsden type SR4 eyepiece, a 3x barlow lens, and a 5 power cross-hair finder scope. The Powerseeker 60 comes disassembled in a compact box, but it won't take long to put everything together. Go ahead and try it out in the daytime, that's the best time to align the finder scope while looking at a distant tree or telephone pole. My first view of Saturn's rings and star cluster M13 in Hercules came with a 60mm telescope, and I enjoy celestial viewing with the Powerseeker 60 to this day. The secret is to use the low power K20 eyepiece and only extend the tripod legs half-way. This gives me sharp and steady views, whether I'm looking at nearby hills, craters on the Moon, the Double Cluster in Perseus, or even the Andromeda Galaxy! With a 1.25" focuser and diagonal mirror, it's easy to add better eyepieces. The Kellner type K20 eyepiece yields a 1.1 degree true field of view, better than the Huygens or H-type eyepieces still found in many beginner scopes. Adding an optional Celestron 25mm E-Lux eyepiece is better still. With nearly 2 degrees true field of view, the 25mm E-lux makes it much easier to find objects, either on land or in deep space. The SR4 eyepiece is less impressive; it's like peeking through a pin-hole. Adding the 3x barlow to the SR4 to get that 525x proclaimed on the box is peeking through a dim, fuzzy pin-hole. I'm surprised that a telescope this inexpensive can be this good. It's good enough to show me Saturn's rings at night or a Steller's Jay at 100 yards during the day. In my opinion, the Powerseeker 60 would be an even better bargain if it came with a K10 eyepiece in place of the 3x barlow and the SR4 eyepiece. Also take a look at Celestron's Firstscope 60AZ; it's only a little more expensive, but it includes two useable eyepieces, a red-dot finder, and planetarium software for your computer. Jeff Phillips Pros: Low cost Decent optics Accepts 1.25" eyepieces Cons: Too small for serious astronomy Only one good eyepiece Offering exceptional value, these telescopes feature portable yet powerful designs with ample optical performance to excite any newcomer to the world of amateur astronomy.
