i have a 6 inch telescope and live in CA near san francisco, what are some good things i can see with it?
Just checking to see what any one else knows. Also its supposed to be 625x, i think i may be using the wrong eye peices?
Ignore the 625X. What that means is that if you put the smallest available eyepiece in, and double the power with a barlow lens, you'll have 625 magnification. That's like putting a Ferrari engine in a Volkswagen Beetle and calling it a sports car.
That's because a scope is only as good as its optics. As the first answerer said, you can find the highest magnification that's PRACTICAL for a scope that size, with excellent optics, and in the best possible skies. You'll be happy if you push it to 150X, which is as much as you need for general viewing. For deep-sky objects, you want low power anyway, with the larger eyepieces.
Forget magnification. What you want is light-gathering ability, and 6 inches is a respectable size, though I have my doubts about the quality if they advertise it as "625X" or anything like that. What brand is it?
Get a star-hopping guide, like "Nightwatch" (Terence Dickinson) or "Turn Left At Orion" (Consalmagno et al.). Take your time and get to know things slowly.
For the record, a scope like that is good for looking at deep-sky objects. (I assume it's a reflector.) Look now for the Orion Nebula, Pleiades, Hyades . . . come to think of it, get the book!
