Telescope tips ...?
Wanted to get my first "real" in the coming weeks telescope. I say first because I have a refractor Discovery Channel telescope for Christmas when I was 10 and really can only see the moon. I have been looking at two reflector telescopes, in particular. Looking at the Orion and Orion SkyQuest XT6, the Starblast 6. Both have six openings and both cost exactly the same. The only thing is, is said to be f / 4 and the other says f / 8. Can someone explain what this means? Moreover, what each of these telescopes is more appropriate to look?
I'm going to make things easy: get the XT6. The table on one side without a Dobs "are, without exception, not worth bothering with. The difference in focal ratio (f / 4 vs f8) describes the difference in the proportion the opening and the length of the tube. A shorter (lower) makes the shorter focal ratio of the tube but worse for many optical aberrations. A f / 8 coma (a distortion in particular) is almost a theme, but not f / 4 is very serious. It also means you have to be much more demanding of collimation (difficult for a beginner) and also need shorter focal length eyepiece (usually with poor eye relief) for the same increase. If they have the same price and portability is not the first consideration the decision is a no brainer.

Blurriness Vivitar Telescope?
I have the Vivitar telescope and last night i was using it and i could see the moon perfectly but the picture was blurry i could kinda see each crater in the moon but it was very blurry, i tried wiping each lens of the telescope but it was still blurry. Is there any solution or cloth material i could clean it with so its not blurry?
Vivitar telescopes are very poor quality and nearly all plastic. All the cleaning in the world will not solve the problem of poor quality and bad design flaws. You have probably reached the limits of your scope.
There are several different kinds of telescopes and all of them have some excellent features. Refractors and Reflectors, plus Schmidt-Cassegrain, APO refractors and more. There are also several mounts to chose from and the mounts are just as important as the scope is. All of the different scopes and mounts have some features that some people like and do not like.
There is no one scope that is "better" than another except for the junk scopes out there, Vivitar being one of the many brands of junk, and all junkers are just a waste of money. Never, ever buy from Walmart, Costco, Target, or any other discount store like that. Junk scopes are flooded into the market from those stores. You will be buying nothing but bad optics and plastic.

Orion is the very best for value and for customer service too. I have 2 of their scopes and I will only buy from them from now on.
The Orion site has some excellent diagrams and explanations of all types of scopes and mounts.
Things to consider are size--can the user lift and transport the scope to the viewing site easily? If not, then it will gather dust in a closet. Can the viewer reach all the knobs and buttons? I have a long tube large manual refractor and it is very dificult for me to reach the knobs when I am pointed to Zenith. I am not a tall person.
Take your time in making your decision.
I would like to suggest that you join a local astronomy club or astronomical society BEFORE you spend your money on a scope. There are many different kinds of scopes and what is perfect for one person is not perfect for another. Everyone has their own set of eyeballs and no two are the same. If you join a club, you can attend a few of their star parties and try out members scopes to see what works best for YOU, before you buy a scope. The members can also help you when you get your scope and show you how to get the most out of your new scope as well as to help teach you where the treasures in the sky are located. Hint: they will be especially helpful if you take cookies to star parties. Most clubs have loaner scopes and extensive libraries that you can gather more information from too.
Some people will suggest that you purchase binnoculars. Not a bad idea but dont buy anything less than 10x50 and you must have a tripod too or you will not be happy with your astronomical views because they will be too shakey from your movements. Personally, I prefer a scope to binos because if binoculars are not aligned properly at the factory, then you get double images and distortions that cant be fixed.
But when you buy go Orion and you wont be disappointed. Don't try to learn everything all at once or you will be overwhelmed and discouraged. Patience is the key to Astronomy.
You will also need a good star chart program.

Are you wondering what are binocular telescopes? What benefit do they serve? Will they replace reflector telescopes or even refractors? Find out more about binocular telescopes in this article, and some information on how you would buy one. In this article, you will soon discover: * What are binocular telescopes? * What are the benefits of binocular telescopes? * Where can you buy binocular telescopes? * Some advice for binocular telescopes * What are binocular telescopes? Binocular telescopes are a recent backyard astronomy thing! They have become more popular as more people have been seeking to break through the boundaries of telescopes. A binocular telescope is exactly what it says it is. First you will find that it is a telescope! In most cases it is a refractor telescope, and in fact, it is 2 telescopes joined together! * What are the benefits of binocular telescopes? There are several benefits of binocular telescopes, however for the most part they are real luxuries, as it requires 2 telescopes! The main point of a telescope is its light gathering abilities, and the benefit of binocular telescopes is that in effect you get double if not more light gathering abilities! When you consider that both your eyes can get the same amount of light for each, something special happens. Users report that it creates like a stereo image, where objects don't look flat, but start to have a dimension such as appearing 3d. Another aspect is that some people have reported that they have seen slight color when viewing the planets. This could be because they have a large enough area of light gathering that is allows seeing the colors of the planets! * Where can you buy binocular telescopes? You won't find binocular telescopes everywhere. Finding a good reflector or refractor is hard enough finding, let alone binocular telescopes! However it is possible and there are options. There are some great manufacturers who are hobbyists that turned into making these big binocular telescopes for sale to others. They usually make to order, but you know you are getting something worthy and unique! * Some advice for binocular telescopes Finding a telescope store selling these jumbo telescopes is going to be hard to find. However, going online is a big option and one which can bring about several manufacturers. Another option is to build it yourself, and there are many options to building big binocular telescopes. The first obvious thing is that you will need 2 telescopes. Either refractors or reflectors. I suggest if you are going to build binocular telescopes yourself, then consider refractors as they are easier to work with. You will need to align them so they both meet your eyes and can be seen by both your eyes. The result can be immense, and can look amazing having a mammoth style binocular telescope in your backyard!

Choosing and Using a Refracting Telescope (Patrick Moore's Practical Astronomy Series) List Price: $34.95 Sale Price: $30.69 |
|
Choosing and Using a Refracting Telescope has been written for the many amateur astronomers who already own, or are intending to purchase, a refracting telescope â perhaps to complement their existing arsenal of larger reflecting telescopes â or for the specialist who requires a particular refractor for serious astronomical applications... |
Sir Isaac Newton is often considered as the greatest Astronomer and Mathematician to ever live. There is a lot of validity to this claim. This article looks at his famous reflector telescope and describes some of his discoveries.
A reflector telescope is one that uses a mirror rather than lenses to bend light and magnify images. Reflector telescopes, because they are easier to make and can be made in sizes much larger than refractors, are an invention that changed astronomy and our understanding of the universe. The largest refractor telescope in the world is forty inches in diameter and reflector telescopes dwarf this in comparison. There are currently several reflector type scopes that are over four hundred inches in diameter.
Why a reflector is better than a refractor
If you are familiar with a prism or a rainbow you can understand why reflectors are superior to refractors. When light passes through glass the different bands (or colors) pass through at different angles and this causes aberrations or problems in the images. This is called chromatic aberration and it gives us distorted views of what we see through a lens. In the time of Newton glass making and lens making was very primitive and the problems of chromatic aberration were not yet overcome. Today we can make lenses that have almost no chromatic aberration but we can’t make them very large. When a lens gets to be really large it gets very heavy and its own weight will distort the lens and ruin the image.
Newton’s telescope solved these problems. A mirror doesn’t pass light through it. It simply bounces all the light off the surface. There is no chromatic aberration at all. And because you only need to bounce light off the surface you can place the whole mirror on a supporting structure or base which takes a lot of the weight off the mirror. This way you can build much larger mirrors without any distortion.
It is commonly thought that Newton invented the first reflector telescope but it isn’t true. Credit for making the first reflector goes to and Italian Monk, Physicist, and Astronomer named Niccolo Zucchi. He published a book on Optics in the 1650’s and it is this book that inspired Sir Isaac Newton to build his own telescope. Zucchi created his first reflector around 1616 while Newton completed his first (and famous) telescope in 1670. But while Zucchi did make some new discoveries with his telescope it didn’t work well and was difficult to make and to use. It was Newton’s telescope that worked really well and that brought the art and science of reflectors into the world of science.
The real genius of Newton’s Telescope
All of that stuff is remarkable but there is something much more important in Newton’s Astronomy and in his telescope. He didn’t after all, discover moons around Jupiter like Galileo did, or plot the return of a comet like Halley did. But what he did do was tie in Mathematics, Astronomy, and our understanding of the universe using his telescope and his theory of universal gravitation. He proved mathematically that gravitation was a two way operation and that while the earth pulled on a falling apple so the apple too pulled on the earth. This was clearly seen, calculated, and confirmed in the motions of heavenly bodies which was refined and made possible by the new science of reflector telescopes which we can credit to Newton.
Sir Isaac and his telescope carried on with the work of Copernicus and Galileo by furthering our understanding of the universe we live in and helping us to realize there are laws that govern the whole of the universe. And this rule holds true for falling apples and for planets revolving around stars.
The actual telescope that Newton built still survives today and is in the care of the Royal Society of London. They keep it on display in London and sometimes it travels the world as part of an exhibit.

What's the difference between a reflector, refractor, and computerized telescope?
a refractor has an objective lense at one end and an eyepiece at the other. The light from an object passes through the objective lense, is focused upon the eyepiece, which focuses the image for your eye.
A reflector uses a mirror to gather light, then focus it on an eyepiece which focuses the image for your eye.
A computerized telescope is merely one which uses input on a keypad to point the telescope at the object you want to view. The computer usually has a list of thousands of stars, planets, galaxies, etc to which it can be pointed. The computerized scopes have to be pre-aimed at a couple of points in the sky, unless they are equipped with gps capability. In that case, you set up the scope, tell it to point at Jupiter and it will move to point at Jupiter (assuming that Jupiter is above the horizon.)

For starters, this guide is going to help answer a few of the questions that might be floating in your head as a first time telescope buyer. The internet has granted us unlimited access to some of the best astronomy information in existence, make use of it!
What different types of telescopes are there?
There are, typically, two types of telescopes on the market. The first type of telescope and typically the most effective for viewing planetary bodies is the refractor telescope. Refractor telescopes use lenses to magnify the image of space and bring it to your eye at an eye piece at the base of the telescope. The second type of telescope, which is found to be more effective for viewing deep space, is the reflector telescope. Reflector telescopes use a mirror technology first invented by Isaac Newton. Rather than use lenses to magnify the light waves, a parabolic mirror is used to reflect the image into a focus point and then reflected into an eyepiece that runs along the side of the telescope.
Which type of telescope is right for me?
Most beginner astronomers would likely start with a refractor telescope. The amount of maintenance and care that is needed to be given to this type of telescope is a lot less. A reflector telescope might need more care and maintenance, but it will prove to be more effective in the long run. One thing to keep in mind is your usage for these telescopes. If you plan to take your telescope camping and hiking, having something smaller and easier to travel with might be your deciding factor. Some astronomers are fortunate enough to have a great view of the skies from their own backyards, so having a top of the line telescope that doesn't need to travel much can be very effective for them.
Ok, but what about the cost?
There are very many high quality telescopes that can still fit into a budget. You might expect to pay somewhere between $100-200 for a telescope that fits the needs of any amateur astronomer. But keep in mind your increasing likeness toward this hobby. As with most products, the more money that you are willing to spend the better quality your telescope is going to be.
Refractor Telescopes are more travel-friendly, easier to use and maintain and very effective tools for viewing space. A great refractor might be the best choice for someone buying their first telescope.
Reflector Telescopes are going to be more effective at bringing all of the light and coloration to your eyes without distorting. They might be a bit bigger in size and might require more care and maintenance, but it's definitely worth the effort if you are getting serious about astronomy.

help w/ telescope lens'?
I just got my first telescope its a Meade with a 2.8 inch aperature. It came with the following lens': 25mm, a 9mm, and a 2x Barlow.
I know the barlow lens doubles the smaller lens' magnifying power. I would like to know which lens can see the furthest. I have been using the 25 and the barlow together and don't know how far I can zoom in to see say Saturn. I don't know how well I will be able to see this planet. Will it be fuzzy or with my scope will it only be a shining mass in the mirror. Oh my telescope is a refractor. I just want to see the rings of Saturn, if the focuser is all the way out will it be clearer or not?
Oh thanks I have a focal length of 10
Magnification is focal length of the objective divided by focal length of the eyepiece. The Barlow basically increases the focal length of the objective by the specified factor (2x in your case). So you need to know the focal length of your objective. If it isn't in your manual you can get a rough number by just measuring how long the telescope is.
If you have the Meade 70AZ-AR, as shown in the source, then the focal length is 700 mm. So the 25 mm eyepiece gives 700/25= 28 power and the 9mm gives 700/9= 78 power. With the Barlow you get double the power, or 56 and 156.
By the way, magnification has nothing to do with how far you can see, only how big something appears. It isn't the same thing at all. Also, any magnification higher than 50 times the objective lens diameter in inches (50 * 2.8 = 140 in your case) is useless, so the 156 you get with the 9mm and Barlow is really pushing the limit; I suspect you will rarely use it.
The 78 power you get with the 9 mm eyepiece alone is more than enough power to see the rings of Saturn. It will look small, but you will see the rings clearly. You move the focuser to whatever position makes the image clear. That is what it is for, not for zooming in. To "zoom in" you just change eyepieces. There are some zoom eyepieces made, but you don't have one, so you just select one of the 4 possible combinations to get the magnification you want.
25 mm = 28x
25 mm + Barlow = 56x
9 mm = 78x
9 mm + Barlow = 156x
To find the location of Saturn in the sky, try the second source. Saturn is easily seen as a bright star in the sky without using any telescope, just your eyes. When you know which star is Saturn, point your telescope at it using the lowest power (28). Once it is in the field of view, carefully, without moving the telescope at all, change to a higher power eyepiece. You will probably have to re-focus after changing eyepieces. I suggest the 9mm, 78 power one for the best view of Saturn. Your telescope is really too small to get a sharp, crisp looking image at 156 power, but you can try it anyway if you like.

if you already owned a 3 inch apo would you also get a 4 inch apo?
I have a 3 inch apo refractor and I am interested in also owning something with more aperture to complement the little scope. Is there a big enough difference in the 4 inch apo compared to the ed80, to justify the purchase? Or, should I save a few bucks and complement the ed80 with a ten inch dob? What would you do with a limited budget. Note: both apos are of the same brand and quality.
A 100mm Apo would be perfect for wide field Astrophotography, but so would an 80mm, which also has a wide field of view (depending on the focal length-usually f5-f6 or thereabouts).. They are both high quality, but you would be far better off buying a 10" Dob, it will be cheaper than a 100mm Apo and will give jaw dropping views of the planets, galaxies and many deep sky objects which need a high magnification. It will be difficult to take images through a Dob though without a special tracking mount for it.
