Cosmic ray hotspots Puzzle Researchers

Hot on the heels of speculation that cosmic rays may have revealed the signing of elusive dark matter in space, new observations could challenge that idea and reinforce an alternative explanation.

An experiment in seven years the Milagro cosmic ray detector near Los Alamos, New Mexico, has shown "the bright patches" of high energy cosmic rays on Sky1 - something incompatible with a source of dark matter.

Cosmic rays are charged particles, mainly protons and electrons, which occur in space and generally have a characteristic energy spectrum - the higher its energy, which are rarer.

But last week, researchers working Delgado advanced in the ionization calorimeter (ATIC) experiment, which uses sensors by a high altitude balloon to measure cosmic ray electrons over Antarctica, reported an unexpected hit in the energy spectrum, corresponding to an excess of electrons with energies between 300 and 800 gigaelectronvolts2.

Advice to the anomaly have seen before. A satellite observatory - Payload Antimatter Matter Exploration and Light nuclei Astrophysics (Pamela) - detects a ray positron excess cosmic, anti-particles like electrons energies3. And a Japanese balloon flame detector transmission electron telescope with scintillating fibers (BETS) also found a small excess of cosmic ray electrons energy4 high.

These cosmic rays may be the decay products of hypothetical dark matter particles, believed to represent about 85% of all matter in the Universe. Astronomers have benefited from the gravitational effects dark matter to explain why rotating galaxies are not separated, and rotating in space. But as its name suggests, dark matter can not be seen directly and its identity remains obscure.

A common assumption is that dark matter consists of a hitherto unknown particle that interacts weakly with other forms of matter. In some theories, two dark matter particles are predicted to annihilate when they collide, producing a high energy electron-positron pair. This could explain ATIC cosmic ray hit and indications that the PAMELA data. But if that is the case, anomalous cosmic rays are distributed more or less uniformly across the sky.

By contrast, the Milagro team, led by Jordan Goodman at the University of Maryland, College Park, which is cosmic ray protons grouped in two 'hot spots': one between the constellations of Orion and Taurus, the other near Gemini. They think the excess of cosmic rays may come from exotic sources such as neutron stars known as pulsars, rapidly spinning, rather than matter annihilations dark.
Dark Matter Mystery

Goodman stresses that it is still unclear whether the ATIC and the results are related Miracle, because the former measure cosmic ray electrons while the last proton detection. But he says that the sources of the protons that could plausibly have also been generated electrons and positrons are in the previous studies. "If it's the same phenomenon takes all, then there is dark matter," he says.

But the explanation Dark mater is not yet ruled. "I was totally perplexed by the hot spots, but I see no reason to connect to the ATIC results," says Dan Hooper, a theoretical physicist at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Illinois.

The Milagro detector is not intended primarily for research of cosmic rays, but is used for gamma ray astronomy. When high-energy gamma rays hit our atmosphere cause a flood of alien particles. These particles annihilate in a collision with the water in the tank Miracle giant, producing a flash of light that can be recorded by sensors.

However, 99.9% of the flashes seen by Milagro come from collisions of cosmic ray protons, said Goodman. This creates a background signal that must be subtracted to identify the rays gamma energy astrophysical sources. Goodman says that the search for point sources of cosmic ray protons in this context was a surprise for them.

A previous experiment from cosmic rays called the Tibet air shower array, by a team of researchers in Japan and China, saw the great differences in the intensity of cosmic rays between the two hemispheres5, but nobody had seen before these concentrations of smaller scale.

The Miracle team suggests that the protons, with energies of about 10,000 gigaelectronvolts can be generated in the extreme environment astrophysicists superdense neutron star or pulsar. At least some rays high-energy cosmic have previously been shown to come from supermassive black hole in the vicinity galaxies6.

"We do not know what it is causing, "Goodman admits. He suggests that the location may be partly caused by magnetic fields focusing trajectories of the protons.

But in general, magnetic fields in interstellar space would have an influence at random, destroying any bright spot, says Hooper. "I can not imagine how it was created, and I do not know if anybody has any cool idea, "he says.

Anybody know of a good place to use a telescope, near Orlando?

Recently got a new telescope and I'm excited to try it out. I live near Orlando airport though so anywhere near my house has a lot of light pollution. Does anyone know of a good place with 30 minutes of Orlando where I could go and try it? Looking for a safe and legal.

Good afternoon I have a couple of suggestions to go and test it in the safe and legal. my ideas are Christmas in the area, or even go to the beach and do it. that's something like doing so. I'ma male 44 years of age in the area of Orlando / Winter Park.

What are image stabilization binoculars

image stabilization binoculars are the new standard when it comes binoculars.

Have you ever wished for a pair of binoculars you will not leave you with a blurry image no matter what you did to solve it?

Many sometimes blurred images due to human movement and error. This can happen no matter how careful you are or fixed. With image stabilization technology can have a pair of binoculars that automatically make corrections to adjust to shake hands or even a slight movement that comes from breathing.

A number of uses for this type of binoculars.

- One of the largest and best known is probably used bird watching. Observation of birds is a wonderful pastime that can be relaxing or exciting and that it requires nothing more than a book for you to know the birds are watching with a good pair of binoculars.

One of the biggest complaints is not being able to see the birds clearly making it difficult to determine what kind of bird is or what family belongs to the sub. Having a pair of binoculars that can provide a stable image that then will result in correct or spend less time trying to correct a little blurry image.

This means you have a better chance of seeing the bird and be able to recognize it before it gets away.

- Another great use for image stabilization binoculars is to look at the stars and celestial viewing smoothly, such as comets or shooting stars.

While telescopes can be best for close look at these especially if you want to look at the images that are distant. Binoculars can be a great way to see objects like planets and some of the brightest stars.

One of the biggest problems, even with telescopes is the fact that it takes forever to make adjustments. This is why telescopes come with tripods. Having an image stabilization binoculars can make a difference when you are out casually watching the stars, or when you are looking for certain events.

These are just two of the many uses you can find for the image stabilization binoculars.

They are the perfect complement to travel, and events such as races. You can enjoy the race no matter where your seat is. You can see the birds, and stars, including those used to obtain a view about failures. These glasses use a technology called stabilization of the tilt mechanism to correct human movements may create a lot to blur the image is corrected. This happens often and may be related to the actual weight of the equipment.

Depending on the style and type of binoculars you get and what they can do can be very heavy, as a result, it is difficult for them to maintain stable use. This is why image stabilization technology has become popular to be able to offer a clear picture no matter what the situation is.

Canon Binoculars,
Digital Cameras, Camcorders and Scanners, he recommends Just Canon.

I have a choice of course a Bushnell 150x50mm refractor telescope or Binoculars.wht Zoom 15x-7 to go

I can get one free. I've always wanted a telescope, but I'm not sure if I have offered me space to explore for fun.

Do not buy any products range Bushnell low are terrible. I have a Christmas and really stink. Also I do not recommend zoom binoculars for astronomy. Get a good pair of 15-70 and is cheaper good to go. So if you really enjoy to save a little and get a decent telescope. "What about zoom binoculars? Our recommendation general is to avoid catching the binoculars because of the limitations inherent in the optical zoom. Although high-quality zoom lenses are available for cameras, same can not be said of zoom binoculars. The biggest problem with zoom binoculars is the difficulty of mechanical maintenance of the capture of both eyes in perfect synchronization (regardless of manufacturer or cost). Some other disadvantages are significantly reduced field of view in the lower range of increase (compared fixed telephony at the same power binoculars), and the difficulty of retaining the higher magnifications. For certain applications, the advantages and convenience of the function zoom might be worth the trade-offs, therefore, do not offer two models. Our 10-30x60-36x70 and 12 are constructed with the same high standards as our models fixed load, and perform substantially better than the cheap zooms that flood the market numerous. In any case, be sure to avoid the binoculars to zoom-ridiculously increases high, such as "20-100x70. Without exception, they are more than toys, no matter the price. "

Can I use a telescope outside in freezing temperatures?

I've never tried using binoculars or telescopes outside during winter when our temperature reaches as low as 50 below F with with chills 70+ below. I plan on getting a telescope this summer and I wonder if I can take it out during winter? Thanks.

It sure can. I live in an area that reaches temperatures just as you described (Northwest Territories, Canada) and telescopes work just fine. Actually, cold winter skies are typically clearer since there is less humidity. There are a few words of warning I should give, though. As you can imagine one of the toughest parts is keeping your hands warm. You need to find gloves that are thick, but not so thick that you are unable to work the equipment, else you'll be taking your gloves off every 10 seconds.

Also, especially if you are using a refractor, make sure your scope has PLENTY of time to cool down to the temperature of the environment it is in! Refractors suffer from this especially because the lenses are sealed in a tube and the air inside does not change temperature as quickly as, say, a Newtonian or a Dobsonian which is open to the air. Even with Newtonian and Dobsonians, however, you want to make sure your mirror has had enough time to cool. Consequently, one of the best places to keep the actual tube assembly of your telescope and eyepieces when not in use is in a shed that is protected from the elements, but not heated. Then you won't have to wait for your scope to cool down. And, lastly, as with observing in any temperature or locale, try to do it on a night when it is not windy. Not only does it make for more comfortable observing, but you'll find the atmosphere is usually a little more cooperative (less flickering and atmospheric interference).

Hope this helps. Enjoy observing, and try to keep warm. :)

Buying Sniper Rifles to Tip the Scales of Hunting

Sniper rifles are used not just for military purposes but also for hunting. The telescopic lens can help the hunter track and pinpoint the target quarry. The design of the sniper rifles can help the hunters to position themselves and shoot the game without becoming detected. There are many different types of rifles which are used for sniper purposes.

These sniper rifles are not confined to one country only. They are also designed to cater for different caliber bullets. For this reason if you feel that a sniper rifle will be of more help in your hunting it may be wise if you look these different rifles over carefully. The first factor for your choosing sniper rifles is that of the design and telescopic lens.

When you hold this rifle and any other sniper rifles in your hands the balance of the rifle should be perfect. You shoulders and arms should not be aching from holding the rifle in the position you desire. As most sniper rifles have telescopic lens you should have the ability of detaching the lens whenever you want. The lens itself should be in excellent condition.

As there are hunters who prefer to do their hunting in the nighttime the sniper rifles which has night vision telescopic lens will help them to see the night roaming game. The other factors you should think about when you are considering buying one of the types of rifles is the smooth trigger action you will get.

Like with the ordinary rifles sniper rifles come in similar action triggers. You will be able to select from bolt acti

About the Author

funny or not?

A man decided to buy a new telescope for his rifle. He goes to a rifle shop, and asks the clerk to show him a scope.
The clerk takes out a scope, and says to the man, "This scope is so good, you can see my house all the way up on that hill".The man takes a look through the scope, and starts laughing.

"What's so funny?" asks the clerk.

"I see a naked man and a naked woman running around in the house", the man replies.

The clerk grabs the scope from the man, and looks at his house. Then he hands two bullets to the man and says, "Here are two bullets, I'll give you this scope for nothing if you take these two bullets, shoot my wife's head off and shoot the guy's dick off".

The man takes another look through the scope, and says,
"You know what?I think I can do that with one shot!"

and yet again the irony of it all. lmao.....

How Galileo’s Telescope Changed Astronomy

Before Galileo turned his telescope toward the night sky the act of astronomy was pretty much an astrological pursuit where objects and motions of object in the sky were explained using ancient and archaic understandings of the universe and how it works.

But he didn’t just observe and note new objects in the sky. He applied scientific methods, mathematical laws, and logical thinking to what he observed and it is this cross discipline approach that created the modern science of observational astronomy.

Galileo is often thought of as inventing the telescope. He didn’t invent the telescope but he was the first person to turn one toward the night sky. And the observations he made created the new science of modern astronomy where telescopes are used to help us understand our universe, our place in it, and how it works.

Galileo first heard about the mysterious telescope in 1609 and set out to make a copy for himself. This first telescope magnified images about three times. And over the course of a decade Galileo continued to make more telescopes and his most powerful one magnified images about ten times. This telescope enabled him to see things never before seen. And it enabled him to change our view of the universe and of the objects in the sky.

The first thing that Galileo turned his telescope to was the moon and by observing it over the course of many nights he made an important discovery. He saw that dark areas on the surface grew and shrunk depending on where the moon was in relation to the sun. From this he made the correct deduction that these dark areas were shadows cast by craters and mountains. He further explained with geometry that the height of the mountains and depth of the craters could be correctly calculated. This was an astonishingly important revelation in our view of the universe because it was previously believed that the moon was a smooth surfaced object.

Another extraordinary observation, and the most important, that Galileo made was the discovery of the four largest moons around Jupiter. They were previously unviewable but with his ten-power telescope he could see them. And after viewing them over the course of several nights he observed that they moved. With further careful observation and calculation he proved that they revolved around Jupiter. And this was a universe changing observation because it was previously believed that everything in the universe revolved around the Earth.

Galileo went on to make many telescopes and to make many other important observations in both the night and day sky including the discovery of spots on the sun and the discovery of the rings of Saturn. His observations in the sky spurred on many other telescope makers and astronomers to further explore the amazing and mysterious objects in the sky. But more importantly he also spurred on other astronomers to apply the laws and lessons of mathematics and logic to their observations in a quest to understand how the universe works.

This creation of the modern science of telescopic astronomy was clearly born in 1610 when he published his work called “Sidereus Nuncius” or the “Starry Messenger”. This work is still available to this day and is considered one of the most important written scientific works.

The Joy of Telescopes and Astronomy

Why wouldn’t the hubble space telescope naturally stay pointed in the same direction?

Advanced technology is needed to keep a
telescope, travelling at almost 30 000 km/h
while orbiting Earth, aimed steadily at one
tiny spot for a long time. this is for grad 9 science

It depends on your frame of reference. Relative to the HST's own frame of reference, it IS always pointed the same direction. However, relative motion (or apparent relative motion) between HST and objects it is attempting to observe can be caused by various phenomenon, such as motion of the objects being observed, inertia of the HST, inertia of its fuel, solar wind, micrometeorites, drag, interstellar matter, etc.

Has anybody seen a star through a telescope?

What does it look like? I've never seen what one looks like. Plus, there's a star...well...I think it's a star anyway. It sparkles red, blue, and white and it's very big, to the left of the big dipper. Is that a planet or a star? Answer both questions please. Thanks.

Yes and it looks like a big fire ball with flames coming out of the sides, and the other thing is a nebula

See Better At Events

Binoculars are a great hand-held device that allows users to use both eyes to view a variety of activities and objects as if they were very close, even they may be some distance away. The use two tiny telescopes, one for each eye, to allow you see a long way past your normal range of vision. Both eyes are focused together through the binoculars, making a complete picture. There are some activities that required the use of binoculars, and others that are just a lot more fun when they are used.

Binoculars Rock!

Ever try to get front row tickets for a rock concert? Even if you can afford them, fighting the crowds in the mosh pit isn't quite the relaxing concert experience you thought it was cracked up to be—and you still can't see a whole lot with heads (usually taller than yours) bobbing up and down around you—and you tend to get quite a kink in your neck trying to look up at the stage. Altogether, it's not that satisfying an experience. A much more pleasant experience would be to get a good quality pair of binoculars and take a comfortable seat in the balcony!

Binoculars Score Big With Sports Fans

It's the same thing with sporting events. You'll have a greater chance of being hit with a foul ball when you sit in the front row of a baseball game than seeing plenty of action. Imagine sitting higher in the stands with a pair of binoculars in one hand and a hot dog in the other. You will have a bird's eye view of the field this way. You can see what's going happening on the entire field rather than just one corner.

To See Or Not To See—That Is The Question

For anyone who hikes, hunts, camps, boats, enjoys watching wildlife like deer or birds, or wants to go to special events, a good pair of binoculars is essential. There will be no need for squinting or wondering what's going on. You will be able to clearly see what's happening. A good pair of binoculars can make the difference between enjoying an event and wishing you had just stayed home.

If you're going to participate, do it fully, with enthusiasm, and with the proper equipment. Hiking is infinitely more enjoyable when you climb to the top of a peak and can use your binoculars to see activity on another ridge across the ravine—or zoom in on the eagle's nest at the top of the tall tree to see a bald eagle up close and personal.

The Hunt Is On

Deer hunting with a pair of binoculars lets you spot a big rack on a buck from your deer stand before the deer even gets close enough to get spooked, so you have ample time to sight in your rifle and get the shot of a lifetime. They are often the critical difference between a trophy mount on your living room wall and a sad story to tell at deer camp about "the one that got away".

Binoculars will help with any kind of hunting whether its elk, moose, duck, fox, or pheasant. They will give you the edge you need when hunting for smaller and more elusive animals.

Outdoor Enthusiasts Set Their Sights On The Details

Outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds rely on binoculars to see details they would otherwise miss—like the mating habits of dangerous animals in the wild or mothers nurturing their young. In fact, anyone interested in watching and studying any species of wildlife will find binoculars an essential tool for this pastime.

And of course, no self-respecting bird watcher would be caught out in a field without a pair of good binoculars to help him or her see the colorful details of feathers and foul up close. A pair of adjustable binoculars is essential if you want to watch birds in their natural habitats and study their movements and behaviors without disturbing them.

The Perfect Pair For Every Activity

Regardless of your choice of activities—whether you're be stargazing or scanning the water ahead for obstructions while boating—chances are there is a pair of binoculars designed with that purpose in mind. Once you know how you will use your binoculars, you can find the perfect pair created for that use. Binoculars do vary in size, shape, amount of magnification, cost, and other factors, so you can select the pair that works best for you.

What is the magnification of the telescope?

A researcher is trying to shoot a tranquilizer dart at a 2.2-m-tall rhino that is 160m away. Its angular size as seen through the rifle telescope is 9.9 degrees.
What is the magnification of the telescope?

Without the scope the rhino would subtend an angle

ang0 = 2.2/160 radians = 0.78 degrees

Therefore, the magnification is

M = 9.9/0.78 = 12.7 approximately

High Power Laser Pointer & Portable Laser Applications

"A solution looking for a problem" - Charles H. Townes on the application of lasers.

Since lasers were developed, they have had numerous applications in a number of diverse fields. Listed here are just some of the application for high power laser pointers and portable lasers.

Astronomy

With a brilliant beam stretching for miles into the night sky, high power green and red laser pointers are excellent tools for astronomy. Easy and quick identification and pin pointing stars and other celestial bodies. No need for difficulties, frustration or wasted time pointing with your finger or trying to explain. A laser pointer can be used to identify and pinpoint any object in just a few seconds.

High power portable lasers can also be mounted on telescopes as a visual indicator of where the telescope is pointing. Portable laser is also ideal for mounting on GOTO mounts/telescopes to help direct other people with telescopes and binoculars to an object. With no duty cycle, an on/off switch and very durable construction, a portable laser can be both conveniently and easily mounted on almost any make of telescope and used by hand.

Red light is scattered less by the atmosphere than green light because red light has a longer wave length making green lasers more visible and suitable for astronomy. The light from green lasers also has the advantage of being the wavelength that our eyes are most sensitive to.

Most cheap low powered laser pointers are not effective to be used in astronomy. The beam from these lasers is too weak and easily obscured by ambient light, smog and fog. The beams from high power laser pointers will easily be visible at night in the worst of conditions with the higher powered models even being visible during the day. Perfect for dawn and dusk astronomy.

Photography

Lasers are visually stunning and are used to create very impressive and dynamic photographs. When a camera is used on extended exposure, a high power laser pointer can be used to draw, make pictures and create marvelous visual effects. The proliferation of laser photographs online is a testament to the popularity of lasers and photography.

Lasers and photography is not just limited to lasers pointers and hobbyists. Specialist lasers with short powerful pulses make high speed photography with exposure time of several trillionth of a second possible.

Aiming devices

As a sports person out for some target practice or a soldier on the battlefield, high power laser pointers can help you improve your aim and accuracy. With a range well in excess of 10 miles at night, laser pointers will give you the ability to line up any target in visual range. Even in broad daylight, the green laser dot will be a visible aiming point that can greatly improve accuracy.

Construction/Alignment

On construction and building sites, high power laser pointers and portable lasers are ideal for engineers and site mangers to point out details and features. The laser beam dot is clearly visible in all conditions allowing the quick and efficient identification of features on a site. Effectively saving money through the reduction of wasted time and minimizing errors.

Laser pointers are also used for aligning objects over long distances. High power laser pointers are commonly used by both road construction crews and ground keepers at major sporting venues, world wide.

Avian dispersal

Farmers, airport ground controllers, pet owners and naturalists all use portable lasers as a non lethal method of avian dispersal. Lasers have been instrumental in the reduction of bird strike rates and in effective avian predator management for a number of protected bird species.

Both laser pointers and portable lasers are used by farmers from various countries to supplement their avian dispersal programs. By using our lasers, farmers have been able greatly reduce their cost (rifle or ammunition costs) with zero impact on wildlife and still adhere to local laws for wildlife protection.

Laser shows & entertainment

No rave or dance venue now is complete with out a laser show. The same can be said for any major out door event with the Asian games, Commonwealth games, Afro-Asian games and Olympic games being classic examples.

Both high power laser pointers and portable lasers can also be used with basic optics to create similar light shows on a smaller scale. The shows you can do with lasers range in complexity from a simple star diffraction grating to a more elaborate set ups with galvanometers and dichroic mirrors.

Medical

Lasers in medicine have a wide range of applications range from vision correction and surgery to wound cauterization and the acceleration of soft tissue healing. In brief, the lasers used in are divided into two categories, high power green lasers (3000mW to 10000mW) and low power red and infrared lasers (1mW to 500mW).

High powered lasers are used to cut through tissue and seal/cauterize wounds where as low level lasers are used to treat injuries and promote healing. Though not designed medical use and not to be used with out medical approval, high power laser pointers and portable lasers and infrared laser pointers do in both theory and practice have medical applications.

Non lethal deterrent

Laser pointers and portable lasers are now commonly used by law enforcement agencies and armed forces around the world as a highly effective method of non lethal deterrent. The beam from these lasers can temporarily overwhelm a hostiles visual senses and cause severe disorientation, effectively neutralizing them without resulting in permanent eye damage or the use of force.

Military applications for laser pointers range from painting targets and directing troop movements to warning potential hostiles. Portable lasers are also used by the military to how to warn/deter suspicious or aggressively driven vehicles that approach checkpoints or convoy operations with out using potentially lethal force.

High power laser pointer has been used by a number of coalition force members in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Being durable, field portable and with a beam that can span the largest battlefield, well built high power laser pointers are ideal for the role of non lethal deterrent.

Experiments

Lasers can provide you with hours of fun conducting experiments that provide insights into light, optics, electronics, energy and lots more. Much more beneficial and enjoyable a boring class room or stale text book.

Experiments can range in complexity from some as simple as popping a balloon (heat conduction and reflectivity) to as complicated as bending light (wave propagation).

Camping/Hiking

Laser pointers and portable lasers are great aids for camping and hiking. There is nothing worse than being stuck out in the middle of the bush during the wind and rain and with wet matches and not being able to light a fire. High powered lasers are great for lighting fires. Lasers with a beam that is visible for miles can also be used to signal for help in the event that you are lost or need aid.

Lasers can also provide adequate illumination at night that unlike a normal torch, will not ruin your night vision. High power laser pointer are so light and small, you can hike with them in your pockets and not even notice the weight. The larger laser portable lasers weigh the same as a small flashlight and can easily fit in your back pack. It's also strong enough to survive the heaviest pounding and roughest trail.

Having Fun

There is nothing like having the coolest high tech gadget with a lethal sky spanning beam to impress your friends. Just imagine the look on their faces when you start popping balloons and lighting matches. Not to mention the attention you'll get when you use your laser outside at night projecting a bright green/red/blue light that goes for miles. High power laser pointers and portable lasers are definitely not toys but they are a lot of fun.

Which should be the best option?

My daughter is all Astronomy (14 years old) and we are planning to buy her a telescope, but we have found amongst many the "Refractor and Reflector" options at this time before buying, and before we make a decision, we would like to know if this is the only difference we should look into, or if there is some other factors we should weight on, before we make a decision on which one is best for our pockets ??

Never, ever buy from Walmart, Coatco, Target, or any other discount store like that. Junk scopes are flooded into the market from those stores. You will be buying nothing but bad optics and plastic.

http://oriontelescopes.com/

Orion is the very best for value and for customer service to. I have 2 of their scopes and I will only buy from them from now on.

Things to consider are size--can the user lift and transport the scope to the viewing site easily? If not, then it will gather dust in a closet. Can the viewer reach all the knobs and buttons? I have a long tube large manual refractor and it is very dificult for me to reach the knobs when I am pointed to Zenith. I am not a tall person.

Take your time in making your decision.

I would like to suggest that you join a local astronomy club or astronomical society BEFORE you spend your money on a scope. There are many different kinds of scopes and what is perfect for one person is not perfect for another. Everyone has their own set of eyeballs and no two are the same. If you join a club, you can attend a few of their star parties and try out members scopes to see what works best for you before you buy a scope. The members can also help you when you get your scope and show you how to get the most out of your new scope. Hint: they will be especially helpful if you take cookies to star parties.

Some people will suggest that you purchase binnoculars. Not a bad idea but dont buy anything less than 10x50 and you must have a tripod too or you will not be happy with your astronomical views because they will be too shakey from your movements. Personally, I prefer a scope to binos.

But when you buy go Orion and you wont be disappointed.

Telehandlers - Differences Between Articulated Telehandlers And Rigid Chassis Telehandlers

Telehandlers have gained enormous popularity in recent years and are now a familiar sight on construction jobs and farms worldwide. There are two type of telehandler - those constructed with a rigid chassis and the up and coming telehandlers manufactured with an articulated chassis.

The most common telehandler found is the rigid chassis telehandler which utilizes a side mounted mast. This telehandler platform is great for pallet work, but very inefficient for loading work long term, as the stress on the front CV joints and chassis is immense, when the bucket is filled. The rigid bodied loaders are designed for pallet work aren't generally recommended for bucket loading tasks as maintenance costs are high long term.

Articulated telehandlers and loaders are rapidly gaining popularity as users are beginning to identify the longevity benefits when they invest in a quality, heavy duty, articulated telehandler, particularly for bucket work. Articulated loaders are built on a heavy duty articulated loader chassis - one that is designed for earthmoving and heavy duty pushing work. There is no doubt worldwide that articulated loaders dominated heavy earthmoving and this same design has been incorporated into the telehandler vehicle. This allows users to benefit from the strength of an articulated loader combined with the lift of a telehandler.

Please note, it is important to decide initially if a telehandler is actually the best choice for the job. An articulated front end loader is often a better choice for most tasks as it is stronger and requires less investment than an articulated telehandler. For heavy duty work it is best to invest in a heavy duty machine, and for small jobs a mini loader is often the best loader for the job. If you are comparing mini loaders and mini telescopic's, (i.e. telehandlers under 4 tonne in operating weight) pay careful attention to the tipping height of the telescopic, as the SWL decreases dramatically when the telescopic boom is extended and can easily place the operator in a dangerous position. Generally the less a telehandlers weighs, the easier it is to get in this unsafe position.

This article focuses on comparing true rigid chassis telehandlers to equivalent articulated telehandlers - usually those with an operating weight from 5 tonnes. Some of these advantages of an articulated telehandler are outlined below.

When looking at buying an articulated loader or telehandler it is important to buy a loader with the seating position at the rear of the loader. One of the biggest advantages of articulated vehicles is the great visibility all around the cabin. An articulated telehandler or loader has a mast mounted on the front chassis and the driver sits on the rear. This set up will give the greatest driving efficiency, when reversing, particularly in tight areas. The driver simply reverses the same as a car. However with a few brands on the market, the operator sits on the front chassis. If the operator has to sit on the front of the loader, every time they reverse it is the same as reversing a car and trailer with a very short drawbar. The trailer swings in the opposite direction to the steering wheel and therefore more thought must go into it.

Articulated telehandlers have a great all round view as the mast is mounted in front of the driver and the operator can see both sides of the load. This allows the operator to work in confined spaces, if necessary, as they are confident of not accidently hitting personnel or vehicles in the area. The view out the rear of the loader is also superb as there are no connection points from the mast to the loader.

In a rigid chassis telehandler, the mast is mounted at the back, usually on the right hand side (RHS) of the telehandler. The operator sits on one side of the telehandler and the mast is mounted on the other side. The operator sits very low and has very poor vision of one side of the load, as the mast blocks vision. When stacking, it can be very difficult to make sure the RHS side of the load is stacked in tight. The vision out the RHS is sometimes completely obscured due to the side mounted mast. If the mast is raised anywhere near the operators head height, they cannot see anything to their direct right, it becomes a total blind spot and very unsafe. The mast is also mounted at the back RHS and this post is constructed extremely strongly as it bears the total weight of the mast and load. The post assembly obscures the vision out the back RHS and creates another blind spot. These blind spots force the operator to work very, very carefully, often with someone to monitor personnel and equipment in the vicinity and this significantly slows productivity. The operator must be extremely cautious the whole time. This is a big reason why articulated telehandlers and loaders are gaining even more rapid popularity - for their superior view and safety which in turn maximizes productivity.

Some objections exist due to the SWL differences between articulated telehandlers and rigid chassis telehandlers and it would be good to clear up a few points. Rigid chassis telehandlers generally have a higher SWL compared to an articulated telehandler. This is the due to the fact the counterweight in an articulated loader, when fully articulated, comes closer to the front end, so SWL decreases. In a rigid telehandler, the counterweight stays at the same distance, no matter the steering position. The chassis length is longer in an articulated telehandler compared to a rigid chassis telehandler to offset this disadvantage and allows the telehandler to pick up more weight if driven correctly, ie., the operator should always load and unload their bucket with the telehandler straight not articulated. This extra chassis length is a huge advantage in rough terrain work, particularly when coupled with an oscillating rear axle and allows the telehandler to perform on rougher ground and maintain stability where a short wheel based machine can't. The mast height is also restricted in articulated telehandlers by manufacturers to ensure stability.

When comparing the lifting capacity of an articulated telehandler with a rigid telehandler, one must compare the tool frame at the same position out the front of the machine. Articulated telehandlers have a front mounted mast, and to accommodate the tool frame and telescopic sections, the bucket or pallet forks START at 1.2m from the wheels, giving you an effective working distance, to unload trucks for example. Rigid telehandlers on the other hand, have rear mounted masts so the telescopic sections are contained within the length of the chassis and the tool frame starts at the wheels. This retracted position is often not of much use and the tool frame must be extended before a bucket can be loaded or a pallet picked up. For this reason to compare the rigid chassis telehandler lift capacity, one should measure this at the same distance out from the front wheels, identical to the position where the articulated telehandler tool frame starts, as the carrying capacity will be less than the fully retracted position.

For bucket loading work it is usually better to purchase an articulated loader if the mast height is suitable for the application. An articulated loader will give a much faster loading speed than a telescopic as the telescopic cylinder doesn't have to be extended to unload to get above the trucks dump height. The cylinder must then be retracted to load the bucket again. By not having to extend the telescopic cylinder, it saves time and wear on cylinders and bushes, and there is potential to damage the extended cylinder, if the operator forgets to retract the cylinder when loading.

Articulated telehandlers also have a number of other amazing benefits due to their articulated steering. The turning circle of an articulated loader can be incredibly small, due to the front chassis operating somewhat independently to the rear chassis and as it is more like driving two small machines it gives unsurpassed access into confined areas.

One advantage of articulated steering is the ability to use rigid axles that need very little maintenance. Rigid bodied telehandlers however must use CF joints to steer. As the loader bucket is filled, the telehandler's centre of gravity shifts the machines entire weight onto the front wheels, axles and CV joints which end up taking constant punishment as they must steer under this load. However, articulated telehandlers have rigid axles so there are no CV joints to get damaged when the centre of gravity shifts forwards when loading - the steering is controlled by articulating the whole front chassis.

Articulated steering also allows the operator to perfectly position a load just by turning the steering wheel, it really functions like an inbuilt side shift. Rigid bodied telehandlers however must move the whole machine to change the position of the load and can waste a lot of time during loading exercise. Crab steer can help somewhat, but the telehandler must still be completely moved to change the loading position at the mast face.

I hope this article has been of benefit showing the operational differences between an articulated telehandler and a rigid chassis telehandler. Articulated telehandlers are rapidly growing popularity worldwide and soon may become as common as the rigid chassis telehandlers due to their superior visibility and high productivity.

How to spot planets without a telescope?

Hey, I like in East England and I wanted to know how to spot planets like Jupiter, Venus and other planets without a telescope. I'm recently getting into astrology so writing down the places you found you information and you find useful would be awesome too :)

Jupiter and Venus are pretty easy. Right now, Jupiter is the su[per bright "star" that you can see almost all night long, in the southeast at sunset and works its way westward throughout the night.

Venus is even brighter, and is a late night (early morning) riser, showing up a couple hours before the sunrise, in the east.

Saturn and (I think Mercury?) are in the west right at sunset, but set really fast, you might want to wait a while to try to see those to.

Mars rises around midnight.

Start with Jupiter and Venus, those two will be unmistakably bright. The others, if you are not familiar with your constellations, will not be easy to identify without a star chart. (I use the one on heavens-above.com)

A Brief Review On Binoculars

As we all know binoculars are one of the most amazing things invented by man and there are many things to keep in mind when you think of buying a pair of binoculars.

If you observe carefully there are numbers written after the binoculars name, those numbers are very important. The number that you see in the first is the amount of magnification the binocular has. The second number that you see is the size of the optical lens. For example if you see a binocular with the numbers 8X40 it means the binocular has a magnification of eight times and a lens size of 40mm. Although you can see objects that are far away, binocular that have the magnification greater than ten starts to loose its image quality.

Binoculars that have lens with dark coating tend to resist the test of time better then the binoculars that are un-coated lenses.

The only advantage of buying a pair of binoculars from an internet dealer is that they are comparatively cheaper than any other retail store near you. But purchasing one from a retail store can give you the opportunity to test your compatibility with the binoculars.

I suggest you to spend a little extra money on water proof binoculars that will exist for a long time.

There are two kinds of binoculars collectors, those who collect the plain and massive field glasses and the second group of people are those who collect binoculars attracted to its compact and glittery opera glasses. The biggest opportunity for these collectors is in EBay as it provides a wide range of different kinds of binoculars.

Each day, there are gadgets and gizmo's added to the list of binoculars.

The best way to extend the life of your binocular when you are not using it is by storing it in a safe place out of the reach of children family and pets.

If you want a long lasting binoculars then go for the ones that are manufactured by Zeiss company.

When your binoculars are not in their box, do not forget to hang them securely around your neck as doing this will prevent you from accidentally dropping it. But in case if you drop your binoculars in saltwater, do not forget to immediately clean them with fresh water. After all the cleaning is done place the binocular in a plastic bag and then seal it, straight away take the binoculars to a binocular repair shop as saltwater can be extremely harmful to binoculars. Carefully cleaning your binoculars will extend their life expectancy.

Most of the Sony's mini DV Handy cam camcorders are made with Zeiss lenses.

Do not keep your binoculars on the car seat while traveling instead keep them in your glove compartment as this will protect them from getting sat on and crashing against the dashboard.

While buying a pair of antique binoculars make sure that the lens are clear as the lens and the leather coverings are difficult and costly to fix or replace.

There are many kinds of binoculars available for everyone; sportsmen, bird watchers, and even marine enthusiast.

spotting scopes?

Looking for a spotting scope ( even binoculars ) f/ target shooting.
Would be using for indoor 50' .22 cal rifle & pistol as well as outdoor for longer ranges .. 25yd to 100 yd larger calibers.
Mainly interested in what power to look for .
Physical size, zoom, brand not important.
Just do not want to buy more than I need.
Thanks
Thanks all.
Leaning away from binoculars .
Getting one eyeball on a scope is easier for me.
For occaisonal use would something
50 or 60 X be OK ?

If you buying a quality scope (Kowa, Zeiss, etc...) you can get a 20x fixed. If you are buying a mid to low end scope you will want a 20-60x zoom. Other than the fact that the larger the objective lens is, the more light it lets in and the brighter the target; size does not matter near as much as quality.
