Has anybody seen a star through a telescope?

What does it look like? I've never seen what one looks like. Plus, there's a star...well...I think it's a star anyway. It sparkles red, blue, and white and it's very big, to the left of the big dipper. Is that a planet or a star? Answer both questions please. Thanks.

Yes and it looks like a big fire ball with flames coming out of the sides, and the other thing is a nebula

The first telescope for me?

I want a 6" telescope that can see nebulas and star clusters, i was wondering if somebody could help me find one for me, i've looked at some but am not positive if it'll be good.

This is the one i was thinking of,

thank you

I would like to suggest that you join a local astronomy club or astronomical society BEFORE you spend your money on a scope. There are many different kinds of scopes and what is perfect for one person is not perfect for another. Everyone has their own set of eyeballs and no two are the same. If you join a club, you can attend a few of their star parties and try out members scopes to see what works best for YOU, before you buy a scope. The members can also help you when you get your scope and show you how to get the most out of your new scope as well as to help teach you where the treasures in the sky are located. Most clubs have loaner scopes and extensive libraries that you can gather more information from too. Most clubs will have monthly membership meetings with informative presentations given by members and by guest speakers. You can really learn a lot from these clubs and an added plus is all the great new friends you make there too. Go to this site to find a club in your area. http://www.astroleague.org/societies/list
This only has clubs that belong to the National Astronomy League, so there are many more which do not appear on this list. Continue searching google if you don't see one in your area here.

There are several different kinds of telescopes and all of them have some excellent features. Refractors and Reflectors, plus Schmidt-Cassegrain, APO refractors, Mac-Cass, and many more. There are also several mounts to chose from and the mounts are just as important, if not even more important, than the scope is. All of the different scopes and mounts have some features that some people like and do not like. No two eyeballs are the same and the perfect scope for one person might be completely wrong for another person.

There is no one scope that is "better" than another ---except for the junk scopes out there which are all just a waste of money. Never, ever buy from Walmart, Costco, Target, or any other discount store like that. Junk scopes are flooded into the market from those stores. You will be buying nothing but bad optics and plastic.

If you are new at this, then stay away from anything used from any site. If you don't know what you are buying and who you are buying from you will most likely be getting someone else's headache---with no warranty either. Some great deals on used equipment are out there, by people who know how to use and take care of scopes, but if you don't know what you are doing, you might be spending a lot of money on worthless junk. One improper cleaning can destroy a scope. Buyer Beware.

I recommend: http://oriontelescopes.com/

Orion is the very best for value and for customer service too. I have 3 of their scopes and I will only buy from them from now on. My first scope was a manual controlled scope and I am very glad that it was because it forced me to learn where things are in the night skies. Go-To type scopes can be frustrating to use. If you do not have them aligned exactly perfect, they do not find the targets. If you are a beginner, you will be frustrated unless you spring for a GPS Go-To. An object locator is just that---it will locate objects for you (must be aligned first) but an object locator is not a tracking motor. It will not keep the scope on the target.

The Orion site has some excellent diagrams and explanations of all types of scopes and mounts.

Things to consider are size--can the user lift and transport the scope to the viewing site easily? Does it fit in your car? If not, then it will gather dust in a closet. I recommend a carrying case too so it is protected in storage and transport. Can the viewer reach all the knobs and buttons? I have a long tube large manual refractor and it is very difficult for me to reach the knobs when I am pointed to Zenith. I am not a tall person.

Take your time in making your decision.

Some people will suggest that you purchase binoculars. Not a bad idea but don't buy anything less than 10x50 and you must have a tripod too or you will not be happy with your astronomical views because they will be too shaky from your movements. Even your pulse will make them shake. Personally, I prefer a scope to binos because if binoculars are not aligned properly at the factory, then you get double images and distortions that can't be fixed. Most of the cheaper binoculars are not properly aligned. That is not as important for terrestial viewing, but it is a killer for astronomical viewing. Binos can also be bumped out of alignment and become useless for astronomy.

When you buy, go Orion and you wont be disappointed. Don't try to learn everything all at once or you will be overwhelmed and discouraged. Patience is the key to Astronomy.

You will need a good star chart program too.

http://www.stellarium.org/

This is great freeware that you can download. Tell it where you are and it will tell you what you see. Ask it where something is and it will show you.

I wish you all the best! Enjoy!

Edit: Meade used to be a great scope maker but they have had a lot of problems the past few years and they are now known to be VERY POOR with customer service after a sale. If you don't get a perfect scope to begin with, they won't help you fix problems.

Why can I only see Mars as a tiny dot with my telescope?

I just bought a telescope Celestron Astromaster 114 EQ, and using the 10mm lens, all I see of Mars is a tiny bright dot, using Barlow x2, it's quite fuzzy. Used different filters, different lens, but the result is the same.

I understand that it is a small planet and that it's far, but still

Except when it is very close to the Earth (which won't happen again until about a decade from now) Mars is never much more than a bright dot in most amateur telescopes. Even when close, Mars is disappointing except in large, high quality telescopes under excellent seeing conditions. Jupiter and Saturn are far more rewarding planetary targets.

New telescope and mount selection?

I had a 5inch GOTO telescope for about two years. I am interested in buying a telescope GOTO larger. I am an amateur astrophotographer, and I want to go to a larger instrument with a minimum of 8 inches, probably 10 to 12 inches. Does anyone out there have a Vixen 200 Vixen or 260 or similar size Meade? I am also looking for installation tips. My budget is $ 5000 maximum. I would like a 2-inch or larger eye, but for now still be able to use 1.25 eyepieces. Photo interest has been only lunar / planetary, but I want a telescope large enough to make room deep targets with a different budget for a dedicated astro camera instead of settling for a conventional digital camera. What some of you long time time observers to suggest?

Focus on the mountain first. For astrophotography, you really need a German equatorial mount. The best bang for the dollar seems to be the Synta EQ-6, sold in the U.S. as the Orion Atlas. If you are interested in deep sky images, consider an apochromatic refractor instead of a Schmidt-Cassegrain, due to its rapid and more extensive list of fields of view coordination. Orion EON series of excellent and now have focused most flatteners have available field.

New Galaxy Discovered!

Before I get all you amateur astronomers reaching for your telescopes and directing them towards the heavens I must point out that I'm not referring to the interstellar kind of Galaxy but the exciting new Ford Galaxy. I apologise for any confusion I may have caused but to me the discovery of a vehicle that finally suits our family's needs is the cause for much celebration.

You see for years now we have shoehorned ourselves into all manner of estate cars and small MPV's often resulting in miserable journeys that involve everybody being cramped and arguing with each other. Family holidays should normally be a pleasurable experience for all but all too often ours seem to descend into petty bickering with each other and the dog usually joins in for good measure.

We finally arrive at our destination tired and hoarse from all the shouting and with the windows steamed up because my kids insist on the interior temperature to be more akin to a portable sauna. Sometimes I long for one of those Perspex screens that taxis have that I could just slide across to drown out the endless chorus of "I'm bored" or "Are we there yet?."

Then there's all the stuff you have to take with you, I vaguely remember in my younger single days I could go away for a week with nothing more than a spare pair of underpants and a toothbrush and could always jettison the pants if required. Nowadays it seems we have to transport every conceivable modern day luxury with us and frankly might as well just hook the house up to the back of the car and drag it with us down the motorway.

There have been a few times recently when I have lost the plot and said to my kids that I'm going to go to the builder's merchant and buy a few bags of sand and empty them in the living room so we can just pretend we are on the beach.

I am pleased to report that this is all behind us now as we are the proud owners of a new Ford Galaxy. I had driven a Galaxy a few years ago when my friend organised a stag party and in his wisdom turned up in a 2.3 petrol engine model much to our consternation as we had to drive it all the way to Amsterdam. Suffice to say that after satisfying the copious thirst for fuel this thing had there was very little left in the kitty for our drinking activities and certainly nothing left to fund a night in the arms of one of those nice ladies in the window which we had planned for him.

Despite that I do recall the Ghia model which we had was luxuriously appointed with leather and wood although it did remind me somewhat of a gentleman's drawing room. I decided to opt for the Zetec model which is well equipped but has a more high-tech feel to the interior.

There was just a question of where to make my purchase. These days there is a bewildering array of different places to visit from the traditional franchised dealers to car supermarkets and such like. After spending what felt like a lifetime on the internet I finally opted for Ford Deals Direct. They purchase from Ford and by cutting out the middleman are able to offer big discounts on new Ford cars. We saved a few thousand on the new list price which is great as the money we saved will go towards next years' holiday to Wales. I can hardly wait as we now have dual zone air conditioning and a DVD system not to mention acres of space and room for seven. I might even have room for two pairs of pants!

And has the Mars Eye Electronic Locator which uses the red dot to find things.

I paid 89.99 plus tax. Worth it or can I find something better for my money? I'm willing to spend up to $150 and this said it was normally $149 and was on sale.

Thanks so much!

That would be an OK telescope for the price. But it wil be dissapointing. It is an OK beginers scope but for 50 or 60 more you could get a better Reflector (note: not a refractor). What you have would be OK for viewing the planets and the Moon. To really get your moneys worth I would suggest getting better eye pieces. But these would cost quite a bit ($30-$130 or more) so I would just get another telescope.

If you want to view stars and nebulae and galaxies I would go for a Reflector. The bigger the aperature (the diameter) the better, and more expensive. I would say that what you got is OK but not great.

If your boyfriend finds he likes astronomy and wants something a bit better but not break the bank then I would suggest geting a Meade ETX-125 ($500 on Ebay) or ETX-90. They have an auto guide (they follow the stars) and a computer that lets you select what you want to see from a menu and it just goes there (some set up required). And a bunch of other stuff.

If he wants the good stuff I would suggest the Meade LX90GPS or the LX200R. These are big and expensive but very nice!

I think what you got was OK for your boyfriend to try and find out if he likes it. But a relector would have been better and not much more expensive. Look on ebay for a reflector. You should beable to find a basic one for 150-200.

I would suggest that if your boyfriend wants bigger telescope to do research on what would be best.

Figuring out the type of eye piece to use with my telescope?

What is an easy way to know which eye piece to use with my telescope? I have a 1300 x 100 Maksutov-Cassegrain. I want to see deep space? Can I with this scope?

Here's the link to mine:

http://bushnell.com/general/telescopes_northstar_78-8840.cfm

Do you know of a decently priced telescope that will let me see deep space? I would like to purchase another. I've heard the Dobsonian is best, is this correct? (I wish I could afford a Richter.)

For looking at deep sky objects, you generally want a low magnification, so I'd use the 25mm (or is it 20mm, the web page says both) primarily. As another answer says, the 4mm eyepiece is way too short for your size of telescope. I'd maybe buy a 32mm eyepiece (not a 40mm) for lower power views, and an 8 or 9mm for higher power (Moon and planets).

Yes, an 8" or 10" Dobsonian will be much better for deep sky objects: much more light gathering, and a wider field of view. I'd recommend one of the ones in the Source below.

What is the difference between "Schmidt-Cassegrain" and "Maksutov-Cassegrain" telescopes?

Generally speaking, the shape of the corrector plates and secondary mirrors, though both do have convex secondary mirrors but the exact shape differs.

Schmidt Cassegrains have thin, wavey shaped corrector plates and the appropriate shaped secondary mirror.

Maksutov Cassegrains have thick meniscus shaped corrector plates and the appropriate secondary mirror.

As others pointed out, Schmidt Cassegrains can be easily made in larger apertures, while Maksutov Cassegrains can't because the corrector plate is actually more akin to a lens and lenses get heavy quickly and are more difficult and expensive to produce.

Beyond that, the differences between the two get complex and typically deal with how much of a particular type of aberration which one suffers from. These aberrations are typically spherical aberrations, astigmatisms, and non-coma off axis distortions.

It is said that a Maksutov Cassegrain will outperform a Schmidt Cassegrain of the same size, but you don't see many Maksutov Cassegrains over 5" or many Schmidt Cassegrains under 6" so it's a bit of a nil point.

Maksutov Cassegrain

Upgrading to a new telescope.?

I currently have a Orion 102mm maksutov cassegrain telescope I have used it to the best of its ability and I am starting to get bored with it because I can not see very much with it. I was thinking about getting the Orion SkyQuest XT10 Computerized IntelliScope. Would this be a good idea? The only con is that I will lose 100mm of focal length but that is expected. Could I use a 10mm eyepiece and a 2x barlow to make up for the missing focal length? Why is this telescope so cheap for its size? Or is it that other telescopes are expensive for their size.

Are there any major differences with this telescope and my other telescope. It is obvious that they are very different but what I mean is, will I have to do certain things to it like collimate it every time I use it and stuff like that or can I just set it outside to acclimate and then use it?

It sounds like light pollution is a big problem for you, like most amateur astronomers. A good 4-inch from a dark site will show a lot more objects than many people would think possible. A 10-inch Dobsonian on the other hand from a dark site will show you 13th magnitude galaxies, and if your vision is excellent it will show 14th magnitude objects provided the skies are very clear and your eyes are fully dark adapted. This is far beyond the reach of a 4-inch. The slightly shorter focal length is of no consequence, because magnification is controlled by the focal lengths of both the main optics and the eyepiece in use. You can reach 400X or even higher with a 10-inch simply by using a high power eyepiece, or a high power eyepiece and a Barlow lens. The reason why Dobsonians cost less for their aperture than other telescopes is the mounting and the fact optically they're Newtonians. It's made of plywood or in the case of the Orion Intelliscope, fiberboard and it's a simple alt-azimuth mounting, not an equatorial. Because it's not made of metal, which has to be machined or cast to fine tolerances, the mounting is inexpensive and most of the money is in the optics. There are only two surfaces that have to be made precisely in a Newtonian, whereas a Maksutov-Cassegrain has at least four surfaces that all have to be made precisely for the telescope to give sharp views. The glass the corrector is made from has to be not only free of stresses, it must be uniform throughout. That fact and the larger number of surfaces to be ground and polished are why Maks are far more expensive than a Newtonian or Dobsonian of the same aperture. In contrast., mirrors can be made of metal, quartz, ceramic, and numerous kinds of glasses as long as they're dimensionally stable enough and can be polished well enough to make a mirror. You do need to keep the telescope sealed up with dust caps when not in use to keep the optics clean unlike your Mak. As for collimation, Newtonians and Dobs do require it to preform at their best, and it's particularly critical when the focal ratio is 5 or less. This is not difficult to do when you use the appropriate collimation tools, which are a sight tube and a Cheshire eyepiece. Forget the laser collimators, because unless they're collimated themselves they're useless. A good one will cost 200 dollars, whereas I bought a complete set of collimation tools for 75 bucks. Best of all, it never needs batteries. A good Dob will never need a major collimation every time you set it up, but it might need a minor tweak to the primary mirror. Unless the tube is bumped or you remove the secondary mirror for cleaning, it should rarely if ever require adjustment. If you do buy a 10-inch Dob, don't sell your Mak. It is an ideal portable second telescope you can take almost anywhere. Even so, you should take the 4-inch to a dark site because as you will see in some of the sketches in my web page, galaxies and nebulae are well in reach of a small telescope.
