telescope for astronomy

What is the difference between astronomy telescopes and telescopes for stargazing?

I am thinking of buying a telescope I do not know the difference between them. I want to use my telescope for just looking at Saturn, Mars and other planets, perhaps near the stars to see what I can see and space station and satellites!

the same difference between a bat hitting basball designed for one designed for batting.

Steel batons - Small but powerful

Steel batons ultimately only have a job to do - that make an attacker wishes had never attacked!

In these dangerous times and especially with the economy struggling, there is no more possible than ever it will be attacked by a thug who want their money or worse.

Now with his Baton telescopic steel can feel safe and secure while walking the street or in a dark parking lot and even at home.

Some of the advantages of a Baton telescopic steel are:

1) steel batons are compelling Lightweight so you can hit the attacker and again. Many people say they would use a bat - Just remember, you may only get one swing with the bat and if you forget ...

2) You have the opportunity to hit the attacker where you want - it will be more willing to listen to reason and fled after being beaten once or twice with his sword Baton, especially if you say "next is on the face."

3) You do not have to be strong to handle one - Anyone can handle a steel telescopic Baton with practice, regardless of how big you are or how much it weighs. Usually come in three different sizes for match your body height.

4) However, you have to break the practice of Baton steel in the extended locked position - that's what makes it telescope. The Baton closes at approximately 12.7 inches, depending on the size expanded. Sometimes it is better to take it broke down and fully extended for immediate use, especially if you're in an enclosed space like a dark parking lot. The attacker never saw it coming!

Another thing - it's a good idea to carry a personal alarm with you along with your Baton telescopic steel that will attract much attention if you happen to be attacked. The personal alarm is very loud! More witnesses means better timeliness of their attacker being caught by police.

No crime statistics coming! A Baton telescopic steel and will keep you safe sure any would-be bad guy who wants to cause problems.

If you really want to stay ahead of her attacker needs a steel Telescopic Baton. For more information, please visit our website http://www.feelsafeandsecure.com/telescopic_steel_batons.html and will not be the next victim.

Buy for my age first telescope 12 years of age. I want a decent without spending more than what is best for this time?

This is the first child my telescope and I want to be able to see stars and other details that I have tried to read about telescopes on the internet and I am more confused than when I started. Please give their opinion about a person who has tried or any information you may know I am also open to suggestions. Thanks

First, for see the stars and other details, a couple of good quality binoculars is often all you need. If one takes seriously the observation, much can be done, even with the eye naked. Digital (those with an exposure) can really help you understand the night sky, and is used in conjunction with binoculars can really generate images good. Star trails photos can be really fascinating, and you can even take one or two meteors if you're lucky. The observation of planetary movements and stuff It is also very interesting, and through good binoculars you can see many constellations, star clusters and other things. Of course, if your child is strong and wants see deep sky objects like nebulae and galaxies, then a telescope would be in order. Before doing that though, make sure you use largely and consider some points 1) Pollution of air and light in your area may seriously limit the observation, even through a telescope. I mean, what expected to learn by looking through a telescope, with not even know what they are looking at and that the constellation that is, because of air and / or pollution light that obscures the sky? 2) The amount of time you spend observing and monitoring the frequency of sessions. If he intends to serious note, he deserves some good quality (which need not be expensive). 3) your child's interest in astronomy. Will you use with sincerity, or Will let it rot in a corner gathering dust? Hopefully the first, if not, then consider getting a smaller model with less increase, which is more easy on your budget. Any offense taken by said child is not intentional. There are two types of reflectors and refractor telescope. Refractors are generally more expensive and less transportable, and require more maintenance than reflectors, but they are better in terms of power and magnifiation, and are best suited to deep sky observations. Manual of telescopes are definitely cheaper than the automatic, and can be as productive with the right equipment (a good book, for example.) Well, after microphones hidden from my parents for a very long time, finally I have my own telescope when he was eleven. It is a Meade reflector. It is very good, has a remote control called "Autostar" that zooms in certain astronomical objects without having to drive. It also has a manual control, which is useful if you want to experience first hand where to find a particular celestial object. It costs U.S. $ 180 (which, incidentally, is about 9,000 rupees). It is a good model for the price, although it we need to know your budget. Include in your data. Also, if you go for a telescope, a very useful thing is a planisphere, says that when in heaven can be found a certain constellations, and this together with a telescope / binoculars / young and enthusiastic piercing eyes, eyes hardly enthusiastic (lol) can really put on a good point session. I hope that helps, and best of luck!

13 Unsolved Scientific Puzzles!

1. MOST OF THE UNIVERSE IS MISSING

We can only account for 4 per cent of the cosmos

If you’re wondering what the LHC might do for you, how’s this: it might just find a whole quarter of the universe. The collider is hoping to create some particles of what physicists call "dark matter", an enigma that is thought to make up roughly 25 per cent of the universe. Then there is the "dark energy", a mysterious force that seems to be ripping space and time apart. In total, a whopping 96 per cent of the universe has gone AWOL. Unless, that is, we’ve got our maths all wrong. Watch this space.

Times Archive: Pioneer 11 arrival at Saturn, 1974

3. VARYING CONSTANTS

Destabilising our view of the universe

A decade ago, we discovered that the fundamental constants of physics might not be so constant after all. These are the numbers that describe just how strong the forces of nature are, and make the laws of physics work when we use them to describe the processes of nature. Light that has travelled across the universe from distant stars tells us those laws might have been different in the past. Though the physical laws and constants have helped us define and tame the natural world, they might be an illusion.

4. COLD FUSION

Nuclear energy without the drama

In 1989, the world was rocked by claims that you could release nuclear energy without a catastrophic explosion. Various failures to replicate or explain these results soon ended the careers of the scientists involved. But, despite what you might have heard, "cold fusion" never really went away. Over a 10-year period from 1989, US navy labs ran more than 200 experiments to investigate whether nuclear reactions generating more energy than they consume - supposedly only possible inside stars - can occur at room temperature. Numerous researchers have since pronounced themselves believers. With controllable cold fusion, many of the world’s energy problems would melt away: no wonder the US Department of Energy is interested again.

5. LIFE

Are you more than just a bag of chemicals?

Are you more than the sum of the inanimate chemicals that make up your body? What turns a living tree into a lifeless piece of wood? No one knows. Researchers have even given up trying to define what life is. But they are still trying to understand it - by making it from scratch. In labs across the world, people are taking the raw materials of living things and trying to put them together in a way that makes them come alive. In an effort to resolve the anomalous nature of life, the idea of scientists playing God has taken a whole new turn. Times Archive: Dr Edmund Leach on when scientists play God, 1968

6. METHANE FROM MARTIANS

NASA scientists found evidence for life on Mars. Then they changed their minds

On July 20, 1976, the Viking landers scooped up some Martian soil and mixed it with radioactive nutrients. The mission’s scientists all agreed that if radioactive methane was released from the soil, something must be eating the nutrients - and there must be life on Mars. The experiment gave a positive result, but NASA denied an official detection of Martian life. Today, there is even more evidence that something is creating methane on Mars. Is it life? The Viking experiment suggests it was. Martin Rees, England’s astronomer royal, calls the search for extraterrestrial life the most important scientific endeavour of our time. But have we already found it? Times Archive: Spacecraft evidence suggests life on Mars was possible, 1976

7. THE WOW! SIGNAL

Has ET already been in touch?

It was an electromagnetic pulse that came from the direction of the Sagittarius constellation. It lasted 37 seconds and had exactly the characteristics predicted for an alien signal. Maybe that’s why, on 15 August 1977 it caused astronomer Jerry Ehman to scrawl "Wow!" on the printout from Big Ear, Ohio State University’s radio telescope in Delaware. The nearest star in that direction is 220 light years away. If that really is where is came from, it would have had to be a pretty powerful astronomical event - or an advanced alien civilisation using an astonishingly large and powerful transmitter. More than 30 years later, its origin remains a mystery. Times Archive: ET, The Extra Terrestrial, The Times review 1982

8. A GIANT VIRUS

It’s a freak that could rewrite the story of life

Mimivirus is sitting in a freezer in Marseille. Around thirty times bigger than the rhinovirus that gives you a common cold, it is by far the biggest virus known to science. But this virus’s biggest impact won’t be on the healthcare systems of the globe. It will be, most likely, on the history of life on Earth. Mimivirus doesn’t fit with the established story of how life on Earth got going. Mimi has a genome that, in parts, looks like yours. Mimivirus seems to be part of the story of life on Earth. It may even make us rewrite it.

9. DEATH

Evolution’s problem with self-destruction

Why must we die? It is a question that splits biologists, and over the years, theories have been batted back and forth as new evidence comes to light. One answer is that death is simply necessary - to avoid overcrowding, for instance. But evolution doesn’t - can’t - select for a "death switch" because evolution is supposed to be all about the inpidual. And yet there does seem to be a death switch: researchers have managed to locate genetic switches that massively extend the lifespan of some nematode worms. Can we solve the riddle of death? Times Archive: Why die? Experiments in immortality, 1921

10. SEX

There are better ways to reproduce

Sex is everywhere, but no one knows why. It is a question that "better scientists than I have spent book after book failing to answer," says Richard Dawkins. To Charles Darwin, the reason for the prevalence of sexual reproduction was "hidden in darkness". All the arguments in favour of sexual reproduction are countered by stronger arguments in favour of self-cloning: asexual reproduction, where an organism produces a copy of itself, is a much more efficient way to pass your genes down to the next generation. There’s no proof that sex makes a species more resilient, or better placed to cope with change. Why is it still around? Times Archive: Darwin on the Descent of Man, 1871 Part 1 Part 2

11. FREE WILL

Your decisions are not your own

Our gut instinct, our experience, is that we make the decisions to move, to think, to eat, to steal, to lie, to punch and kick. We have constructed the entire edifice of our civilisation on this idea. But science says this free will is a delusion. According to the world’s best neuroscientists, we are brain-machines. Our brains create the sense that somewhere within them is the "you" that makes decisions. But it is an illusion; there is no ghost in the machine. What does this mean for our sense of self? And for our morality - can we prosecute people for acts over which they had no conscious control? Times Archive: Necessity and free will, 1877

12. THE PLACEBO EFFECT

Who’s being deceived?

The placebo effect used to be thought of as just a manipulation, a mind-trick. Doctors wore white coats, spoke in soothing tones, exuding confidence and medical know-how, and if they told you a pill would make you better, it would. By the time you found out it was just a sugar pill, you were feeling great, so who cares? Well, lots of people, actually, because our new understanding of placebo is messing up medicine. Some prescription drugs that were judged to perform "better than placebo" in clinical trials don’t work unless you know you’re taking them. All in all, the gold standard of medicine, the placebo-controlled clinical trial, is looking a little peaky. Times Archive: Science report: Endorphins and the placebo effect, 1978

13. HOMEOPATHY

It’s patently absurd, so why won’t it go away?

Homeopathy’s claim is that you can take a substance of dubious properties, dilute it to the point where there are no molecules of the original substance left in the sample you have, and still use it to heal sickness. Sir John Forbes, the physician to Queen Victoria’s household, called it "an outrage to human reason." There is no justification in all of science for this idea — and yet there remains some slim evidence that homeopathy works. How can this be? Times Archive: Advertisement: The New Homoeopathy, 1914

Need help focusing my telescope on planets?

I bought the Celestron Astromaster 114 EQ Newtonian mount reflector a few weeks ago. Aperture is 114 mm, focal length is 1000mm, it came with two eyepieces: 20 mm and 10mm. Star Diagonal is 1.25 inch.

So here's my problem: i can focus it in the sky well, but after focusing, the stars & planets I see through the eye pieces are the same size as I would see using my naked eye! I am a little bummed about this, I am not able to understand why there is no magnication of planets. There are two planets in the sky which I can easily make out through my naked eye, but when I focus on them, they appear in the same size and dont get magnified! When I foucs on terrestrial objects, there is good magnification and I can see far off objects quite well! But when it comes to sky, I dont understand why there is no magnification.

Any advice will help. Also, do I have to buy more powerful eye pieces? If so what size?

There is nothing wrong with your telescope. The problem is with your expectations.

First of all, stars. There is no telescope on Earth which can show a star as anything other than a point of light: all stars are so far away that they will never show a disk. However, if you look at a double star, such as Mizar in the handle of the Big Dipper, you will see that the separation between the components increases greatly with magnification.

Secondly, planets. The planets are all much smaller than beginners expect. Mars is particularly disappointing in this respect. Your telescope really is magnifying them by the amount calculated (50x with the 20mm, 100x with the 10mm), but the disk is so small to start with that you don't realise this. At present the disk of Mars is incredibly small, and requires at least an 8" telescope and at least 250x to show it. You should do better with Saturn, which is now rising in the East in the evening sky, but again it will be smaller than you expect, and will require quite a bit of training of your eye to see much detail.

I'd try an eyepiece around 7mm focal length (143x). That's probably about the most magnification your telescope can support.

One day a man appeared in Portugal, who said he was certain that the earth was round, and that he could reach India by sailing westward. Every one laughed at him and asked him how he would like to try. He answered that he would sail round the earth, if any one would provide him with ships.

People jeered and scoffed.

"If the earth is a sphere," they said, "in order to sail round it you must sail uphill! Who ever heard of a ship sailing uphill?"

But this man, whose name was Christopher Columbus, remained firm in his belief.

When a boy, Columbus had listened eagerly to the stories the sailors told about strange lands and wonderful islands beyond the water. He was in the habit of sitting on the wharves and watching the ships. Often he would say, "I wish, oh, how I wish I could be a sailor!"

At last his father, who was a wool comber, said to him, "My son, if you really wish to become a sailor, I will send you to a school where you will be taught navigation."

Columbus was delighted at this, and told his father that he would study diligently. He was sent to the University of Pavia, where he learned all the geography that was then known, as well as how to draw maps and charts. He became a skillful penman, and also studied astronomy, geometry, and Latin.

But he did not spend a long time at his studies, for at the age of fourteen he went to sea. What he had learned, however, gave him an excellent groundwork, and from this time forward he made use of every opportunity to inform himself and to become a scholarly man.

His first voyage was made with a distant relative, who was an adventurous and daring man, and who was ever ready to fight with any one with whom he could pick a quarrel. In course of time Columbus commanded a ship of his own, and became known as a bold and daring navigator. He made a voyage along the coast of Africa as far south as Guinea, and afterwards sailed northward to Iceland.

At an early day he became familiar with the wildest kind of adventure, for at this time sea life on the Mediterranean was little more than a series of fights with pirates. Some say that during one of these conflicts Columbus's ship caught fire. In order to save his life, he jumped into the water and swam six miles to shore, reaching the coast of Portugal. Others say that he was attracted to that country by the great school of navigation which Prince Henry had established. However that may be, he appeared at Lisbon at the age of thirty-five, filled with the idea of sailing westward to reach those rich Eastern countries in which every one was so much interested.

He was laughed at for expressing such an idea. It is not pleasant to be laughed at, but Columbus was courageous and never wavered in his belief.

"The earth is a sphere," he said; "those foolish stories of its being flat and supported on a turtle's back cannot be true."

But those persons to whom he talked only laughed the more.

"Is there anything more foolish," they asked, "than to believe that there are people who walk with their heels up and with their heads hanging down?" "Think of a place where the trees grow with their branches down, and where it snows, hails, and rains upward!"

Everybody thought him an idle dreamer.

Columbus tried to persuade King John to furnish him with ships and allow him to test his belief. But King John cruelly deceived Columbus; for, after obtaining his maps and charts, he sent off an expedition of his own. He hoped in this way to gain the glory of the discovery. The sailors whom he sent, however, were not brave enough to continue the voyage, and returned, frightened by a severe storm.

Columbus was so disgusted by the treachery of King John that he made up his mind to leave Portugal and go to Spain. So, taking his little son, Diego, with him, he started on his journey. He traveled from place to place, trying to find some person who would help him make his ideas known to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. He thought that if he could talk with them he could persuade them to furnish him with ships.

One day he came to a convent called La Rábida. Here Diego, who was weary and thirsty, begged his father to stop and ask for a drink of water. Columbus knocked at the big iron gate, and while he was conversing with the attendant a priest approached.

This priest was attracted by the noble bearing and refined speech of Columbus, and saw at once that he was not a beggar. He asked him what he wished, and Columbus related his story.

The good priest believed in him and said he would try to influence the king and queen to furnish him with ships. The priest brought the matter before the king; but at this time Spain was at war with the Moors, and King Ferdinand had no time to attend to anything else. Columbus was patient and waited. But as year after year passed and brought no prospect of obtaining the ships he wished, his hopes fell. After seven long, weary years of waiting, he was about to leave Spain in despair.

Just as he was leaving, however, a message was brought to him from the queen, asking him to explain his plans to her once more. Columbus did so, and the queen was so fully convinced that she exclaimed: "I will provide ships and men for you, if I have to pledge my jewels in order to do so!"

Three ships were fitted out for the voyage. These ships were very different from those we see to-day. They were light, frail barks called caravels, and two of them, the Pinta and Niña, had no decks. The third, the Santa Maria, had a deck. It was upon this largest caravel that Columbus placed his flag.

On the 3d of August, 1492, the little fleet set sail from Palos, entering upon the most daring expedition ever undertaken by man. The people of the town gathered on the wharf to see the departure of the vessels. Many of them had friends or relatives on board whom they expected never to look upon again. Sad indeed was the sight as the little caravels sailed out of the harbor and faded from view.

After sailing a few days, the Pinta broke her rudder. This accident the sailors took to be a sign of misfortune. They tried to persuade Columbus to put back to Palos, but he would not listen to such a suggestion. Instead of sailing back, he pushed on to the Canary Islands. Here his ships were delayed three weeks, after which they continued the voyage into unknown waters.

After they had sailed westward for many days, the sailors began to show signs of alarm, and they implored Columbus to return. He tried to calm their fears. He described the rich lands he hoped to find, and reminded them of the wealth and fame this voyage would bring to them. So they agreed to venture a little farther.

At last the compass began to point in a different direction, and the sailors became almost panic-stricken. They thought they were sailing straight to destruction, and when they found that Columbus would not listen to their entreaties they planned a mutiny. Though Columbus knew what the sailors were plotting, he kept steadily on his course. Fortunately, signs of land soon began to appear. A branch with berries on it floated past, a rudely carved paddle was picked up, and land birds were seen flying over the ships.

A prize had been offered to the sailor who first saw land, and all eagerly watched for it night and day. At last, early one morning, a gun was fired from the Pinta, and all knew that land had been sighted. The sailors were filled with the wildest joy, and crowded around Columbus with expressions of gratitude and admiration, in great contrast to the distrustful manner in which they had treated him a few days before.

The land they were approaching was very beautiful. It was a green, sunny island with pleasant groves in which birds were singing. Beautiful flowers were blooming all around and the trees were laden with fruit. The island was inhabited, too, for groups of strange-looking men were seen running to the shore.

At length the ships cast anchor, the boats were lowered, and Columbus, clad in rich scarlet and carrying in his hand the royal banner of Spain, was taken ashore. As soon as he stepped on the beach, Columbus knelt down and gave thanks to God. He then planted the banner of Spain in the ground and took possession of the country in the name of Ferdinand and Isabella.

This island he called San Salvador, because he and his crew had been saved from a watery grave, and also because October 12 was so named in the Spanish calendar.

Columbus supposed San Salvador to be one of the islands near the coast of Asia, but it is one of the Bahamas.

Thus was America discovered on the 12th of October, 1492.

The natives of this island were different from any people the Spaniards had ever seen. They were of a reddish-brown color, and had high cheek bones, small black eyes, and straight black hair. They were entirely naked, and their bodies were greased and painted. Their hair was decorated with feathers, and many of them were adorned with curious ornaments.

They were at first very much afraid of the white men and kept far away. But gradually they lost their fear and brought the Spaniards presents of bananas and oranges. Some of them gathered courage enough to touch the Spaniards and pass their hands over them, as if to make certain that they were real beings. These men, whose skin was so white, they thought to be gods who had come down from the sky.

When Columbus asked them where they found the gold of which many of their ornaments were made, they pointed toward the south. Then Columbus took some of them with him to search for the land of gold.

The next land he reached was the island of Cuba. Thinking that this was a part of India, he called the natives Indians. He then sailed to Haiti, which he called Hispaniola, or "Little Spain." For more than three months Columbus cruised among these islands, where the air was always balmy, the sky clear, and the land beautiful. The sailors believed these new lands were Paradise, and wanted to live there always.

At length, however, they thought of returning to their home and friends. So, taking several Indians with them, and many curious baskets and ornaments, they set out on their return voyage.

This voyage proved to be very stormy, and at one time it seemed certain that the ships would go down; but after a time the sea grew quiet, and on the 15th of March they sailed again into the little harbor of Palos.

You can imagine the excitement.

"What! has Columbus returned?" asked the people. "Has he really found the East by sailing westward?"

"Yes, he has," was the answer. "He has found India."

Columbus was given a royal welcome. The king and queen held a great celebration in his honor at Barcelona; and when the Indians marched into court the astonishment of every person was great. The Indians were half naked; their dark bodies were painted, and their heads were adorned with feathers. They carried baskets of seed pearls, and wore strange ornaments of gold. Some carried the skins of wild animals, and others carried beautiful birds of brilliant plumage. Every inhabitant of Barcelona rejoiced, and the bells were rung in honor of the great discoverer.

It was a happy time for Columbus. He felt repaid for all his suffering and trouble.

King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella now wished Columbus to go again to these newly discovered islands and search for the gold that was thought to be there. You may be sure Columbus was willing to go. So they fitted out seventeen vessels, manned by fifteen hundred men, and placed Columbus in command of this fleet. It was no trouble to find men who were willing to go on this voyage. All wanted to see the new world that had been found.

During this second voyage, which was made in 1493, Columbus discovered Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and some small islands in the Caribbean Sea.

On the island of Jamaica the Spaniards came upon the footprints of some strange animal which they thought to be a dragon. This dragon they believed was guarding the gold which they supposed was on the island. So they ran back to their ships in fear. Later on they became used to seeing these footprints, and found that they were those of alligators. At Puerto Rico they suffered from a savage attack made by the natives, who shot poisoned arrows and threw javelins at them. But in most other places the natives were very friendly.

Columbus thought this land was a part of the east coast of Asia, and he could not understand why he did not find cities such as Marco Polo had described.

Columbus then sailed to Hispaniola, where he planted a colony, of which he was made governor. It was not an easy matter to govern this island, because of the jealousies and quarrels of the Spaniards. At length Columbus returned to Spain, ill and discouraged.

Columbus made a third voyage in 1498, during which he sailed along the coast of Brazil, and discovered Trinidad Island. Here his ships encountered currents of fresh water which flowed with great force into the ocean. This led Columbus to think that so large a river must flow across a great continent, and strengthened his opinion that the land was a part of the great continent of Asia.

After sailing farther north along the Pearl Coast, which was so called because of the pearls found there, he returned to Hispaniola. Here he found the Spaniards engaged in an Indian war, and quarreling among themselves. Some officials became jealous of him, bound him with chains, and sent him back to Spain a prisoner. Ferdinand and Isabella were much displeased at this treatment of Columbus, and set him free.

A fourth voyage was made by Columbus in 1502, during which he explored the coast of Honduras in search of a strait leading to the Indian Ocean. In this venture he was unsuccessful. On his return to Spain he found his friend Queen Isabella very ill, and nineteen days after his arrival she died.

After Isabella's death the king treated Columbus cruelly and ungratefully. The people had become jealous of him, and his last days were spent in poverty and distress. He never knew that he had discovered a new continent, but supposed that he had found India.

Seven years after his death the king repented of his ingratitude, and caused the remains of Columbus to be removed from the little monastery in Valladolid to a monastery in Seville, where a magnificent monument was erected to his memory. In 1536 his bones were removed to the Cathedral of San Domingo in Hispaniola, and later they were taken to the cathedral in Havana.

When the United States took possession of Cuba, the Spanish disinterred the bones of Columbus again and carried them to Spain, placing them in the cathedral of Seville, where they now are.

Nasa'S Kepler Mission Rockets Into Space In Search Of Other Earths - Are We Alone?

March 6th the hunt for life in Space started a new era.

NASA's Kepler Mission Rockets into Space in Search of Other Earths

NASA's Kepler mission successfully launched

NASA launched its new space telescope called Kepler on March 6th 2009 and will attempt to bring the human race a step closer to the eternal question - are we alone?

It is an historical project as we can be able to get new perspectives on human life itself.

Some fundamental questions will be attacked in this mission that has been part of human quest for a long time, ever since the humans began to look up into the sky and see the world of stars above our heads.

Measuring extreme low changes in strength of light, will enable the telescope to find habitats similar to our earth in space.

Researchers believe strongly that there are billions of planets like ours within our own Milky way system. Some of these may have the potential of life.

Kepler telescope will look for earth like planets in a distance from the sun, similar to the distance earth has. In this zone of interest there will be potential for water, which again will give raise to potential of sustainable life as we know it. The larger amount of planets similar to ours, the larger chance there is for finding life forms.

Kepler is looking out for small objects in a distance of over three thousand light years, which is really hard to grasp for human mind. It is a large distance, and the objects we are looking for, are very small. Kepler has the ability to detect these small objects at these distances due to its high sensitivity of the equipment onboard.

On of the researchers on the Kepler team, William Borucki, said they will not be able to find E.T himself, but maybe find his home. Maybe in the future it will be possible to establish whether these objects have life on them, and observe its activities. However, at the moment, we do not have the technology to determine this.

As long as we receive light from these planets, we will be able to analyze and observe chemical substances and look for signatures of life.

The first exo planet in orbit around another star was discovered first time in 1995 and there has been found another 342 new ones since then. However, most of these giant planets are made of only gas, like our own Jupiter and Saturn, and they are extremely hot. None of these are believed to be like our planet. These objects are different from our earth planet, and can not have life as we know about from our knowledge at this moment. These objects are very close to their star, and are probably being fried by their sun.

Technology has not enabled us so far to detect other objects than these 341 ones, and its not s sign of that there are not objects like our earth present in these regions.

The question everybody has asked themselves through history of science is if our solar system is unique and out of the ordinary or it is quite normal out in deeper space what we have in our solar system. Kepler telescope is a space based system that will enable us to tell us more about this, as terrestrial based systems are to prone to noise and signal dampening to be able to detect things Kepler telescope will be able to.

Kepler telescope will be able to continuously observe more than 100.000 stars that are up to three thousand light years away from us in the Cygnus Lyra region of the Milky way system.

The telescope will be in earth orbit for over three years before the researchers can determine whether we have detected a similar object as the photo (Pale blue dot) from the astronomer Carl Saga showed the world of earth from a satellite far away from earth (farthest away ever taken of earth).

If Kepler telescope does not detect anything, it will establish theories about our place in the universe, which will remodel some theories existing today.  Researchers' states they would be surprised if they do not find anything with Kepler.

About the Author

He has a background as civil engineer and geoscientist. He has worked mainly within the oil and gas industry from the mid 1980s. He has written a few fictional novels as well as being the author of some professional litterature within oil and gas sector, he is now an editor of some web sites.

Is this true that Powerful new telescopes will shed light on terrestrial planets around distant stars,?

Powerful new telescopes will shed light not only on gas giants but on the abundance of smaller, terrestrial planets around distant stars, and will also show whether their orbits are stable and protected by larger planets from cosmic bombardment.

New telescopes might find evidence of planets enshrouded in ozone and oxygen, which in sufficient concentrations imply the existence of life.

Our detection methods and optics and interpretation of spectra get better all of the time.

A few decades ago, no one would have suspected that we would have identified one exoplanet, let alone 333, simply by observing a stars "wobble." But it makes sense. That's pretty much the same method we used to find Uranus and Neptune. We observed perturbations in the known (nearby) planets' orbits, and were able to find the planets "Tugging" on them, which is essentially the same thing that is causing the wobbles of the stars... a gravitational "tug."

Pretty much all of our exoplanet studies are done indirectly. I think I have heard that a few have actually been imaged, but for the most part, everything we currently know about the ones we have discovered is from indirect analysis of data. (I.E. when a planet transits its star, we can observe the difference in the spectra from the star, and determine which elements are present in the planet.)

I've also recently been informed about "finding developing solar systems" (great article, if you can find a copy of the February 2009 issue of Astronomy magazine, it's a good read.)

Terrestrial planets are going to be hard to find, simply because, so far as we know... they are much less massive and much less voluminous in comparison to the "hot-jupiters" and other massive exoplanets we have been finding.

Nonetheless, technology, and accurate interpretation of observational data increases in this field rather quickly, this is certainly a topic of interest and it is growing in valid detection techniques.

Have you read up on the Humble Space Telescope (yes I spelled that right, I am not referring to Hubble)? MOST (those Canadians are awesome!)? I think that one is the project you would be *most* (hahahaha, yes, pun intended) interested in.

How Do Telescopes Work - Telescope Construction at Home

There are telescopes of several brands that are freely available in the market. However, even for one who wants to construct his telescope at home, there are several viable options.

One way to go about constructing a telescope is to buy each individual component and then assemble the whole structure. The required elements are mirrors, concave and convex lenses, the housing structure, brackets, and some other components. These can all be bought at local shops or in online stores. A comprehensive list of required elements can be downloaded from websites that serve as guides for amateurs looking to build their own telescopes. Books dedicated to this subject are available.

An enthusiast may also want to construct each element by hand at home, though that is an extremely time-consuming process and not the usual home method. It is a cumbersome process to create the housing compartment and arranging each element inside it. If one wants to follow this method, then one must be prepared to face several hurdles in the construction process.

Another method is to make use of telescope kits, which are available in the markets. These kits contain all the required elements and include instruction manuals to guide amateurs working at home. Using kit elements and assembling the instrument is considered a better method than constructing a telescope from individual elements bought separately. Telescope kits are cheaper and far less time-consuming than other methods of telescope construction. They save time spent on searching for each required component. Step-by-step instructions make it possible to work faster, making fewer mistakes along the way. These kits are intended for amateurs, and first-timers not yet experienced in making telescopes. A professional astronomer or one who aims to become a professional may however choose to work from scratch.

The point of consideration now is whether homemade telescopes are better than readymade instruments available otherwise. The simple answer to such a question is that both are almost the same with respect to quality. A homemade instrument displays the same characteristics as a readymade one of the same specification. A telescope made at home will have the same magnification factor, and is simpler to use in comparison to one bought in a shop. In fact, it is not complex at all and is similar to the ones built by early astronomers like Galileo.

The construction of telescopes at home, in truth, is often a joy, and a hobby that many enjoy. Several people consider it akin to an art, and have dedicated themselves to creating perfect instruments at home. Several sites online are a medium for proud astronomers to display their homemade telescopes. There are also web pages in existence that are dedicated guides for amateurs who want to create their own telescopes. Such pages give comprehensive lists of the elements required for its construction as well.

As with any other task, exhaustive research is required before setting out to make a telescope. It is imperative that the builder understands how each element performs individually and how it affects the whole. It also advisable to have storage space for the material required in construction of a telescope. However, despite all the effort that goes into construction of a homemade instrument, the results are reward enough.

Can anyone help me to choose telescope???

With limited budget in my hand, I want to buy telescope for my girl friend. I have come down to two telescopes - Celestron 127mm powerseeker (reflecting) & celestron astromaster 70AZ (refrecting) . They comes in almost same prize and fits in my budget. Can anyone suggest me better telescope among these two? Thanks a lot.

There are several different kinds of telescopes and all of them have some excellent features. Refractors and Reflectors, plus Schmidt-Cassegrain, APO refractors and more. There are also several mounts to chose from and the mounts are just as important as the scope is. All of the different scopes and mounts have some features that some people like and do not like. There is no one scope that is "better" than another except for the junk scopes out there which are just a waste of money.

Never, ever buy from Walmart, Coatco, Target, or any other discount store like that. Junk scopes are flooded into the market from those stores. You will be buying nothing but bad optics and plastic.

Orion is the very best for value and for customer service too. I have 2 of their scopes and I will only buy from them from now on.

The Orion site has some excellent diagrams and explanations of all types of scopes and mounts.

Things to consider are size--can the user lift and transport the scope to the viewing site easily? If not, then it will gather dust in a closet. Can the viewer reach all the knobs and buttons? I have a long tube large manual refractor and it is very dificult for me to reach the knobs when I am pointed to Zenith. I am not a tall person.

Take your time in making your decision.

I would like to suggest that you join a local astronomy club or astronomical society BEFORE you spend your money on a scope. There are many different kinds of scopes and what is perfect for one person is not perfect for another. Everyone has their own set of eyeballs and no two are the same. If you join a club, you can attend a few of their star parties and try out members scopes to see what works best for YOU, before you buy a scope. The members can also help you when you get your scope and show you how to get the most out of your new scope as well as to help teach you where the treasures in the sky are located. Hint: they will be especially helpful if you take cookies to star parties.

Some people will suggest that you purchase binnoculars. Not a bad idea but dont buy anything less than 10x50 and you must have a tripod too or you will not be happy with your astronomical views because they will be too shakey from your movements. Personally, I prefer a scope to binos.

But when you buy go Orion and you wont be disappointed.

Info on Astronomy

Articles on astronomy can be found both online and in print magazines. New photos of space objects result in articles. New space missions result in articles. There is a constant stream of conversation

Something as simple as bumpy space dust generated a great deal of interest and a lot of the recent astronomy articles. Why so much interest? Scientists have long known that hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe. But hydrogen has to bond to form the larger molecules observed in the universe. Because of the cold in space, hydrogen needs a little push. Scientists now realize that bumpy molecules may fit that bill. Nobody thinks of dust being bumpy when they vacuum.

One of Saturn's moons is known as the Death Star. With its huge crater, it resembles the famous movie prop. Recent astronomy articles focused on Cassini's mission to this moon, called Mimas. Some stunning images and a lot of new data resulted. It was a popular story. This information will help shed light on the number of impact objects that pass through Saturn's orbit. We'll learn a lot about how planets like Saturn clean debris from the solar system.

For years people have studied dark matter. It contributes to the expansion of the universe, but scientists don't really know how. Dark matter was a popular headline in recent astronomy articles. There was a plan to study distant supernovae to learn about dark matter. It's important because about 70% of the stuff in the universe is dark matter.

Before our sun was really a star it was a condensing mass of space matter called a protosun. Emissions of heat and light as well as solar winds from this proto-sun have long been a matter of contention. Recent astronomy articles answer this question with a resounding yes. Scientists have used new techniques to discover that the protosun did indeed emit ultraviolet and other particles in an early form of the solar wind. So the sun helped create life before it ever became a sun.

The Internet is a great source for learning about articles on astronomy.

POWER & RESPONSIBILITY

TENZIN GYATSO, 14TH DALAI LAMA –“I believe violence will only increase the cycle of violence.”

TENZIN GYATSO, THE DALAI LAMA –“Spend some time alone every day. Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer. Share your knowledge. It's a way to achieve immortality.”

TERENCE- “As each one wishes his children to be no they are.”

TERENCE –“You will have words for your punishment, but for me there will be blows.”

TERRY PRATCHETT –“Light thinks it travels faster than any thing but it is wrong. No matter how fast light travels, it finds the darkness has always got there first, and is waiting for it.”

TERRY PRATCHETT –“Most gods throw dice, but Fate plays chess, and you don't find out till too late that he's been playing with two queens all along.”

TERRY WAITE –“The terrible thing about terrorism is that ultimately it destroys those who practice it. Slowly but surely, as they try to extinguish life in others, the light within them dies.”

TEXAS GUINAN –“A politician is a fellow who will lay down your life for his country.”

TH HUXLEY –“The known is finite, the unknown infinite; intellectually we stand on an islet in the midst of an illimitable ocean of inexplicability. Our business in every generation is to reclaim a little more land.”

THACKERAY –“Mother is the name for God in the lips and hearts of little children.”

THACKEREY –“Next to the very young, I suppose the very old are the most selfish.”

THALES –“The most difficult thing in life is to know yourself.”

THALES- “The most universal thing is hope.”

THAOMAS HARDY- “As everybody knows, fine feathers make fine birds.”

THAYER –“As are families, so is society. If well ordered, well instructed, and well governed, they are the springs from which go forth the streams of national greatness and prosperity... of civil order and happiness.”

THE ART OF HAPPINESS –“The Dalai Lama replied: I think there are two kinds of desire. Certain desires are positive. A desire for happiness. It's absolutely right. The desire for peace... But at some point, desires can become unreasonable. That usually leads to trouble... Self-satisfaction alone cannot determine if a desire or action is positive or negative... I think excessive desire leads to greed... When you reflect upon the excesses of greed, you'll find that it leads an individual to a feeling of frustration, disappointment, a lot of confusion, and a lot of problems... Although the underlying motive is to seek satisfaction, the irony is that even after obtaining the object of your desire, you are still not satisfied. The true antidote of greed is contentment.”

THE ARTHASHASTRA –“It is difficult, though not impossible; to stop government officials from hiding their corrupt take.”

THE BEATLES –“And when the brokenhearted people living in the world agree, there will be an answer, let it be. For though they may be parted there is still a chance that they will see, there will be an answer. Let it be. Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be. Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.”

THE BERLIN DECLARATION –“For centuries Europe has been an idea, holding out hope of peace and understanding. That hope has been fulfilled.”

THE BLIDDKO –“What you are is what you have been, and what you will be is what you do now.”

THE BOOK OF DRUIDRY –“Grant, 0 God, Thy Protection; And in protection, strength; And in strength, understanding; And in understanding, knowledge; And in knowledge, the knowledge of justice; And in the knowledge of justice, the love of it; And in that love, the love of all existences; And in the love of all existences, the love of God. God and all goodness.”

THE BRAHMA VIHARCIS –“May all sentient beings have happiness and its causes, May all sentient beings be free of suffering and its causes, May all sentient beings never be separated from bliss , without suffering, May all sentient beings be in equanimity, free of bias, attachment and anger.”

THE CHRISTMAS ALPHABET –“C is for the candle sticks around the Christmas tree H is for the happiness with all the family P is for the reindeer dancing by the windowpane I is all the icing on the sweets, the cakes, the sugar cane S is for the stocking on the chimney wall T is for the toys beneath the tree so tall M is for the mistletoe where everyone kissed A is for the angels who up the Christinas-list S is for old Santa who brings everyone a gift.”

THE CLOUD OF UNKNOWING –“No man should be judged by others here in this life, for the good or evil deeds that they do. Nevertheless deeds may lawfully be judged, but not the men, whether they be good or evil.”

THE COLUMBIA ENCYCLOPEDIA –“According to Shankara, the ultimate reality is Brahman or the Self, which is pure reality, pure consciousness, and pure bliss. The world has come into be ing from Brahman and is wholly dependent on it. The criteria of reality are immutability and permanence. Since the world is constantly changing, and since its existence is not absolute but dependent on Brahman, the world is called illusion or maya. Brahman exists as the Absolute, without qualities (nirguna), and also exists with qualities (saguna) as a personal god, Ishvara, who presides over the world of appearance.”

THE COMPLETE ANGLER –“Look to your health; and if you have it, praise God, and value it next to a good conscience; for health is the second blessing that we mortals are capable of; a blessing that money cannot buy.”

THE CURE D'ARS –“Humility is to the virtues what the chain is to the rosary; remove the chain, and all the beads escape; take away humility, and all the virtues disappear.”

THE DHAMMAPADA –“Conquer the angry man by love. Conquer the ill-natured man by goodness. Conquer the miser with-generosity. Conquer the liar with truth.”

THE DHAMMAPADA –“One is one’s own destiny. Therefore one should train oneself.”

THE ECONOMIST –“Confronted by Asia's technological rise and the financial crisis, corporate America is losing its self-confidence. It should not.”

THE ECONOMIST –“Modest proposals are better than grand designs: They serve the political function of registering concerns, but are too small to provoke opposition.”

THE GOLDEN AGE OF ZEN –“Spring has its hundred flowers,/ Autumn its moon,/ Summer has its cooling breezes,/ Winter its snow./ If you allow no idle concerns/ To weight on your heart,/ Your whole life will be one/ Perennial good season.”

THE GOSPEL –“Jesus said: Whoever knows the All but fails to know himself lacks everything.”

THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW –“Then Peter began to call down curses on himself and he swore to them, don't know the Man!"

THE GOSPEL, STTHOMAS –“Raise the stone and there thou shall find me. Cleave the wood and there am I.”

THE HITOPADESA –“The spirit in thee is a river. Its sacred bathing place is contemplation; its waters are truth; its banks are holiness; its waves are love. Go to that river for purification; thy soul cannot be made pure by mere water.”

THE HOLY BIBLE –“Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God give the thee.”

THE IMITATION OF CHRISTY –“Some there are who resign themselves, but with exceptions: for they put not their whole trust in God, therefore they study how to provide for themselves.”

THE INTERVAL –“When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be.”

THE KINKS –“Girls will be boys and boys will be girls/It's a mixed up muddled up shook up world.”

THE LORD'S PRAYER –“Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”

THE MOTHER –“Nothing, not even the darkest falsehood can stop the ultimate triumph of truth.... To stand for the truth in all circumstances, to declare it if necessary in the teeth of the worst opposition and to be ready to do all you can for its sake, is the definition of heroism.”

THE MOTHER, PONDICHERRY –“Never grumble. All sorts of forces enter you when you grumble and they pull you down. We find in others what is in us... If we always find mud around us, it proves that there is mud somewhere in us.”

THE MYSTERY PLAY –“God is in the details, after all. Or... perhaps, the details are in God.”

THE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHY –“A work in progress, the Earth still shakes with the forces of creation. Earthquakes occur when shifting pieces of the surface overcome friction at their edges and cause the ground to shudder — with sometimes disastrous results.”

THE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHY –“Seen from the safe distance of a satellite, it can be a thrilling spectacle. But as anyone caught in the middle of a hurricane knows, the place that poets call Mother Earth is not always such a gentle parent. Extreme weather events... are expressions of a living planet, still changing after billions of years of existence.”

THE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHY –“When they occur at sea, earthquakes can generate seismic waves called tsunamis, which travel great distances at speeds equalling those of commercial jetliners. Tsunamis are barely noticeable —often just ripples on the surface — until they approach shores, when they become monsters.”

THE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHY –“Wildfire — an ancient lord of the wilderness — can create life as well as destroy it. Destructive outbreaks in recent years due to changing climate and human activities have revived controversies over how best to manage forests.”

THE PANCHATANTRA –“Inspect a matter with utmost care before jumping to conclusions and rushing headlong into actions; else, bitter remorse is let loose.”

THE PANCHATANTRA –“When enterprise is a man's second nature, Mount Meru is not too lofty, The Abyss not too low, nor the Great Ocean impassable. Perseverance, not wishes, gets work done; deer do not walk into the mouth of a sleeping lion.”

Bushnell Range Finders: From An Award Winning American Company

Bushnell Range finders are well known amongst the golfing and hunting set where accuracy and ease of use in the outdoors are prime considerations.

Bushnell Outdoor Products is an American company that has been around since late 1947, when David P. Bushnell founded it while spending time in allied occupied Japan. Originally, Bushnell outdoor products was more or less a mail order binocular company, but it has grown into a company with eleven brands and over fifteen product lines. These products include telescopes, night vision items, ski goggles, sunglasses, spotting scopes and much much more, that distributes in over 27 countries.

In the last decade the company has changed hands several times but still maintains it's high quality of outdoor optical equipment. So much so that awards of quality are no stranger to this all American conglomerate. Outdoor Life magazine bestowed the Editors choice award in 2007 for the Bushnell Elite 4200 rifle scope and another for the Browning Sports optics binoculars, which followed the one they were awarded for the Legend binoculars in 2006.

The first GPS systems to allow satellite imagery to be integrated into the display was created by Bushnell in 2006, as well as adding XM radio for real time weather information. Field and Stream Magazine awarded Bushnell the 'Best of the Best' award in 2007 for the Onix 400 GPS.

It's no wonder that with such a pedigree, Bushnell Range finders are considered to be at the forefront of their product range. Golfers and hunters know when they see something that works!

The Bushnell Yardage Pro is one such Range finder and it comes in a variety of editions. There is the Yardage Pro Golf Pinseeker 1500 with slope calculation, there is the Yardage Pro sport 450 which is also available in two types of camouflage coverings, the Yardage Pro 800, the Yardage Pro Legend which is also waterproof, the Yardage Pro Scout, the Yardage Pro 1000, the Yardage Pro 1600 which is waterproof and fog proof and the Yardage Pro Elite which comes multi-coated, water proof and/or with a camouflage finish. So there are a number to choose from but the cream of the crop for a golfer is the Pinseeker.

This uses laser technology to bounce a beam from an object and then measure the time it takes to return. This timing is then translated into yards or meters as required. Of course the more reflective the target the more accurate the reading although the 'bounced' laser takes less than a second to travel back and forth. The Pinseeker measures ranges from 5 to 1500 yards and at the longest distance is reputedly within an accuracy of +/- one yard. It has a monocular with seven times magnification so you can accurately aim your range finder even in very low light conditions, say at dusk.

It weighs only 10 ounces and fits easily into your pocket and comes with a variety of modes that let you ignore brush or tree branches and take aim at the very base of the pin: at the cup itself! Oh yes, it also measures slope, by degrees of angle, while taking into consideration the golf balls trajectory and the type of club that is being used....yes really!

Waterproof, easy to use, small enough to carry and very accurate. Anyone I have talked to has said it has managed to improve their golf game considerably.

The Bushnell Yardage Pro Pinseeker 1500 with slope calculation...worth looking into.

How to Align Celestron 5 SE telescope?

Hi,
I've celestron NexStar 5 SE telescope. Whats the easiest way to align? are we supposed to get it aligned through the software celestron has provided or it has to be done manually using the remote control.
I've tried the second option but its very tedious to properly align the objects other than moon even when using the finder scope. Some guidance needed here to find out where am I going wrong. Thanks.

You use the handset according to the instructions. I strongly suggest that you read through the procedure twice, then go through it three times in your living room during daylight hours. Do not attempt it during your first use in the dark. It won't matter that you can't centre any objects when you do this during the day; all you're doing is getting used to the commands and buttons.

From what I've read (not knowing the Celestron system), you have to first input your city, etc. and probably only have to do this once, unless you use it more than a couple hundred kilometres from your normal site. Then the time, and whatever else you're asked for.

Ensure that the finder is aligned to the scope by centring an object in the scope, then adjusting the finder until it's centred there. Keep looking in the scope to ensure the object is centred as you fiddle the finder.

The procedure you should use is Sky Align. Use the direction buttons to find a bright star (or planet). Centre it on the red dot in the finder and press Enter. Then, centre it in the eyepiece of the scope as closely as possible and press Align.

Do this for 2 other bright objects. When it says it's successful, press Enter.

It's like using a new mobile phone. You think you'll never get it, but a few uses and you do it blindfolded. Later, you'll know some stars and be able to use the other methods which are quicker.

In case you don''t have it, the manual is on the link below. The align procedure is on p. 11.
