Consumer Reports - Camcorders
granulated hose, old home movies nervous are gone - replaced by home movies shot in cold digital or analog video. You can edit and embellish images with music using your computer, then played in the recorder, you can even send e-mail.
Digital camcorders, now the dominant type, generally offer very good image quality, capable of very good sound, compact and easy to use. Realization copies of a digital recording will not result in a loss of picture or sound quality. You can even take pictures with some rudimentary video cameras digital.
analog video cameras, now a small part of the market, usually have good image and sound quality and are less expensive. Some units Analog is so compact and easy to handle as digital models, while others are a little bigger and bulkier.
What's Available
Sony dominates the camcorder market, with multiple models in a variety of formats. Other top brands include Canon, JVC, Panasonic and Samsung.
Most digital models come in MiniDV format. Based formats like DVD-RAM and DVD-R have also appeared. Some digital models weigh only one pound.
MiniDV. Do not let its small size fool you. Although some models can be stored in a large pocket, MiniDV camcorders can record high quality images. They use a single tape cartridge, and the typical recording time is 60 minutes at standard play (SP) speed. Expect to pay $ 6.50 for a tape 60 minutes. You have to use your camcorder for playback - converts an analog recording, so it can be played directly on a TV or VCR. If your TV or VCR has an S-video input, use it to obtain a high quality image.
Price Range: $ 350 to over 2,000 dollars.
Digital 8. Also known as D8, this format gives digital quality on Hi8 or 8mm tapes, which cost $ 6.50 and $ 3.50 respectively. The Digital 8 format records with a faster tape speed, so a "120 minutes" cassette lasts only 60 minutes at SP. Most models can also play your old analog Hi8 or 8mm tapes.
Price Range: $ 350 to $ 800.
Based on disk. Capitalizing on growth explosive and the capabilities of DVD movie discs, these formats offer benefits tape can not provide: long-term durability, compact half random access the scenes on a DVD. The 3 1/4-inch discs record standard MPEG-2, the same format used in commercial DVD videos. The amount of recording time varies depending on the level of quality you select: 20 minutes per side in the most high-quality DVD-RAM up to about 60 minutes on each side in the position low. DVD-RAM discs are not compatible with DVD players, but the discs can be reused. DVD-R is supposed to be compatible with most DVD players and drives computer DVD, but the discs are write-once. We pay about $ 25 in local store a DVD-RW.
Price Range: $ 700 to $ 1,000.
Most analog camcorders now use the Hi8 format, VHS-C and Super VHS-C are disappearing from the market. Blank tapes range in price from $ 3.50 to $ 6.50. Analog camcorders usually weigh around 2 pounds. The image quality is generally good, though a notch below that of digital.
Rank Price: $ 225 to $ 500.
IMPORTANT FEATURES
A removable liquid crystal display (LCD) is becoming a spectator normal in all camcorders, but cheaper. It is helpful to review images you've shot and easier to use than the eyepiece viewfinder shoot attitudes. Some LCD viewers are hard to use sunlight, a drawback in models that have only one eye and no viewer.
Screens vary from 2 1 / 2 to 4 inches diagonally, with a larger screen offered as a step-up feature on higher-priced models. From an LCD screen rechargeable batteries faster than an eyepiece viewfinder does, you do not have recording time when the LCD is in use.
An image stabilizer automatically reduces most of the earthquakes that occur after the conclusion of the camcorder while recording a scene. Most stabilizers are electronic, some are optical. Both types can be effective but mounting the camcorder on a tripod is the surest way to obtain stable images. If you are using a tripod, you can try holding the camcorder with both hands with elbows against your chest.
full automatic switch essentially lets you point and shoot. The camcorder automatically adjusts the color balance, shutter speed, focus, and aperture (also called iris "or" f-stop "With video cameras).
Autofocus adjusts for maximum sharpness; replace the manual approach may be needed for problem situations such as low light. (With some camcorders, you may have to tap buttons repeatedly to get the focus to perfection.) In many models, also can control exposure, shutter speed and white balance.
The zoom is typically a finger control - press one way to approach the image, another way to expand the view. The speed at which the capture of the changes will depend on how hard you press the switch. Typical optical zoom ratios range from 10:1 to 26:1. The zoom relies on optical lenses, like a film camera (hence the term "Optical Zoom"). Many cameras offer a digital zoom to extend the range of 400:1 or more, but with a lower image quality.
For tape-based formats, analog or digital, every camcorder tape shows speeds in the same way a VCR does. All models, for example, includes an SP (standard play) speed. Digitals due to the slow, LP (Long play) speed that adds a 50 percent recording time. 8mm and Hi8 Some models have a speed twice the LP recording time. All VHS-C and S-VHS-C camcorders have an even slower EP (extended play) speed that triples the recording time. With analog camcorders, slower speeds slower in lower quality image. speed reduction does not usually reduce image quality in digital video cameras. But the use of low speed means sacrificing some of little use editing features and can restrict playback on other camcorders.
Disc formats based on a variety of ways that trade off recording time on image quality.
Quick review lets you see the last seconds of a scene without having to press lots of buttons. For situations special lighting, with auto exposure presets, can be useful. A snow and sand "setting, for example, adjusts the speed of shutter or aperture to accommodate high reflectivity.
A light provides some illumination for close-ups when the image otherwise be too dark. Backlight compensation increases the exposure slightly when the subject is lit from behind and clipped. A recording of infrared-sensitive mode (also known as night vision, zero lux, or MagicVu) allows shooting in very dim or dark with infrared emitters. You can use it for nighttime shots, although colors will not register accurately in this mode.
Audio / video inputs allow you to record material from another camcorder or VCR, useful to copy part of another video on his own. (A digital camcorder should have as an input jack, if you want to record analog to digital material.) Unlike a microphone incorporated, an external microphone that is plugged into a microphone does not capture the sounds of the video camera itself, which usually improves audio performance.
A video camera with digital capability lets you take snapshots, which can be downloaded to your computer. The photo quality is generally lower than a fixed camera.
The editing features that can help include a title generator, a time stamp and date and a time code, which is a frame of reference of exactly where you are on a tape - the hour, minute, second, and frame. A remote control helps when you are using your camcorder as a playback device or when you're using a tripod. Programmed recording (a self-timer) starts the camcorder recording at a preset time.
HOW TO CHOOSE
Choose your price range and format. The least expensive camcorders on the market are analog. Everything else are digital.
Once you've decided which part of the price spectrum to explore, you need to choose a specific recording format. This determines not just how much you spend aa tapes or discs, but also how much recording time you get. Tape-based formats tend to be higher image quality.
With analog, you can get 120 to 300 minutes of recording from a cassette Hi8, SVHS-C with or VHS-C formats, you can get only 30 to 120 minutes.
With digital formats that use MiniDV, Digital 8, or MicroMV, tapes, you can get at least 60 minutes of recording on a standard cassette. D8 and MiniDV tapes are less expensive and easier to find.
Panasonic DVD Digital and Hitachi can accommodate DVD-RAM discs that can be reused, but are not compatible with all DVD players. All brands also use DVD-R discs, single-use discs that work in most DVD players. The standard yield configuration 60 minutes of recording, the "fine" setting, 30 minutes.
If you are replacing a more camcorder, think about what going to do with the tapes you've accumulated. If you do not stay in the same format that has been using, you may want to transfer old recordings to a readily visible as a DVD.
If you're buying your first camera, focus on finding the best for your budget, regardless of format.
Check the size, weight, and controls. At the store, try different cameras to make sure it fits your hands and are comfortable to wear. Some models can feel disconcertingly small. (You will use a tripod if you want rock-steady video, no matter what video camera you choose.) Most camcorders are designed for frequently used controls - the zoom switch in and out, and the record button - fall easily to hand. Make sure the controls are convenient and can change the tape or DVD and remove the battery.
Check removable LCD viewfinder. Most measure 2.5 inches diagonally, but some are more large, adding about $ 100 price. If the viewer looks small and difficult to use or not too bright, consider trading up similar model or a different brand to get a better screen.
Think about lighting. A camcorder is not always used outdoors or in a room well lit. You can record video in low light, but do not expect miracles. In our tests, using video cameras default 'mode, most had only fair or poor-quality images of low light. Many camcorders have settings that can improve performance, but can be a challenge to use.

Film SLR astrophotography image is projected from the optical drive directly to the film?
Or is it a lens mounted on the SLR and piggy-backed on the eye? And information about choosing the right film SLR would be truly grateful thanks
Very Often the camera is mounted on the telescope directly through the scope as a telephoto lens. You can also afocal (lens the camera eye) and ocular projection (using the eyepiece to project an enlarged image in the film). Any basic book on astrophotography describe specific details. Desirable characteristics of the camera are mechanically operated shutter (so you do not run the battery down while maintaining la), mirror lock the shutter open, and interchangeable focusing screens. The Olympus OM1 35 mm and the Pentax 6x7 medium format have been very popular.
