Is there really much difference between 8-inch and 10 inch telescope?

I'm thinking of upgrading to a new telescope Maksutov Cassegrain my 102mm. I was originally looking at the Orion SkyQuest XT10 Intelliscope computer but then I saw somewhere that does not really make much difference. If I look at the Orion SkyQuest XT8 computed Intelliscope place? I believe I can come down with fever Opening * * cough * cold *.

youll get a better image with a 10 inch, but not too theres a difference I'd rather large Hubble

At the distance of the primary mirror wat I put the diagonal in a Newtonian telescope.?

Tell me about the focal length. I'm trying to make a truss tube Dobsonian design. The diameter of the mirror is 6 ", this is my second after a scope of 5" closed tube EQ. Can plss u give me the formula or sumthing. I kno there is no focal School Project, ABT U answered a question of black film, which means ur an Indian, where they can u get good information astronomical these days in India. I need help with things myscope n. Are u from space? or ru Vayada of galelio Nilesh

Since the distance focal failed to mention that it is impossible to measure the distance between the primary mirror and diagonal. I calculated that there must be more than a meter when the rate of f is high enough. I do not need be Indian to see Indian films. DVDs are released throughout the world. However, I am neither in space or Galileo. I run an astronomy organization myself. Am associated with many other international organizations.

What is a Dobsonian telescope good for under $ 500?

I'm new to the hobby and am trying to avoid the typical mistakes that noobs. As I have read many of them come with a cooling fan .... Can anyone shed some light on why a light box would need a fan cooling?

This is a good price point. You have several ways to optimize, I'll explain. 1. I'm ruling out monitoring. At this price there is no alternative good for monitoring, including optics. 2. I am NOT ruling out a digital computer. It's great to have something to help you traverse the sky. 3. I'm considering that trafficking "With" things, especially the eye, are not always best. 4. I'm thinking about the new prices, but should REALLY consider buying used. Vi inch Astromart born 10 $ 300 not long ago and there is nothing better than that. In all cases I am recommending Orion compared to alternatives such as Hardin. Is recognized good name and best resale value (Astromart join, a fee of $ 12). People pay the money due in part to ebay is well known for scams and fraud: I saw an eBay tool for sale in Montreal, tried to give up and buy it and wear it, only to discover that the same exact instrument had been sold in England before, the same images, the description itself, everything. Shipping Orion (Orion directly) are quite high, so you can find a better price you get (on Orion products!) Highpoint of Science, so the first call. OK - Option 1. Throw everything you can cat a cube of light and use the coming "with" the eye until you get more cash. More people prefer the "get as much openness as possible approach." Orion XT8 classic will get you there. Option 2. Get the Orion XT6 place and make it with your computer. Option 3. Get the Orion Star Blast for $ 175 and a 24 mm eyepiece optics Pan for about $ 300. Sounds crazy spend more on the telescope eyepiece, but someday will update and you still have the eye. Pan da optics in this area (direct experience), 3.5 degree panoramic field of view that is well corrected. You will be able to get around, beautiful views that are better than most binoculars and easier certainly use (arms do not tire.) With the arrival "with" eye to achieve higher power, you get good views of the moon and "Reasonable" (Not first class) views of Jupiter and Saturn (which are only available a few months of the year in any case, Jupiter is so low for observers N hemisphere there is very little time to "optimize" for looking at this planet until two or three years from now - plenty of time to update Idem for Saturn, whose rings are moving in the edge-on). So this little room is help you learn to navigate and point of a scope under heaven. Be objected that "you can not see much" in a 4.5-inch scope. To this I respond that there are thousands of devotees who spend thousands of dollars in 80, 90 and 102 mm refractor. Personally I agree that it is best to open access, but the bottom of a small instrument are also evident: ease of installation, panoramic width fields, and in the case of the explosion the star, good quality packaging at a lower price. Try to get a new copy or used (abebooks.com), to Sue French Celestial Sampler. This book is basically designed for the opening of four inches, and there are years of observation to make on their pages. The sky known artist, Stephen O'Meara has also published the work with a four-inch telescope (His main instrument). A four-inch instrument will ALL Messiers and several thousand NGCs. As a final point, I'm not saying you should get a four-inch reach and maintain for the rest of your life and use that and only that. But in fact this is a very easy to decide if astronomy is for you. If you receive the error that will finally get something bigger (maybe keep the small, maybe not) and probably spend a regular budget to astronomy, as some people have a budget for the bowling. So there is no single configuration that you need to be bound for the rest of his life, and they all have something to show. Of course, you should also consult Sky and Telescope website for a club near you so you can see many different configurations on the job. You can see that says, "I have to have something." And I can not emphasize enough that, although many people are horrified the idea of spending $ 12 to join Astromart (a payment for life time), which could easily save $ 200 on your first purchase and if you get your feet wet you will not feel nervous about buying any particular field, because you know the place to sell if you decide to move on. Preserving the sense of flexibility is important.

Choose a Good Beginners Telescope - Cut Through the Information Overload

So you've been bitten by the astronomy bug and want to get started with your very own telescope, but you're confused by the vast number of possible purchases? You are not alone, astronomy stores are accustomed to dealing with the confused beginner though of course not everybody has the opportunity to visit a specialist store. This article is intended to help cut through some of the confusion.

It's important to choose a telescope that is right for you, for example there is no point having a great big Dobsonian if you rarely get the chance to assemble it in a good dark sky location.

There are several factors to be considered from practical considerations like size, weight and portability to the price you can afford and indeed where you'll be doing the majority of your observing. Ignoring more advanced uses like astrophotography we might think along the following lines.

As a general rule, the larger the aperture the more you can expect out of your telescope. Refractors will generally outperform similar size reflectors. Refractors however are more expensive than reflectors, due to the extra high quality glass involved. They can also be impractical to handle at larger apertures where they can also reach very long tube lengths.

Large aperture reflectors can have comparatively short tubes and be very easy to handle as well as inexpensive. There is a little extra maintenance involved as you may need to clean and align the mirror from time to time, this procedure is known as collimation.

Catadioptric telescopes are a combination of refractor and reflector and are quite portable even at large apertures. A great many amateur astronomers who have access to good dark sky sites, ultimately end up with catadioptric telescopes because the offer a range of possibilities including astrophotography. The large ones, like most large aperture scopes, are not ideal in light polluted areas like the city and suburbs.

Those big Dobsonian telescopes are really just big reflectors mounted on simple turntables and their attraction is their huge light capture and simplicity of use, making them ideal for visual astronomy in a good location (again they are not so good in light polluted areas).

If you do not relish the thought of learning to find your way around the skies you could consider purchasing one of the models that come with a computerized mount. These 'Go-To' telescopes have made finding targets a breeze.

With those facts in mind you can now think about where you are going to do the most observing and choose a suitable beginners telescope. If you live in the city and are unlikely to get to a rural location for observing then perhaps stick with the small to medium size refractors, reflectors or catadioptrics, with or without the go-to function, your budget will probably start to dictate the choices here! If on the other hand you live in a dark sky area then my recommendation is to buy a great big Dobsonian. These offer so much viewing pleasure and are so simple to use it is difficult to fault them.

Telescopes for Beginners

i have an 8 inch dobsonian telescope, whats the best magnification i can get?

all i ver get is the outlines of the planets, and it shows up fairly small, what can i do to get really high magnification, what type of eyepieces do i neeed?

The planets *are* small dots in amateur telescopes.

With experience, you will learn to see the detail in those small dots.

The usual rule of thumb (2x per millimeter of aperture) says that the maximum magnification you would want to use on your telescope is 400x. This assumes perfect seeing, which rarely happens. Your views are usually limited by the atmosphere.

is this a good telescope ?

Orion SkyQuest XT6 Classic Dobsonian Telescope

somebody said this was good for first time buyers is it a good scope? also is there a smaller version of this scope for a cheeper price ? and what are the magnifications on this thing (50x,100x) ?

thanks,
Cy

There is a 4.5" one that's a little lower in cost, but unless you really need something super portable and light weight, you'll be better served by getting the 6" one, even if it means you've got to wait a little longer.

A 6" scope will gather 77% more light than a 4.5" one. That's significant.

The magnification will depend on the eyepieces you use. The scope comes with a 25mm eyepiece that will give you 48 power. You can buy extra eyepieces to get higher or lower magnification.

I'd consider getting a 32mm plossl eyepiece as the first accessory - it'll give you lower power, but it'll also allow you to see more sky at once so it'll be easier to find things. As a third eyepiece, I'd look for something around 12mm.

Some people recommend barlow lenses as accessories. Personally, I am not impressed with the optical quality of reasonably priced barlows and feel you'd be better off buying an extra eyepiece.

When you're on a tight budget, the Orion Dobs are a very good place to start.

Also - you should look for a local astronomical society and visit them while you're saving up for your scope. You'll get to look through their scopes for free, and it's possible one of the members might have an xt6 or a similar scope you can try before you actually make your purchase.

Orion Expanse-6, 9, 15,

Barlow 2x-Orion Shorty, Housebrand Barlow 2x aluminum

Will use my Huygenian Eyepieces for solar viewing,
Plossls and UW Eyepieces for astronomical viewing, Orion Expanses for planetary viewing, and Kellner for back up lenses (show and tell at star parties).

which eyepiece(s) do I not need? quality in; for example, i've got a SP 26mm, Housebrand Plossl 25, and Celestron Plossl 25. Obviously, I've got two extra.

Thanks. Hoping to sell unnecessary eyepieces

Eyepiece preference is a personal thing, so you'll have to decide which ones are keepers. I think six eyepieces plus a barlow constitute an adequate collection - something like 6, 9, 12, 16, 25, 30. The 40 mm Plossl (assuming it's a 1.25") has a narrow apparent field and shows about as much sky as the 30 mm, so it can probably go. If you haven't already formed an opinion, compare the performance of your 25-26 mm Plossls and keep the best one. Consider whether you need both 20 and 25 mm focal lengths; you may find you have three superfluous eyepieces. Choose one from the 9.7-10 mm, too. Depending on how good the Plossls are, you might want to get rid of the 6.5, 9.7, 10, and 15 and use the Expanse eyepieces exclusively.

Huygens for solar viewing? Are you doing solar projection? Not a good idea with a reflector, as it can focus the sunlight on the inside of the tube and burn it. And if your secondary is glued on, the heat can weaken the bond and make it fall on your primary. Better to get some Astro-Solar film and make a solar filter.

As I see it, you could sell maybe eight of your Plossls. Decide which focal length you get the most use out of, and put the money towards a premium eyepiece in that focal length. Buy used on Astromart ( http://www.astromart.com/ )for the best deals.

Why A Telescope Mount Is A Necessity For Stargazing

If you have ever tried looking through a telescope without a telescope mount to steady your equipment, you understand the difficulty of focusing on a set object in the night skies. Compound that problem with a heavenly body that is actually moving across the sky and you realize that it is almost impossible to track this object. There is no doubt, stability of your telescope is key to enjoyable stargazing.

Purpose of a Telescope Mount

A telescope mount provides a stable platform for your telescope, whether it is a refracting telescope, reflecting telescope, Dobsonian telescope, or catadiotric telescope. A telescope mount will ensure that your viewing of a celestial body is not interrupted by unexpected movement. It also determines how you will position your body relative to the telescope to view the night's sky, determining how comfortable you will be over any extended period of stargazing.

Types of Telescope Mounts

Altazimuth telescope mounts are generally used on a Dobsonian type telescope. These telescopes look like a large canister and are mounted on a chassis that provides limited mounting capabilities. With this type of mount, the telescope can be adjusted in up and down or left and right positions. This range of movement in a telescope mount is generally fine for the beginner and intermediate astronomer.

Equatorial mounts are more advanced and allow for greater movement to coincide with the movement of planet Earth. As good as this sounds, there is a level of skill required by the user. The user will need to understand the planet movement and be required to make minor adjustments to the telescope mount. This type of mount is usually reserved for higher quality telescopes, so it is really geared for the intermediate to advanced astronomer. However, with a little experience and practice, the mount could be used by most stargazers.

In this hi-tech era, computers have become an integral part of astronomy and are used to move and track heavenly bodies. Well, an advanced telescope mount, though expensive, is available that provides this kind of computer tracking and superior viewing options. This mount even facilitates the viewing through the computer monitor as well as the eyepiece, with a few clicks of your mouse moving the mount into position.

Choosing the Right Mount

In choosing the right mount, you must first determine what the intended use of the telescope is. Other considerations are the skill level and specific needs of the operator. Determining the type of terrain the mount will be used on will dictate the stability requirements. And, of course, your astronomy budget will play a major role in what type of telescope mount you will purchase.

Choose a mount that will allow for a comfortable body position for times of extended viewing. Nothing can ruin a stargazing experience faster than being required to contort your body in unnatural positions to get a satisfactory view of your desired object.

So, to choose the right telescope mount, take the time and effort to research the different brands of telescope mounts and the various quality levels available. Then, and only then, choose the one that best suits your needs and falls within your budget limits. It can make the difference between a comfortable, enjoyable stargazing experience and a cramped, short-lived outing.

Experts in astronomy and telescopes, please help!?

i am buying a telescope and my price range is around 220$. i have decided that i am either getting the Orion StarBlast 4.5 Astro Reflector Telescope or the Orion SkyQuest XT4.5 Classic Dobsonian Telescope. which one should i buy? and various reviews say that i should buy a barlow lens and a light filter. what ones should i buy and where can i get them? take price into account. please no lazy idiots making pathetic attempts to be witty, it grows tiresome.

Well, ..., is there any way you can save your money just a little longer and get the Orion XT6 (at $279.95)? You really need a 6" mirror for deep sky observing. It's an excellent scope, worth saving for, and it will give you many years of trouble free observing.

I beleieve the scope comes with a 26mm plossl eyepiece. If your money is tight (an whose isn't these days), you can always by extra lenses and a barlow lens later. For now get the scope and learn how to use it before buying a bunch of eyepieces.

What telescope is better?

The Meade 8" f/6 LightBridge Truss-Type Dobsonian DX or the Orion Skyquest XT8 Dobsonian? Please answer only if you know something about telescopes...

for a 8" reflector, I would go with the solid tube design.
if you are talking a 12"-16" scope, then I would prefer the trusses.

How to Use a Telescope - Comprehensive Telescope Kits

For the budding stargazer, the most important instrument in his inventory should be a telescope. Once this debate is resolved, the next question is where to source this all important instrument from. You can work from scratch, buy all the raw material required, and build your own telescope, or you can take the easier and more practical way out and buy yourself a telescope kit which contains every last thing you will need to make you telescope and then just assemble the supplies together. It is the telescope kit that is the recommended option for a beginner. Ideally, only professional should attempt to build a telescope out of practically nothing. Telescope kits not only come with everything you need to build a good telescope, they also contain a descriptive instruction manual that will lead you through each step of the telescope construction process.

The commonly available kits have the elements and the guides for making a Dobsonian telescope. This telescope uses a secondary mirror in addition to a primary mirror. The other optical constituents of this telescope are a finder scope, an eye piece, a focuser, and the mirror support system. The housing compartment for all these elements is not included as part of the kit.

Using such kits to construct your own telescope is graced with numerous advantages. Most of these advantageous highlights are meant for beginners, who can save both time and money with this option. A complete kit allows the builder to save the time that would otherwise be spent searching high and low for the correct components. The average price of a telescope kit is $200 to $300. They can be purchased at hobby centers everywhere, and if you find a discount, the better bargains you will get.

For teachers who need a demonstration to incite the interest of youngsters and get them hooked onto an interesting hobby such as this, telescope kits are a good teaching aid. It is possible to use such a kit for classes in school and demonstrate the whole process to the students. There is no age restriction for this ho9bby, making it a good hobby for anyone interested in it.

Telescope kits generally are aimed at beginners, amateurs just starting out on their telescope love affair, or at students of the astronomy who intend to pursue a profession in the field someday. To build a telescope using such a kit, you do not need a degree in astronomy or even the experience of an expert. Absolutely any novice is capable of constructing a decent instrument with the instructions given. Manuals that come with the kits, are step-by-step guides, and even have diagrams that explain the methods detailed. Affordably price, and attractively marketed, these kits can pack a pretty powerful telescope and are a lure for any beginner.

It takes only 2-3 days to have an operational, fully functional telescope in your hands after you get your kit. The total work-hours required for it are hardly 15 or 20 from your time. You can work for an hour a day or work a marathon stretch over two days to complete your project. A lazy weekend is the best time to get started. There is never the complication that arises from missing a crucial element during purchase, because these kits always have everything. If you find something damaged, you can have it replaced at the store you bought the kit from. However, it is best to run through the content of the kit and check for quality at the time you make the purchase.

If you are a beginner, do not think too much about basic construction from sourced raw material. If you are a professional, however, you have the options open to you.

I am considering making my own 6 or 8 inch dobsonian telescope. What's a good focal ratio for general views

Use whatever you can get: it doesn't make *that* much of a difference. 6 inch f/8 and 8 inch f/6 are stock items, and result in a reasonable tube length.

If you are planning to grind your own mirror, you should not have to ask here.

Good things to see with my telescope?

I have a orion xt8 and i was wondering what can i see with it other than planets? I have a 25mm and a 6.3mm eyepiece. Will i be able to see color in objects other than planets?

http://www.telescope.com/control/product/~category_id=dobsonians/~pcategory=telescopes/~product_id=08943/~sSearchSession=335c2766-68b8-4ba7-ac8c-c49b0d3f0e9b

I have an Orion 10" as well as an 8" reflector. I use the 8 inch for imaging and I can tell you that my 8" performs superbly. It is the ideal size for fast set-up and yet has enough aperture to see even the faint galaxies in Leo.

There are only a handful of objects that show color to the human eye in a telescope. Alberio in Cygnus, The (Herschel's) Garnet Star in Cepheus, Antares in Scorpius are some of them.
