Palm webos latches for recovery
At the turn of the century, Palm Inc. that dominated in the U.S. PDA / Smartphone reaching markets a maximum of $ 95 per share on NASDAQ. A good decade later, in 2010, its share price restraints between $ 4 and $ 7 and peaks only when there are rumors that a company is interested in taking over. In early April, was 20% with the news of an impending purchase of Lenovo of China earlier wither and HTC. Rumor earlier that China's ZTE Corp and Huawei were equally interested. However, all these were sprinkled with "speculation."
A new chief representing a change or sell
It took the former Apple executive in charge in part to the success of the iPod to give a new life into the ailing company. First take place as head of its products division Development and now CEO, Jonathan Rubinstein seems to be cut for the work to resuscitate Palm. He had put some radical product strategies in 2009 to keep it afloat. Alas, these strategies were simply not enough.
- features exclusive smartphone are de rigueur in markets dominated by HTC and Blackberry. The Palm Pixi Pre and products can be said to their best products in years. The company has to get out more of these products to saturate the market like HTC and Blackberry Nokia not to mention, he's doing. Unfortunately, while the Pre Palm could have saved the company which came at the wrong time with the features and prices that do not really agree with what their rivals had. as capable as is, without a low battery power even a simple FM radio, no microSD card slot, and video recording, Palm Pre was necessary to meet their rivals, while setting itself market price. To make matters worse, the company comes out with the updated version of Palm Pixi Plus with only an addition to the Pixi WiFi. What was Palm thinking?
- N exclusive distribution of any large company. That is good enough. After a poor distribution of their mobile Palm Pre and Pixi its Sprint-Nextel with only 400,000 units sold during a period had forecast 700,000 units sold, how is AT & T and other distributors to sell its Plus and Pre Plus Pixi smartphones. None of their products have the same appeal as the iPhone that can survive with exclusive distribution agreement.
- The focus on appropriate platform is critical to get the right product, maintaining the cost advantages. The abandonment of your Windows Mobile efforts was a prudent thing to save on costs production is now free of licensing Windows. It has also left the PalmOS more properly, because it really does not make sense for a player nitch market small to have its own computer operating system development. However, this team continued to maintain that supports new WebOS platform he was able to realize 20% - 25% savings over using the Android open source is fast emerging as the darling of the smart people.
Palm had the best strategies for a turnaround in 2009, but it was a clear case of too little too late. Triumphant With the iPhone in mobile markets Smart HTC and Blackberry, while the flex muscle to fend off iPhone, Palm simply not an opportunity. His only hope now is to find a partner or buyer to continue the name.
