I want to buy a CCD camera for my LX200 telescope. What is more, the Meade DSI II color or monochrome?

I have curious if there is an advantage to get the Meade DSI Monochrome II with 3-color filters rather than just getting the Meade DSI II color imager. I would think that it is much easier using only the color toner. What advantage is there to do it the hard way. (From the hard way would be instead of taking a shot of color with the color camera DSI II, which would have three shots - one with the red filter, one with the blue filter and a green filter overlap and then you would with the software to image RGB full color). Looks more like a lot of work - do you get anythign done that?

A monochrome camera provides greater flexibility. For example, many high-quality images are shot in LRGB (L is the luminosity). Essentially you use a particular filter is good for a specific object, such as OIII filter and shoot an object of luminosity (brightness). You can then shoot the colors (RGB) filters and combine them with the brightness of the image for a very good image. There are also plenty of other reasons to go with a CCD black and white I read in the past but can not remember the details, so I'll avoid talking things I'm not an expert.

What telescope Meade ETX-90EC buy or DS-2114?

I am a beginner in regard to astronomy. I just want to buy a decent telescope are not exceeded too quickly and I can see some relatively clear and some planets of distant objects as some nebulae, etc. At this point someone is locally selling a DS-2114 for $ 125 (with tripod and Autostar) and another person is selling an ETX-90EC, with lots of extra junk (tripod, Autostar and some filters and lenses) $ 500 just based on my initial search, the ETX seems like a much better telescope, but is capable of much more than the DS-2114? I have the money anyway, but it is the ETX-90EX value for money? Thanks for your detailed response B! I found a local group (nefas.org) and is having a deep sky see tomorrow evening in the Osceola National Forest!

★ I'd suggest you join a local astronomy club or astronomical society Before you spend your money in a real telescope. There are many different types of scopes and what is perfect for one person to another is not perfect. Each has its own set of eyeballs and no two are the themselves. If you join a club, you can attend some of the parts of its star members and test ranges to see what works best for you, before buying a scope application. Members can also help you when you get your scope and show you how to make the most of your new scope, and to help teach where the treasures are in heaven. Most clubs have borrowed areas and extensive libraries that you can get more information too. Most clubs have monthly membership meetings with informative presentations given by members and guest speakers. You really can learn a lot from these clubs and a plus is all the great friends I made there. Go to this site to find a club in your area. http://www.astroleague.org/societies/list This has only clubs that belong to the Astronomical League, so there are many more not listed here. Continue to search Google if one is not in your area here. Perhaps look at this site: ★ http://www.astronomyclubs.com/ are not different types of telescopes and they all have some excellent features. Refractors and reflectors, plus Schmidt-Cassegrain, APO refractor, Mac-Cass, and many more. There are also several mounts and mounts to choose are as important, if not more importantly, the scope is. All carriers have different areas and some features that some people like and dislike. ★ No two eyes are themselves and the ideal for one person may be completely wrong for someone else. ★ There is no area that is "better" than another, except for all the areas of garbage out there that are just a waste of money. Never, never buy at Walmart, Costco, Target, or any discount store like that. unwanted areas are flooded into stores. You're buying nothing but bad optics and plastic. You must buy from a reputable manufacturer or distributor or store telescope telescope telescope. If you do not specialize in telescopes, look elsewhere. ★ This is a new article in Sky and Telescope that will tell you about some types of telescopes and how to choose your first telescope. ★ http://www.skyandtelescope.com/equipment/basics/12511616.html If you are new to this, then stay away from anything used from anywhere. If you do not know what you're buying and that you are buying will most likely be receiving any other pain --- head without warranty either. Some great deals on used equipment out there, by people who know how to use and care of the fields, but if you do not know what you're doing, you may spend much money on worthless junk. Improper cleaning can destroy a scope. Buyer beware. ★ I recommend: http://oriontelescopes.com/ Orion is the best for value and customer service as well. I have 3 of their scopes and I will only buy from them from now. My first scope is a scope manual control and I am very happy that it was because it forced me to learn where things are in the night sky. Go-To write areas can be frustrating to use. If you do not have them lined up exactly perfect, are not targets. If you are a beginner, you will be frustrated unless the spring for a GPS Go-To. An object locator is just that --- will locate objects for you (must be ranked first), but an object locator is not a motor monitoring. You will not have the scope of the goal. The Orion site has some excellent diagrams and explanations of all kinds of fields and media. ★ things to consider are size - the user can lift and carry the scope on the display page easily? Does it fit in your car? If not, that will gather dust in a closet. I recommend a carrying case too what is protected in storage and transport. Can the viewer reach all the controls and buttons? I have a long tube refractor operating large and very difficult for me to reach the knobs when I said Zenith. I'm not a tall person. ★ Some people try to suggest you get Binnoculars instead of a telescope. That's not a bad idea, but at least we need 10x50 size and have a tripod for viewing astronomical. Even the pulse will shake. My personal preference is a telescope because Binnoculars must be properly aligned at the factory. If not, you see double or triple vision of everything that makes them useless for astronomy. They can easily be beaten out of the lineup too, so be very care. ★ Take in making its decision. ★ time not try to learn everything at once or you will be overwhelmed and discouraged. Patience is the key to astronomy. ★ You need a good star chart program as well. http://www.stellarium.org/ This is a free download. Tell him where you are and tell you what see. I wish you well:. Edit want to give some words of advice on Meade. Meade was once a great company and sold the precision optical equipment. Have had some financial problems in recent years and granted, they are trying to solve, but at the expense of customer service. Virtually no service post-market customers over Meade. If you receive a perfect product you are fine, but if you need any help after the sale, you get nothing. They do not offer spare parts or help if you need repairs for equipment used is usually Meade purchase a headache because you can not fix what is wrong. It seems be a good deal compared to new prices, but it's usually because something is wrong and can not be fixed. Many people are trying to get rid of Meade greater things because they know that when it breaks, not receiving aid. I can not recommend anything from Meade for this reason. You'll do much better to go with Orion. They will help with anything and no customer service better anywhere.

Description

The ETX70AT is my favorite of all the low-cost computerized telescopes, because of its compact body and also because it is so easy to use. The ETX70AT package includes everything a beginner needs to get started (except batteries). So what can you see, exactly, with this little telescope? It will show you craters on the Moon, the rings of Saturn and the moons of Jupiter. Take it with you to dark country skies and the little ETX70AT will even show you galaxies and reveal the Milky Way as a brilliant river of stars. I found the low power views with the included MA25mm eyepiece, about 14X magnification, to be sharper from edge to edge than my 15X70 binoculars. Wide-field, low-power views allow you to take in the full picture of bright star clusters like the Pleiades. The Pleiades are known as the Seven Sisters because sharp eyed people can often see seven or eight stars with the naked eye, and though I've only ever been able to make out six, with the ETX70 on a good clear night, I counted 77 stars! The low power view of a rising moon, one day past full, was simply beautiful--the lunar rays splashed out of the major impact crater Tycho sharply etched against the Maria (the lunar seas). Higher magnification with the MA9mm eyepiece did begin to reveal the optical defects that short focus achromatic refractors always show. The moon was rimmed by a bright green glow, and the craters were no longer quite as sharp. When I turned my gaze to Saturn, I could plainly see the rings and Saturn's moon Titan, using either the MA9mm (39X) or my own SP6.4mm eyepiece (55X), but the image was not as sharp as it would have been in a classic style long focus refractor. The Autostar controller makes it easy to find more than 1400 celestial objects. The Autostar computer included with the ETX70AT is simply amazing. Plug in the Autostar and the batteries, point the tube North and level, and the Autostar's easy alignment routine will pick two alignment stars and help you find them. You will still need a guide book, like Nightwatch by Terrence Dickinson, to introduce you to the bright stars by name, but this is about the only detail Meade left out of the ETX70AT package. Take Autostar's guided tour of "tonight's best," and you'll soon be looking at galaxies and star clusters. Yes, you really can see galaxies with a little telescope like this. All you need are dark skies and knowing where to look. And Autostar takes care of the "knowing where to look" part. Once the telescope is aligned, bring up M31 on the menu and press "GO TO." You'll find yourself looking at the Andromeda Galaxy, two million light years away. Even from a dark location in the country you'll see why amateur astronomers refer to galaxies as "faint fuzzies." This view of faint and fuzzy galaxies is very much the way they looked to comet hunter Charles Messier who first discovered these so called "M" objects. A surprising number of people with bigger telescopes also own one of these little ETX refractors. There's no doubt about it, a compact, computerized telescope that actually finds things for you is just plain cool. --Jeff Phillips Pros: It's easy to find objects with the Autostar computer Wide field views Cons: Planet views could be better

Let Meade high-resolution optics and revolutionary Autostar capability take you on an automated guided tour of the Solar System, the Galaxy, and beyond. Now even the most novice amateur astronomer can locate and explore the planets, galaxies, and nebulae, as well as star clusters, asteroids, and comets, all at the push of a button. The Meade ETX-70AT Astro Telescope brings the full range of celestial images to your eye with astonishing levels of clarity, resolution, and definition. Refractors This is a refractor telescope. Refractors (also known as a dioptrics) capture light with a lens at the front of a long tube and send it to an eyepiece at the other end. They look, in other words, just like what most people think of when they hear the word "telescope." Refractors offer--potentially, at least--the cleanest images of any telescope design. They are simple and reliable (the sealed tube is maintenance-free), and are good for both celestial and terrestrial viewing. Read more about different telescope designs in our buying guide All of the major planets except Pluto are easily observable through the ETX-70AT. Study Saturn and its ring system; the primary cloud belts of Jupiter as well as its four major satellites; the Moonlike phases of Mercury and Venus; prominent features on Mars; the starlike images of the distant planets Uranus and Neptune. The Moon stands out in stark, almost three-dimensional detail - craters, mountain ranges, and fault lines. In our galaxy the telescope displays hundreds of nebulae, star clusters, double and multiple stars, and variable stars - plus dozens of external galaxies in all their variations of form and structure. Terrestrial Observing The Meade ETX-70AT also makes an excellent land-view instrument for the birdwatcher, the naturalist, or for the home with a view. Image quality and resolution typically far exceed levels normally expected of terrestrial telescopes. Terrestrial observers quickly appreciate the advantages afforded by the Autostar hand controller. Using Autostar, many land objects can be readily followed, or tracked, from a distance, using one of nine selectable speeds. Optical System The ETX-70AT includes a multi-coated, achromatic objective lens of exclusive Meade design and manufactured of Grade-A crown and flint optical glass components. The lens yields razor-sharp images of astronomical and terrestrial subjects. In the optical design of ETX-70AT, light enters from the right through a 2-element objective lens and travels to a focus at the focal plane. Field stops internal to the optical tube prevent off-axis light from reaching the focal plane, thereby enhancing image contrast. The Autostar Hand Controller makes it easy The included Autostar controller permits the automatic location of over 1400 celestial objects: Solar System Planets 8 Moon 1 Asteroids 26 Comets 15 Constellation 88 Deep-Sky Named Objects 66 Galaxies 74 Diffuse Nebulae 31 Planetary Nebulae 19 Quasars 11 Caldwell Objects 109 Messier Objects 110 Stars Named Stars 79 Double Stars 395 Variable Stars 189 SAO Stars 200 Earth Satellites 50 Autostar Hand Controller For all of their advanced imaging capabilities, portability, ease of use, and contemporary cosmetic design, Meade ETX telescopes are above all uniquely defined by the revolutionary Autostar hand controller. It's easy to use: just enter the object you wish to observe on to the Autostar display, press GO TO, and watch as the telescope moves rapidly in seconds to place the object in the telescope's field of view. One observing session validates the prediction made by Sky & Telescope that "The ETX/Autostar concept will go down as the greatest happening in amateur astronomy yet." Objects stored in the Autostar's database include the entire range of celestial phenomena and are designed to keep the active observer busy for many a starlit evening. The above database listing has been specifically chosen as suitable for observing with the ETX-70AT and provides an excellent introduction to the diversity of astronomical objects visible through the telescope. In addition to its object-locating capabilities Autostar permits pushbutton centering of objects within the telescopic field at any of nine selectable speeds. Once Autostar locates an object, it directs the telescope automatically to track the object across the sky, compensating fully and precisely for the effects of the Earth's axial rotation. Ultraportable Easy to carry to any observing location, whether a distant mountaintop or your own back yard, the Meade ETX-70AT telescope brings the excitement of astronomy to users of any age. Just place the telescope on any flat surface (or use the standard-equipment field tripod), do a quick, easy alignment of the telescope's computer to the sky, and start observing. Six internal (user-supplied) AA-batteries power the ETX-70AT for about 20 hours. Features 1. Eyepiece 2. Eyepiece Holder Thumbscrew - Tightens the eyepiece in place. 3. 90° Eyepiece Holder - Holds the eyepiece upright for easy viewing. 4. Optical Tube - The main optical component that gathers the light from distant objects and brings this light to a focus for examination with the eyepiece. 5. Movable Objective Lens Cell - This component contains the telescope's lenses. The focus knob moves the cell for precise image focus. 6. Vertical Lock - Controls the manual vertical movement of the telescope. Turning the vertical lock counterclockwise unlocks the telescope enabling it to be freely rotated by hand about the vertical axis. Turning the vertical lock clockwise (to a "firm feel" only) prevents the telescope from being moved manually, but engages the vertical motor drive for Autostar operation. 7. Fork Arms - Hold the optical tube in place. 8. Focus Knob - Moves the telescope's objective lens (5, Fig. 1) in a finely-controlled motion to achieve precise image focus. The ETX-60AT and ETX-70AT telescopes can be focused on objects from a distance of about 17 ft. to infinity. Rotate the focus knob clockwise to focus on distant objects, and counterclockwise to focus on nearby objects. 9. Horizontal Lock - Controls the manual horizontal rotation of the telescope. Turning the horizontal lock counterclockwise unlocks the telescope, enabling it to be freely rotated by hand about the horizontal axis. Turning the horizontal lock clockwise prevents the telescope from being rotated manually, but engages the horizontal motor drive for Autostar operation. 10. Computer Control Panel A. Handbox (HBX) Port for the Autostar coil cord. B. LED - The red power indicator light illuminates when power is supplied to the Autostar handbox and to the telescope's motor drive. C. ON/OFF Switch - Turns the Computer Control Panel and Autostar ON or OFF. D. Auxiliary (AUX) Port - Provides connection for current and future Meade accessories, such as the Meade AstroFinder Software with Cable Connector Kit, which allows you to control your ETX from a PC. 11. Base Housing - Supports the telescope for placement on a flat, level surface, such as a tabletop or optional tripod. 12. Holes for Optional Tripod (not shown, on the bottom plate). 13. Right Ascension (R.A.) Setting Circle. 14. and 15. Cellback containing Flip-Mirror and Flip-Mirror Control Knob - ETX telescopes include an internal mirror. 16. Photo Port - Attach any 35mm camera with a removable lens to this port using an optional #64ST T-Adapter or attach the #933 Erecting Prism for correctly oriented images through the eyepiece. 17. Declination (Dec) Setting Circle (on left fork arm). 18. Autostar with attached coil cord. 19. Dust Cap. 20. Battery Compartment.

Kendrick Dew Cap for the Meade ETX 90 mm Telescope Kendrick Dew Cap for the Meade ETX 90 mm Telescope

Sale Price: $24.95

Description

Kendrick dewcaps are constructed of black ABS plastic and are all felt lined for maximum absorption of moisture and baffling of stray light. The cap is attached by wrapping it around your telescope just below the corrector plate ring. The two outside ends are then attached to one another using the sewn on Velcro. A rubber strip is supplied that must be attached along the bottom of the dewcap where there is no felt. This helps in providing a friction fit that ensures the dewcap stays in place once attached. It also allows enough room to attach Kendrick heaters around the corrector plate ring on the inside of the dewcap. Dewcaps will not prevent dew from forming on your telescope. They only delay it, typically by 20 to 40 minutes after dew point has been reached. A dewcap will provide greater contrast while observing by cutting down on the amount of stray light that enters the front of your telescope due to street lights, skyglow etc.

Description

Celestron's popular Ultima 80mm Zoom Spotting Scope offers images that are noticeably brighter and sharper than entry level 60mm spotters. The Ultima 80 is a refractor style spotting scope with an Achromatic objective lens. Excellent light transmission is assured by multi-layer anti-reflection coatings on the objective lens as well as on the zoom eyepiece and the BAK-4 prisms. The multi-coated 80mm objective lens delivers 77% brighter views than a 60mm scope, and the built in zoom lens produces sharp images from 20X all the way up to 60X magnification. The Ultima 80 features a sleek, waterproof design and includes a padded soft case with zippers on both ends so the scope can be protected even while mounted on a tripod. Including the eyepiece the Ultima 80 measures just over 19 inches long and weighs about 3.6 pounds. The rubber eyecup can be removed to expose a standard "T-thread" for attaching a camera. The "straight-thru" viewing configuration is easier to point at moving targets, and is particularly handy on a bench top or even a car window mount. The focus ranges from 27 feet to the horizon with just a few turns of the focus knob. When I fold down the rubber eye cup I can keep my glasses on and see the whole 2 degree field of view at 20X magnification. With my glasses on I need very little focus adjustment while I crank the zoom eyepiece from 20X up to 60X. Sometimes though I like to take my glasses off while observing because the view seems to have just a little more contrast and sharpness. I like the fact that the Ultima 80 gives me a sharp image either way. The drawback of the traditional crown and flint achromatic lens used in the Ultima 80 Zoom Spotting Scope is a bit of false color, also known as blue fringing or chromatic aberration. Blue fringing seems well controlled at 20X magnification, but it becomes increasingly noticeable as I zoom up to 60X. Celestron also offers the Ultima 80ED and the Regal 80 F-ED spotting scopes which use exotic ED glass lenses to virtually eliminate blue fringing and produce the sharpest possible high power views. Celestron's Ultima 80mm Zoom Spotting Scope combines sharp multicoated optics with a good quality zoom lens in a compact waterproof package. Top it off with a lifetime "No-Fault" warranty and the Celestron Ultima 80 is a terrific value. --Jeff Phillips Pros: Sharp multi-coated optics Good zoom eyepiece Waterproof design Lifetime no-fault warranty Cons: Blue fringing noticeable at high power Blue Heron at 50 yards shot at 20X Moon picture shot with 20X zoom Moon picture shot with 60X zoom Pelicans on an offshore rock shot at 20X Pelican in the air shot at 20X

The Celestron 52254 Ultima 80 20-60 x 80 straight spotting scope offers a step up in aperture from the 65 millimeter scope, offering 50 percent brighter images. With this scope, you'll have a great, all-around optical instrument, perfect for viewing nature or outdoor sporting activities. Featuring a sight tube for quick targeting, excellent multi-coated optics, a portable and durable refractor design, and an 20x to 60x zoom eyepiece, the Celestron 52254 is designed to provide you with great performance under a wide range of viewing situations. Telescope Objective Lens

An explanation of the resolving power of telescopes

Enlargement of a telescope is easy to understand. The greater the power closer look we get images in the night sky (are larger). Resolution is another critical component of the telescopes and is very easy to understand if think of it as television sets. Older televisions have a number of lines of resolution and new high definition sets have many more lines resolution so you can get a sharper picture and detailed. The same applies to the telescopes, the higher the resolution the more lines of information we get so the better the image. And this resolution has nothing to do with enlargement. If you approach your TV does not get sharper image? No. Just becomes larger. The resolution remains the same.

Factors affecting resolution

The wavelength of light is observed is a factor in the resolution. The higher the wavelength of light waves of a telescope to see what information gets more and better the resolution. A second factor is the size of the telescope objective. The bigger the lens or mirror the wavelengths will meet. And more lengths wave means a better resolution.

Formula for solving

This relationship between the wavelength of light and the diameter of the telescope objective gives us, along with a constant, a formula for calculating the resolution in arc seconds. Divide the diameter of the objective the telescope for the wavelength of light is observed, then multiply this by 252 000 (which is our constant). This gives the resolution in arc seconds. (Resolution = 252 000 X (wavelength) / (diameter)). You can see that the larger the telescope the smaller the resolution is in seconds of arc. And the lower resolution in arcseconds, the better. It's like little lines on your HDTV. Small lines means more lines per inch or centimeters and a drawer, the sharpest image.

Other factors in the resolution of the Telescope

The conditions weather is an important factor in the resolution. A turbulent atmosphere, thick, distorted or unstable wavelengths entering the telescope and distort the quality of light and information. This will reduce the resolving power.

The quality of the telescope is another factor. Areas of high quality with good optics properly gather good information and give you a good resolution. Poor quality of optical images are distorted and give a lower resolution.

Resolution, while less known that the increase is much more important. It is the factor that determines the quality and sharpness of what is seen through the telescope and is the reason why big telescopes are better than smaller ones.

About the Author

You can read a more comprehensive explanation of telescope resolution, with drawings, on the authors website : TelescopeNerd.com

Why is the objective of a telescope to be great?

Two reasons: 1) The larger the area of the lens, which will gather more light. Space is a function of the square of the aperture, so a goal of two inches in diameter accepted four times in the light of an objective of an inch in diameter. Its image is four times brighter. 2) The larger the lens opening, the higher the resolution, ie the lower the detail that can be resolved. A two-inch lens detail can solve half the size of which was resolved by a lens of an inch.

Description

This tried-and-true refractor goes the extra distance in introducing the novice to the wonders of the night sky. The Observer 70 features a 70mm fully anti-reflection coated achromatic objective lens, which provides 36% more light-gathering ability than a 60mm. Its 700mm focal length (f/10) will show you the stark beauty of the lunar surface, Saturn's rings, Jupiter's atmospheric belts, or the billowy clouds of the Orion Nebula. The included EQ-1 equatorial mount comes equipped with dual slow-motion controls for manual star tracking and adjustable aluminum tripod. Includes an EZ Finder II finder scope to help you zero in on your celestial targets, two eyepieces - 25mm (1.25") and 10mm (1.25") - and 90-deg star diagonal. One year limited warranty.

Orion’s Observer 70 EQ combines the solid optical performance of a classic achromatic refractor with a German style equatorial mount. The Observer 70 features very good optics and 36 percent more light gathering power than 60mm beginner scopes. The complete accessory package includes high and low power eyepieces, a 90 degree star diagonal, a red-dot finder, illustrated instructions, and Orion‘s Starry Night Special Edition astronomy software. The Observer 70 EQ features very good optical performance. Achromatic refractors have a two piece objective lens, the second lens element compensates for “chromatic aberration”, the false color or blue fringes seen in low cost telescopes. In daylight tests I see very little blue fringing with the standard equipment 10mm eyepiece (70X magnification), and none at all with the 25mm eyepiece (28X). Stars and planets show up very nicely with the Observer 70. The quadruple star in the Orion Nebula known as the Trapezium is cleanly split into four components with the 10mm eyepiece (70X magnification). When I combine the 10mm eyepiece with a 2X Barlow lens for 140X magnification, I’m treated to lovely views of Saturn’s rings and the little orange disk of Mars. My view of the Moon is delightfully crisp and clear; the 25mm eyepiece nicely frames the Lunar disk, and using the 10mm eyepiece I can easily see mountain peaks and terraced walls inside the crater Copernicus. The Observer 70 EQ also features an aluminum tripod and an EQ-1 equatorial mount. The equatorial mount is a little more complicated to balance and align than the Observer 70 AZ , but the reward is better slow motion control and tracking at magnifications over 100X. Simply point the equatorial axis at Polaris, the North Star, and the telescope tracks celestial objects by turning one slow motion knob. This makes it much easier to use a high power eyepiece while viewing the Moon and Planets. The “EZ Finder II” works by shining a red LED on a small window; just look through the window and line up the red spot with your target. This works OK for bright objects like the Moon and planets but not so well for finding galaxies and deep space objects. Orion’s Observer 70 EQ is simply a very good entry level telescope for a student or family. The good quality 70mm optics produce an image that is significantly sharper and brighter than 60mm beginner scopes, and the package includes a solid mount, two good eyepieces, and fully illustrated instructions. --Jeff Phillips Pros: Reliable refractor design Good views of the Moon and planets Complete accessory package Starry Night software included Cons: Finder only works for bright objects

Features

  • A great entry-level refractor telescope at a very affordable price
  • Reveals detailed views of the Moon and bright planets such as Jupiter and Saturn
  • 70mm (2.75") aperture and 700mm focal length provides great views of bright night-sky objects

Or do you have a job that involves night surveillance, search and rescue work or management of a large piece of property? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then look into something like the way night owl would be a step in the right direction. The reason is that you can greatly improve your vision at night. As its name indicates, is an instrument that can give you the ability to see when darkness falls, and like the owl.

Night owls are optical instruments sophisticated devices known as optical electronics that help them see at night by increased light. They differ from telescopes and binoculars that no objects extend located at a distance. There are different varieties of optics owl nearby. are, scopes, goggles, scopes and other night vision accessories. The monocular type of scope is the night owl optics base. There will be different types of lenses available to increase the power of the scope. This obviously improve the range of observation of the scope. Another useful feature of the lens as you can get adapters to attach camera the cameras and get pictures and videos of night vision. Night Owl binoculars are the easiest to use so it is recommended for first time users. If you buy one for the first and only intend to use for recreational purposes then a simple product will suffice. When using night owl optics the user must be careful not to use where there are a lot of bright lights and definitely should not be used during the day, as it can damage your eyes. These optical also have something called phosphor screens in them will remain in place from 1500-2500 hours. So if stiffening is used, then check and see how much time is left in them. Without it, the lens will not work.

Prices of optics night owl like any other HD devices technology can vary widely from one model to another. One of the economic models would be the monocular Noneexgen-W, which costs about $ 230. This will have a visual field 70 'at a distance of 200' to the field of infrared illumination. A typical example of a more expensive night owl optics monocular would EliteNGNM4X. This is a price of around 400 dollars and has a generation of technology and ambient light amplification of 500x powerful infrared illumination.

Description

Celestron and ;s SkyMaster Series of large aperture binoculars are a phenomenal value for high performance binoculars ideal for astronomical viewing or for terrestrial (land) use - especially over long distances. Each SkyMaster model features high quality BAK-4 prisms and multi-coated optics for enhanced contrast. Celestron has designed and engineered the larger SkyMaster models to meet the special demands of extended astronomical or terrestrial viewing sessions. The 15x70 version is one of the most popular models in the series. It offers serious large aperture light gathering in an affordable and reasonably lightweight configuration.

Binoculars come in a wide range of shapes and sizes these days, and an even wider range of prices. It's easy to spend less than $100 or more than $500 for what may appear to be, at least outwardly, comparable models. While they may look the same, they are probably quite different on the inside. Recently, the binocular market has seen a flood of giant binoculars at prices that were unheard of just a few years ago. In general, giant binoculars are defined as those that magnify the view 10 times or more and have 70-mm or larger front (objective) lenses. It used to be that the least expensive giant binoculars cost in excess of $150, even $200. All that changed not long ago, when the bottom fell out of the price cellar. Now, several companies import giant binoculars that sell for half that, or less. Celestron's 15x70 SkyMaster binoculars are one of the leaders in the low-price giant binocular arena. They certainly sound good on paper. The SkyMasters include multicoated optics and BaK-4 internal prisms, two features that promise brighter, better images, and key points to look for when judging a pair of binoculars. They also come with an adapter for attaching them to a photo tripod, which is a must to use them to their fullest, and a soft carrying case. But just because they are cheap doesn't always mean they are worth the price. Would it be better to save up for a more expensive pair? To find the answer, I had an opportunity recently to judge the SkyMasters against a pair of Fujinon 16x70 FMT-SX binoculars , one of the finest pairs of giant binoculars sold today. Like the SkyMasters, the Fujinons feature BaK-4 prisms, but also have fully multicoated optics. As a general rule, superior coatings mean superior image sharpness and contrast. But then, that should be expected, given that the Fujinons cost many times more than the Celestrons. While the Fujinons were clearly the better performer, the Celestron SkyMasters held up admirably. Image brightness, quality, and contrast were all remarkable considering their bargain price. Although images were a little soft across the outer 25% of the Celestron's field, the overall view was impressive nonetheless. Some inexpensive binoculars have very sloppy focusing, causing the eyepieces to tilt and shift. Not so with the SkyMasters. I found that their center-focusing mechanism worked smoothly, with no apparently backlash or wobble. Eye relief (the distance you hold your eyes away from the eyepieces to see the full field) is stated to be 18 mm, a good distance for higher power binoculars and an important consideration if you must wear glasses when viewing. The SkyMasters are also light enough to support by hand for short periods of time, although buyers would be well advised to mount them on a sturdy photo tripod. The bottom line is, if you are considering a pair of giant binoculars, whether for bird watching, stargazing, or another recreational use, and have a limited budget, Celestron's giant 15x70 SkyMasters represent an excellent value. --Phil Harrington, author of Star Ware and Star Watch Pros: Exceptional value for the price Light enough to support by hand BaK-4 prisms Multicoated optics Cons: Outer 25% of the field is soft and a little blurry Requires a tripod to use for extended periods

Features

  • Multi-coated optics
  • Large aperture perfect for low light conditions and stargazing
  • Tripod adapter
  • 13 mm (0.51 in) long eye relief ideal for eyeglass wearers

need a telescope part?

need the complete reflector lens for a Meade telescope "Polaris" model 60 EQ-D

Meade rarely sells separate lenses. You might do better to find a used scope on Astromart or Ebay and then cannibalize it for parts. Frankly a 60 probably isn't worth the effort.

The Steadicam Smoothee is specifically designed and engineered to work with your Apple iPhone 4. Based on the same technology as the big $60,000 rigs used in Hollywood, it allows iPhone 4 owners to capture incredible video without the shakes normally associated with hand-held video shot on the go, right out of the box, the very first time. The Steadicam Smoothee is small and agile enough to take on vacations or follow the action at sporting events. The Smoothee let's you "fly" wherever the scene takes you--up and down steps, indoors and outside, through crowds--almost anywhere, with precise, elegant control and ease. Its quick release mount lets you instantly swap camera connections between your Smoothee and any tripod. While designed for the Apple i-Phone 4, the patented quick release removable i-Phone mount also serves as a tabletop stand or can be mounted to any tripod with a standard ¼ x20" camera mount. The comfortable ergonomic hand-grip folds up securely when not in use. Also included with the Steadicam Smoothee is a quick guide DVD on how to get the best possible shots, along with a carrying strap. The lightweight, compact, agile, and easy to use Steadicam Smoothee features an innovative, patented design built around a durable mono-frame metal structure that requires no complicated instruction to use. With its "go anywhere" compact dimensions, the Steadicam Smoothee is approximately 8"W x 14.5" H x 2.5" D (20.3 x 36.8 x 6.4cm) in operating configuration.

Meade 20218 NG-70SM 70mm Altazimuth Refractor Telescope Meade's value priced NG-70SM Altazimuth Refractor is an affordable entry level telescope that features an easy to use Altazimuth mount with slow motion controls for precise tracking. The complete package includes a sturdy metal tripod, a red dot viewfinder, two 1.25 inch eyepieces and a star diagonal, and a software DVD with instructional video. The NG-70SM Refractor Telescope comes disassembled in a compact box, but the instructional DVD video guides you through all the steps required for assembly. Go ahead and try it out in the daytime, that's the best time to align the red-dot finder scope while looking at a distant tree or telephone pole. The optics of Meade's NG-70SM produce an image that is right side up but the diagonal mirror reverses the image left-to-right. That's no problem most of the time, but an optional correct image diagonal is available. The low power 25mm eyepiece produces a magnification 28X which is just right for spotting the Moon or the planets, while the 9mm eyepiece (78X magnification) can be used to zoom in for more detail. The MH25 eyepiece at 28X shows a lovely view of the Lunar disk in a dark sky, while the MH9 eyepiece at 78X shows literally hundreds of craters on the Moon and begins to show the rings of Saturn and the cloud bands of Jupiter. For even better views it's easy to add better eyepieces. My best view of Saturn, for example, came with an optional 6.4mm Super Plossl eyepiece, about 110X magnification. The Altazimuth mount included with Meade's NG-70SM is lighter and easier to use than an Equatorial mount, yet the slow motion knobs make it easy to keep objects in view. The rotation of the Earth causes the Moon or planets to appear to drift out of the eyepiece, but the slow motion knobs make it easy to keep the telescope on target, even with a high power eyepiece. The telescope is sensitive to vibration, however, so a high power eyepiece can be difficult to focus. Meade's NG-70SM is a good entry level telescope at a very good price. The optics are good, the Altazimuth mount is easy to assemble and easy to use, the instructional DVD includes a nice Lunar Atlas as well as planetarium software, and it's easy to add better eyepieces to improve your view of the planets. –Jeff Phillips Pros: Light and easy to use Altazimuth mount includes slow motion knobs Easy to add better eyepieces Instructional DVD included; Cons: MH eyepieces have narrow field of view Vibrates while focusing at high power

If you're looking for a dual-purpose telescope appropriate for both terrestrial and celestial viewing, then the AstroMaster Series is for you. Each AstroMaster model is capable of giving correct views of land and sky. The AstroMaster Series produce bright, clear images of the Moon and planets. It is easy to see the moons of Jupiter and the rings of Saturn with every one of these fine instruments. For views of the brighter deep space objects like galaxies and nebulae, we recommend the larger aperture and light gathering ability of the Newtonian reflectors.

Celestron’s AstroMaster 70 EQ combines the solid optical performance of a classic achromatic refractor with a German style equatorial mount. The Astromaster 70 features easy no-tool setup and much better optics than 60mm beginner scopes. The Astromaster package includes high and low power eyepieces, a correct image diagonal prism, illustrated instructions, and planetarium software for your PC. The AstroMaster 70 EQ features very good optical performance. Achromatic refractors have a two piece objective lens, the second lens element compensates for “chromatic aberration”, the false color or blue fringes seen in low cost telescopes. In daylight tests I see very little blue fringing with the standard equipment 10mm eyepiece (90X magnification), and none at all with the 20mm eyepiece (45X). Stars and planets show up very nicely with the AstroMaster 70. The bright double star Castor, one of the “twins” in the constellation Gemini, is cleanly split at 90X with the 10mm eyepiece. When I tried an optional 6mm Plossl eyepiece for a magnification of 150X, I was treated to lovely views of Saturn’s rings and the little orange disk of Mars. My view of the Moon was delightfully crisp and clear; the 20mm eyepiece nicely frames the Lunar disk, and using the 10mm eyepiece I could easily see mountain peaks and terraced walls inside the crater Copernicus. The AstroMaster 70 EQ also features a newly designed tripod with 1.25 inch stainless steel legs. This new tripod holds the telescope firmly; I had no trouble focusing even with a high power eyepiece. The equatorial mount is a little more complicated to balance and align than the AstroMaster 70 AZ , but the reward is better slow motion control and tracking at magnifications over 100X. Simply point the equatorial axis at Polaris, the North Star, and the telescope tracks celestial objects by turning one slow motion knob. This makes it much easier to use a high power eyepiece while viewing the Moon and Planets. The “star pointer” finder scope works by shining a red LED on a plastic window; just look through the window and line up the red spot with your target. This works OK for bright objects like the Moon and planets but not so well for finding galaxies and deep space objects. The AstroMaster 70 EQ is a very good entry level telescope for a student or family. The good quality 70mm optics produce an image that is significantly sharper and brighter than 60mm beginner scopes, and the AstroMaster 70 EQ includes a solid mount, two good eyepieces, and fully illustrated instructions. --Jeff Phillips Pros: Reliable refractor design Good views of the Moon and planets Complete accessory package Simple no tool setup Cons: Star-pointer not so easy to use

How Do Telescopes Work - Telescope Lenses

Lenses and mirrors are the elements used to collect and view focused light in telescopes. Mirrors are the medium for focusing in reflector telescopes, while lenses are the medium in refractors. Each type has its own distinct advantages and disadvantages. Refractor type telescopes use lenses. These lenses bend the light when it enters the telescope from the distant object being viewed through it. Because of this refraction it is possible to closely view a distant object. The telescope has two lenses, with one slightly larger.

The eyepiece in the telescope is generally a small lens. Some telescope however, may not use lenses for the eyepiece at all. The eyepiece, in any case, is the most important element of a telescope. It is the element which lets you see correctly whatever it is that you want to focus on. These eyepieces are adjustable and are of a low power. Adjusting the eyepiece allows you to change the magnification factor. What kind of lens you use for the eyepiece is a personal choice. In today’s age, several different kinds of eyepieces are available in the market. Because of this motley available, choosing the correct eyepiece fro your requirement may be a difficult task. As a result, you should concentrate on defining the criteria you think are important for your choice. The depth of field, optical quality, sharpness, clarity, brightness, market price, barrel size and how it affects your eyesight are some of the major points of concern. However these criteria always remain individual prerogatives.

Lens designs used in older telescopes go by the name of Huygens and Ramsden. Professional astronomers are advised to not use these lenses anymore as they are not of superior quality, even though they are comparatively less expensive than other market lenses. These lenses also do not provide correction for chromatic aberration or the light circles that form around brighter objects when they are viewed.

Professional astronomers use orthoscopic lenses that are designed specifically for professional stargazing. Even amateurs will find these lenses good for their telescopes. The orthoscopic telescopes use four lenses in the eyepiece, and have a 45 degree field of vision (FOV). Since the eyepiece is the element most important to the quality of a telescope, this design is a winner. The lenses do not strain the user’s eyes, and can be used even for viewing closer objects like planets.

For a person with a moderate budget, a Barlow lens is a viable option. The design provides average quality but is a good bargain. It does not burn a hole in one’s pocket, and yet is not of inferior quality because of its cost. The range at which this lens is available starts at a low $30 and goes up to $70. The magnification factor is generally not enough for professional use, however for amateurs it should be enough. For hobbyists, it is an ideal lens.

When you’re looking for lenses for a telescope, it is important that you determine criteria that most comprehensively fulfill your needs from the lens. Adjustable lenses is a good option as it means you can view objects which are not too far, as well as distant stars with it, and thus obtain the best deal your money can buy you.

What is the best substitute for telescope lenses in making homemade Galilean telescopes?

There is no substitute - you need lenses of some description. They are _the_ principal component. It is like asking how to make a cup of tea without a cup.

What does it mean to piggyback one telescope on another telescope?

I don't quite understand the point of piggybacking one telescope into another telescope. Someone please explain this to me. I'll show you exactly what I am talking about.

" Meade ETX-125 piggy back on 10" LX200. 72 minutes luminance and 20 minutes per color channel. Autoguided with DSI PRO.".

Thank you in advance!

In the configuration that you mention, the smaller telescope is used as a guider scope while the larger telescope is used to take a picture. This is pretty common setup for astroimagers and allows for good "close-up" shots.

In some cases, the larger telescope is used as the guider and the smaller scope is used as the imager. This allows for nice wide field shots.

Heres some examples -
