Meade RB-70 filters?

Hello, I have a 700 mm RB-70 Telescope Meade and wanted to put sunscreen on the scope to see the sun, but do not know if this scope can use a sunscreen or not? what about cleaning the mirrors? do u really have to?

You really shouldn't have to if it has been covered. I always make sure to put the lens cap back on, and then I throw a sheet over it if I am not putting back in the box. I also point it down (point the mirror down) so even if a little dust gets inside it wont settle on the mirror. Here is a website for you.....

Telescope tips ...?

Wanted to get my first "real" in the coming weeks telescope. I say first because I have a refractor Discovery Channel telescope for Christmas when I was 10 and really can only see the moon. I have been looking at two reflector telescopes, in particular. Looking at the Orion and Orion SkyQuest XT6, the Starblast 6. Both have six openings and both cost exactly the same. The only thing is, is said to be f / 4 and the other says f / 8. Can someone explain what this means? Moreover, what each of these telescopes is more appropriate to look?

I'm going to make things easy: get the XT6. The table on one side without a Dobs "are, without exception, not worth bothering with. The difference in focal ratio (f / 4 vs f8) describes the difference in the proportion the opening and the length of the tube. A shorter (lower) makes the shorter focal ratio of the tube but worse for many optical aberrations. A f / 8 coma (a distortion in particular) is almost a theme, but not f / 4 is very serious. It also means you have to be much more demanding of collimation (difficult for a beginner) and also need shorter focal length eyepiece (usually with poor eye relief) for the same increase. If they have the same price and portability is not the first consideration the decision is a no brainer.

What is the best camera lens for astrophotography?

I want to buy a camera kit and use it for astrophotography. My budget is around $1,000 Australian dollars for the actual camera body.

What are the best cameras, lenses and tripods you would recommend for astrophotography without using a telescope?

First I would like to start with planets, and then try nebulae.

And also, are there any specific brands that are best for this, and why?

people usually use their DSLR and a modified telescope to do such things. Ordinary lenses won't be able to reach that far into the space.

Tripod... there are specialized tripod to do astrophotography - but it's kinda expensive and quite complex to operate because in astrophotography you're going to need to adjust your camera to follow the earth's rotation.

Nebulae... well I doubt you can reach that far except if you have a large telescope such as found in observatories.

Repair Your Canon SD Series Lens Covers Yourself And Save!

Many people have asked about repairing their front covers/flaps on their Canon PowerShot SD series cameras, so I've written up some instructions. Please let others know if you found this article helpful.

The barrier kit on most Canon PowerShot SD series cameras is a little tricky but not impossible to replace yourself. All you need is some patience, a steady hand and a small tipped screwdriver. We use dental picks, they work great!

To start, you will need to turn on the camera and extend the lens, then open the battery door to turn off the camera and keep the lens out. This allows you to easily work on the lens barrier assembly.

The first part that goes in is the barrel drive ring; it has a small part sticking down into the lens. Some cameras don't have one, so if there isn't one in your kit then your camera doesn't need it. Make sure it rotates slightly once it has been inserted, otherwise its not in properly and will jam the lens.

Next are the springs and flaps. Put one spring on each of the flaps, there are little tabs to hold them on. They are TINY, they are hard to hold and if you drop it... lets just say DON'T drop it on the carpet, ok? We do have just the springs available for purchase, but please try not to lose them.

Gently put the flap in the hole with the spring laying towards the post that the free end will mount on; then with something with a very small tip (we use dental picks!) gently grab the loop of the spring and stick it on its post.

Do this with the flaps in the open position, they will stay in place if you get them seated properly. If everything pops off, just start again. Try not to stretch out the springs, they need to remain tight for the assembly to work properly.

Then gently put on the barrier cover, it's a flat plastic ring. There are tabs on the barrier cover, they match up with little slots on the lens and it locks into place. Be gentle, don't force anything too hard or you will break it and the parts will not hold it place.

Now it's time to test your skills! Put in the battery (cross your fingers) and press the power button! Did it work? Did it go *SPROING!* and all the parts flew across the room? Yeah I hope not, but I?ve been there myself so you?re not alone.

Once you have it working smoothly:

Next put the dual sided tape on the barrier cover. VERY IMPORTANT: Peel the tape off the yellow backing paper but DO NOT remove the paper from the side that is cut to match the shape of the tape!! Removing the small paper part will cause the tape to fold up on itself and stick together. Bye bye tape!

The tabs fold over the edge, don't let them stick out or the lens cover won't fit and the lens will jam. The tape lines up with one tab at about the 11 o'clock position, then fold the tabs over and press them in so they don't stick out.

Now put on your chrome or black lens cap, line up the cap with the small indentation at the bottom, you'll see how it goes on easily.

Fire up the camera again and admire your handywork! Congratulations you repaired your camera yourself for $20 and the good old Geek Squad told you it would be $200 and take 3-4 weeks to repair.

Hmm... I think I'm seeing the beginning of something big here! =)

For your money you get fully coated lenses, rubber coated, water resistant bodies and a no-fault lifetime warranty. This series includes high powered compact binoculars (12x25 & 16x32), objective diameters up to 50mm (including a 20x50) and a wide angle & zoom option. The downside is the prisms are Bk7 rather than Bak-4 (which is a better quality) and the lenses are fully coated rather than fully multi-coated but for the money the specification and performance is good.

With compact binoculars Celestron do have some strong competitors, even in the low price range including Nikon, Pentax and Olympus (who offer the widest choice), all good makes and all worth a look at. Canon do a compact IS binocular and Steiner make some excellent high quality compact binoculars ranging from about £50 - £300.

If you want to move up a grade then take a look at the Outland series, again available in compact and full-size models. These Celestrom binoculars are waterproof and fog-free, ideal for tough outdoor pursuits, and come with multi-coated (not fully multi-coated lenses, this is available in the Outland LX series), top quality Bak-4 prisms, twist-up eyecups for long eye relief (ideal for spectacle wearers) and a lifetime warranty. Excellent value for money at under £100 or the LX series for under £125.

There is strong competition in full-size binoculars with Leica and Swarovski capturing the top end of the market. If you are looking for high quality but don't have £1000+ then Steiner, Nikon, Pentax and Bushnell offer and excellent choice and

For affordable marine binos then look no further than the Oceana series Celestrom binoculars which come with a range finding dial and compass. However, if you want truly top notch marine binoculars then don't make a purchase before checking out the Steiner Commander series which are salt water resistant, protected against environmental pressures, waterproof to 10 mtrs, long-life rubber armoured, auto focusing and guaranteed for 30 years, truly special.

If you want to get into astronomy but don't want to spend a fortune Celestron do a range of affordable binoculars to get you started. The Skymaster series are priced as low as £50 or, if you want a telescope then Celestron has a vast selection of low cost beginner models right up through to the top of the range.

In this digital era, no range would be complete without digital binoculars. The Celestron Vistapix allows you to store pictures, download them onto a TV or laptop and print quickly and easily starting from around £50.

What Celestron are missing is an image stabilizing model so if you want an 'IS' option then Canon offer the widest range.

So are Celestrom binoculars, the right binoculars for you? Well that depends on what you want to use them for and how much you have to spend. It has to be said that they offer excellent value for money and a wide choice at the lower end of the market. If you can afford it and you are going to be using your binoculars regularly you should seriously check out some of the competition with top quality optics well worth paying for. Don't look at Leica or Swarovski though unless you have serious cash to spend as once you hold binoculars by either of these nothing else will be quite good enough!!
