Barlow Lens or new eyepiece?
I brought a Celestron Astromaster 130EQ (focal length 650mm) a few months ago. I decided on this due to the very good ratings about it being a very good value for money begginners telescope. So far I am impressed with it.
The telescope came with two eyepieces (20mm and 10mm). I have recently been observing Venus and Saturn and would like to get a closer look.
I am wondering whether it is best to buy a Barlow Lens to increase the magnification(and if so which barlow lens do you recommend), or whether to buy new eyepiece such as the Celestron X-Cel series which apparently are good for planetary viewing(about £60).
Any help would be much appreciated.
I'd go with another eyepiece.
In the old days, barlows made more sense because they allowed you to get higher power without losing eye relief. But they add more air to glass surfaces to scatter light (and reduce contrast) and more surfaces to collect dust.
The TMB Planetary line of eyepieces offers a variety of focal lengths between 2.5 and 9mm with about 16mm of eye relief. They're reasonably priced, have a wider than normal field of view, and they perform well. I use them as my "every day" and public outreach eyepieces.
Normally, when you're starting out, it makes sense to space your magnification by a factor of 2. So if you have a 20 and a 10, it might make sense to go for something around a 5mm as your next choice.
That would give you 130 power. At that magnification you'll be able to see reasonable details on Saturn and Jupiter, and magnification won't be high enough that seeing conditions will become a major problem.
If your area usually has good seeing conditions you might go for a 4mm instead.
You might try to find a local astronomical society, and join it. The members there will be able to give you great advice, and odds are incredible they'd be happy to let you try some of their eyepieces so you can get a handle on what focal length you'd get the most use out of.
