What Are Binocular Telescopes?

Are you wondering what are binocular telescopes? What benefit do they serve? Will they replace reflector telescopes or even refractors? Find out more about binocular telescopes in this article, and some information on how you would buy one. In this article, you will soon discover: * What are binocular telescopes? * What are the benefits of binocular telescopes? * Where can you buy binocular telescopes? * Some advice for binocular telescopes * What are binocular telescopes? Binocular telescopes are a recent backyard astronomy thing! They have become more popular as more people have been seeking to break through the boundaries of telescopes. A binocular telescope is exactly what it says it is. First you will find that it is a telescope! In most cases it is a refractor telescope, and in fact, it is 2 telescopes joined together! * What are the benefits of binocular telescopes? There are several benefits of binocular telescopes, however for the most part they are real luxuries, as it requires 2 telescopes! The main point of a telescope is its light gathering abilities, and the benefit of binocular telescopes is that in effect you get double if not more light gathering abilities! When you consider that both your eyes can get the same amount of light for each, something special happens. Users report that it creates like a stereo image, where objects don't look flat, but start to have a dimension such as appearing 3d. Another aspect is that some people have reported that they have seen slight color when viewing the planets. This could be because they have a large enough area of light gathering that is allows seeing the colors of the planets! * Where can you buy binocular telescopes? You won't find binocular telescopes everywhere. Finding a good reflector or refractor is hard enough finding, let alone binocular telescopes! However it is possible and there are options. There are some great manufacturers who are hobbyists that turned into making these big binocular telescopes for sale to others. They usually make to order, but you know you are getting something worthy and unique! * Some advice for binocular telescopes Finding a telescope store selling these jumbo telescopes is going to be hard to find. However, going online is a big option and one which can bring about several manufacturers. Another option is to build it yourself, and there are many options to building big binocular telescopes. The first obvious thing is that you will need 2 telescopes. Either refractors or reflectors. I suggest if you are going to build binocular telescopes yourself, then consider refractors as they are easier to work with. You will need to align them so they both meet your eyes and can be seen by both your eyes. The result can be immense, and can look amazing having a mammoth style binocular telescope in your backyard!

Tele Vue 2 Tele Vue 2" Everbrite Mirror Star (90°) Diagonal with Brass Clamp Ring -Black Satin Finish

Sale Price: $284.95

Description

Whiter and brighter images. Simply put, that is the benefit the Everbrite mirror coating. This exotic, dielectric, nonmetallic coating is 99% reflective across the full visual spectrum, resulting in the "whitest," most natural image available. The coating is painstakingly applied to Pyrex with a surface accuracy of a 1/10 wave flatness. The Everbrite is offered in both 1¼" and 2" models. The diagonal bodies of each are machined from solid blocks of aluminum. In this way we can insure permanent alignment. The one piece body construction also assures heavy accessories can't force the diagonal body to "unscrew" from the barrel as with other brands. Both the 1¼" and 2" models feature brass clamp rings, anti-reflection threads and 1¼" and 48mm filter threads respectively.

Features

  • The diagonal body is machined from a solid block of aluminum
  • Permanent alignment is assured
  • Features brass clamp rings, anti-reflection threads
  • The one piece body construction also means heavy accessories can't force the diagonal body to unscrew from the barrel
  • Ideal for refractor telescopes

Orion SpaceProbe 3 Altazimuth Reflector Telescope Orion SpaceProbe 3 Altazimuth Reflector Telescope

Sale Price: $99.99

Description

Orion's surprising little Spaceprobe 3 has been picked by independent reviewers as one of the best telescopes in its price class. Unlike similar telescopes seen in discount stores, Orion has refined the Spaceprobe 3 by paying attention to the little details, and that make this telescope a great value. The Spaceprobe 3 comes with an unusually complete set of accessories. The package includes two very good Explorer II eyepieces (25mm and 10mm), an adjustable altazimuth tripod, a good red-dot finder, a student edition of "The Sky" planetarium program, and a well written manual. The package even includes the tools you'll need to assemble the telescope and align the optics. The Spaceprobe 3 is a Newtonian reflector. That means it uses mirrors instead of lenses. Newtonians are primarily used for astronomy because the images are upside-down. Orion includes a collimation tool and good directions for aligning the mirrors. The reward for aligning the mirrors is seen in images that snap into sharp focus. My Spaceprobe 3 arrived properly aligned right out of the box. With its Explorer II eyepieces, this telescope consistently delivers fine views. Using the 25mm eyepiece (28x magnification) the Pleiades cluster is simply wonderful, showing dozens of stars. From a rural location with a dark sky, the Orion Nebula is a big ghostly glow, and when I zoom in with the 10mm eyepiece, the Trapezium resolves into four tiny pinpoints. The double star Gamma Andromeda becomes two beads of light, one gold, the other one pale blue. Moon and planet images are crisp, with none of the false color I see in low cost refractors. When I look at the Moon I see mountains and terraced walls inside the larger craters. With the 10mm eyepiece (about 70x), Saturn's rings are sharply separated from the planet, and I can even pick out the planet's shadow on the rings. The Altazimuth mount included with this telescope is light and easy to use; it may be the best choice for a young astronomer. If you want motorized tracking of the stars and planets, Orion's Spaceprobe 3 EQ is available with an equatorial mount, and Celestron sells essentially the same optical system with the computerized NexStar 76GT. -Jeff Phillips Pros: Best in class optical performance Two good Explorer II eyepieces Complete accessory package Cons: Small 76mm aperture Upside-down terrestrial images

If you're looking for an affordable entry-level telescope for that beginning astronomy enthusiast, our SpaceProbe 3 Altaz is the perfect choice. Great for all-around stargazing, this highly portable, uncomplicated scope is just the right size and weight for the entire family, and just the right price for parents. This is a quality telescope, with a 3" (76mm) glass primary mirror mounted in a sturdy Neptune Blue Metallic aluminum tube. The rack-and-pinion focuser accepts standard 1.25" eyepieces. Two Explorer II eyepieces, a low-power 25mm (28x) and a high-power 10mm (70x), are included. An EZ Finder II finder scope mounted on the tube helps zero-in on the sky target. The altazimuth mount is lightweight and easy to use. To aim it, simply move it up or down or left or right. An adjustable, aluminum tripod with accessory tray is also included. One-year limited warranty.

Features

  • A fantastic beginner telescope that's lightweight.
  • 76mm aperture reflector telescope is large enough for wonderful views of the Moon.
  • The included EZ Finder II makes finding celestial objects a breeze.
  • Includes two 1.25" telescope eyepieces, EZ Finder II reflex sight, smooth rack and pinion focuser.

Description

Choosing and Using a Refracting Telescope has been written for the many amateur astronomers who already own, or are intending to purchase, a refracting telescope – perhaps to complement their existing arsenal of larger reflecting telescopes – or for the specialist who requires a particular refractor for serious astronomical applications or nature studies. Four hundred year ago, during the winter of 1609, a relatively unknown Italian scientist, Galileo Galilei designed a spyglass with two crude lenses and turned it skyward. Since then, refractors have retained their dominance over all types of reflector in studies of the Moon, planets and double stars because of the precision of their optics and lack of a central obstruction in the optical path, which causes diffraction effects in all commercially-made reflectors. Most mature amateur astronomers got started with a 60mm refractor, or something similar. Thirty years ago, there was little choice available to the hobbyist, but in the last decade long focus crown-flint achromats have moved aside for some exquisitely crafted apochromatic designs offered by leading commercial manufacturers. There has been a huge increase in the popularity of these telescopes in the last few years, led by a significant increase in the number of companies (particularly, William Optics, Orion USA, StellarVue, SkyWatcher and AstroTech) who are now heavily marketing refractors in the amateur astronomical magazines. In Choosing and Using a Refracting Telescope, well-known observer and astronomy writer Neil English celebrates the remarkable history and evolution of the refracting telescope and looks in detail at the instruments, their development and their use. A major feature of this book is the way it compares not only different classes of refractor, but also telescopes of each class that are sold by various commercial manufacturers. The author is perhaps uniquely placed to do this, having used and tested literally hundreds of different refracting telescopes over three decades. Because it includes many diverse subjects such as imaging with consumer-level digital cameras, imaging with webcams, and imaging with astronomical CCD cameras – that are not covered together in equal depth in any other single volume – Choosing and Using a Refracting Telescope could become the ‘refractor bible’ for amateur astronomers at all levels, especially those who are interested in imaging astronomical objects of every class.

How Newton’s Telescope Changed the World

Sir Isaac Newton is often considered as the greatest Astronomer and Mathematician to ever live. There is a lot of validity to this claim. This article looks at his famous reflector telescope and describes some of his discoveries.

A reflector telescope is one that uses a mirror rather than lenses to bend light and magnify images. Reflector telescopes, because they are easier to make and can be made in sizes much larger than refractors, are an invention that changed astronomy and our understanding of the universe.  The largest refractor telescope in the world is forty inches in diameter and reflector telescopes dwarf this in comparison. There are currently several reflector type scopes that are over four hundred inches in diameter.

Why a reflector is better than a refractor

If you are familiar with a prism or a rainbow you can understand why reflectors are superior to refractors. When light passes through glass the different bands (or colors) pass through at different angles and this causes aberrations or problems in the images. This is called chromatic aberration and it gives us distorted views of what we see through a lens.  In the time of Newton glass making and lens making was very primitive and the problems of chromatic aberration were not yet overcome. Today we can make lenses that have almost no chromatic aberration but we can’t make them very large. When a lens gets to be really large it gets very heavy and its own weight will distort the lens and ruin the image.

Newton’s telescope solved these problems. A mirror doesn’t pass light through it. It simply bounces all the light off the surface. There is no chromatic aberration at all. And because you only need to bounce light off the surface you can place the whole mirror on a supporting structure or base which takes a lot of the weight off the mirror. This way you can build much larger mirrors without any distortion.

It is commonly thought that Newton invented the first reflector telescope but it isn’t true. Credit for making the first reflector goes to and Italian Monk, Physicist, and Astronomer named Niccolo Zucchi. He published a book on Optics in the 1650’s and it is this book that inspired Sir Isaac Newton to build his own telescope. Zucchi created his first reflector around 1616 while Newton completed his first (and famous) telescope in 1670.  But while Zucchi did make some new discoveries with his telescope it didn’t work well and was difficult to make and to use.  It was Newton’s telescope that worked really well and that brought the art and science of reflectors into the world of science.

The real genius of Newton’s Telescope

All of that stuff is remarkable but there is something much more important in Newton’s Astronomy and in his telescope.  He didn’t after all, discover moons around Jupiter like Galileo did, or plot the return of a comet like Halley did. But what he did do was tie in Mathematics, Astronomy, and our understanding of the universe using his telescope and his theory of universal gravitation.  He proved mathematically that gravitation was a two way operation and that while the earth pulled on a falling apple so the apple too pulled on the earth.  This was clearly seen, calculated, and confirmed in the motions of heavenly bodies which was refined and made possible by the new science of reflector telescopes which we can credit to Newton.

Sir Isaac and his telescope carried on with the work of Copernicus and Galileo by furthering our understanding of the universe we live in and helping us to realize there are laws that govern the whole of the universe.  And this rule holds true for falling apples and for planets revolving around stars.

The actual telescope that Newton built still survives today and is in the care of the Royal Society of London. They keep it on display in London and sometimes it travels the world as part of an exhibit.

What's the difference between a reflector, refractor, and computerized telescope?

a refractor has an objective lense at one end and an eyepiece at the other. The light from an object passes through the objective lense, is focused upon the eyepiece, which focuses the image for your eye.

A reflector uses a mirror to gather light, then focus it on an eyepiece which focuses the image for your eye.

A computerized telescope is merely one which uses input on a keypad to point the telescope at the object you want to view. The computer usually has a list of thousands of stars, planets, galaxies, etc to which it can be pointed. The computerized scopes have to be pre-aimed at a couple of points in the sky, unless they are equipped with gps capability. In that case, you set up the scope, tell it to point at Jupiter and it will move to point at Jupiter (assuming that Jupiter is above the horizon.)

Orion SpaceProbe 3 Altazimuth Reflector Telescope Orion SpaceProbe 3 Altazimuth Reflector Telescope

Sale Price: $99.99

Description

Description

Travel Scope 70 was designed with traveling in mind. Highest quality materials used to ensure stability and durability. Minimal maintenance

The Celestron 21035 Travel Scope 70 is a compact 70mm refractor telescope optimized for portability and convenience. The telescope, the tripod, and all the accessories fit conveniently into a padded backpack style soft carrying case. The complete accessory package includes a 45 degree correct image prism, a 20mm eyepiece for 20X magnification, and a 10mm eyepiece for 40X. The fully illustrated instruction manual is supplemented by a copy of "The Sky X" astronomy software that turns your PC into a virtual planetarium. With a focal length of 400mm and a focal ratio of f/5.7, the Travel Scope 70 compares surprisingly well with popular f/5 "Short Tube 80" refractors but at a much lower cost. The Travel Scope 70 uses a number of plastic components to keep the cost and weight down, including a plastic focuser and plastic lens shade, but the all glass lenses deliver beautiful views of backyard birds during the daytime and lovely views of the Moon and stars at night. The Travel Scope 70 offers daytime views that compare with more expensive spotting scopes. The 20mm eyepiece gives 20X magnification and a 2.5 degree field of view, with plenty of crisp detail when I’m looking at backyard birds. The travel Scope 70 is also quick and easy to set up at night. The deep orange glow of the recent Lunar Eclipse was simply gorgeous, and I was even able to take some pictures using the Travel Scope 70 and a PowerShot camera. When I look at Jupiter using the 10mm eyepiece (40X magnification) I can easily see four moons near the planet. And rich field views of the Milky Way are often at their best in a small scope with a wide field of view. The tripod included with the Travel Scope 70 is described as a “full size photo tripod”, but I like it best as a table-top tripod with the legs kept short. The tripod is designed to be light and compact, but that means the legs are thin and wobbly when fully extended. --Jeff Phillips Pros: Light, portable, and affordable Excellent wide field views Padded backpack style case High and low power eyepieces The Sky X software included Cons: Light weight tripod Plastic finder and focuser

Features

  • All coated glass optical elements for clear crisp images
